Ques. How many seats are available for PhD Biotechnology at BHU and how competitive is it?
Ans. As per the 2026-27 bulletin, the School of Biotechnology at BHU offers only 4 seats in total - 1 under RET mode (NET-qualified) and 3 under RET-Exempted mode (JRF holders). This makes it one of the most competitive PhD programmes at BHU. For the single RET mode seat, 10 candidates per category are called for interview, making the competition extremely high. Candidates with DBT JRF, CSIR JRF, or UGC JRF have a significantly better chance through the RET-Exempted route.
Ques. Is DBT JRF (BET/GAT-B) accepted for PhD Biotechnology admission at BHU?
Ans. Yes. DBT JRF holders are explicitly eligible for the RET-Exempted (direct admission) category at BHU. The DBT BET (Biotechnology Eligibility Test), now conducted as GAT-B by RCB Faridabad, is one of the primary qualifying fellowships for PhD Biotechnology at BHU. All JRF holders from UGC, CSIR, DBT, and ICMR qualify for the RET-Exempted category.

Ques. Can MSc Biochemistry or Zoology students apply for PhD Biotechnology at BHU?
Ans. Yes, but only for allied discipline seats. The School of Biotechnology accepts candidates with MSc in Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Botany, Microbiology/Applied Microbiology, and Zoology for allied discipline seats. However, allied discipline seats are limited to a maximum of 20% of total vacancies in the main discipline. Given the very small total seat count (4 seats), allied discipline seats may be extremely limited or unavailable in a given year.
Ques. Does BHU School of Biotechnology have good research infrastructure and funding?
Ans. Yes. The School of Biotechnology at BHU has excellent research infrastructure. It is a recipient of DST-FIST and UGC-SAP (Phases I, II and III) support. The school houses a DBT-funded Centre for Bioinformatics (Sub-DIC) since 1989, with internet facilities, databases, and bioinformatics tools. The school participates in the Interdisciplinary School of Life Sciences (ISLS), a DBT-funded centre established in 2009.
