TNAU Ph.D Forestry: Fees 2026, Course Duration, Dates, Eligibility

Ans. The Ph.D. in Forestry is offered exclusively at the Forest College and Research Institute (FC&RI), Mettupalayam, which is a constituent college of TNAU located about 40 km from the main Coimbatore campus. FC&RI is situated in 200 hectares of reserved forest at the foothills of the Nilgiris, providing a unique research environment. Students enrolled in this programme will be based at Mettupalayam, not at the main TNAU campus in Coimbatore.

Ans. Yes, Tamil Nadu domicile candidates can apply directly through the TNAU PG School online portal (admissionsatpgschool.tnau.ac.in) without appearing in the ICAR AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D.) examination. Admission for Tamil Nadu students is based on merit in the qualifying Master's degree. However, qualifying in the ICAR exam is mandatory for candidates from other states who wish to apply under the All India Quota seats. Note that only Tamil Nadu domicile candidates who have studied in Regular, Full-Time, Formal Education mode are eligible for the direct state quota route.

ICAR JRF fellows receive ₹31,000 per month for the first two years of their Ph.D., which is upgraded to ₹35,000 per month (SRF) from the third year onwards, subject to satisfactory research progress. In addition, House Rent Allowance (HRA) of ₹5,580 per month and a contingency grant of ₹20,000 per year are also provided. The fellowship is disbursed directly to the student's bank account and is tenable for a maximum of five years or until completion of the Ph.D., whichever is earlier. Ans. The Ph.D. in Forestry follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with a total credit load of 100 credits. Of these, 75 credits are exclusively reserved for thesis research, while the remaining 25 credits are for coursework in the first year. After completing coursework, each student is assigned an experienced faculty guide approved by the Dean of the School of Post-Graduate Studies (SPGS), who mentors the student through their chosen research topic. Students are also encouraged to undertake research internships at other institutes in India or abroad and to participate in scientific events such as symposia and conferences.

Ans. Yes, TNAU offers seats under the self-supporting programme category in addition to the regular seats. Students admitted under the self-supporting category are required to pay an additional fee of ₹25,000 per semester over and above the regular fee structure. The eligibility criteria and admission process remain the same for self-supporting seats; however, ICAR JRF/SRF fellowship is not applicable for self-supporting category students.
