US Policymakers may soon start focusing on Post-study work offers in this country according to Mr. Allan Goodman, President of the Institute of International Education. This is mainly because of the strict competition in this area, as most major countries have come to understand the need for skilled workers to accelerate their economies.

Mr. Goodman is reportedly not worried about international student employment in the US, which according to him will surge as the country recovers from the Pandemic. However, countries may jostle with each other in order to become the top recruiting nation post work.
To this end, some countries have started offering several incentives, among them the UK, which reinstated its post-study work visa, and Australia, which has been reviewing its policies in a bid to catch up on international recruitment. Canada, meanwhile, has often been seen as a leader in the area with its post-graduation work permit program.

On the other hand, the US allows students on F-1 visas to opt for a work-related route for a year via the Optional Practical Training. In case of science-based disciplines, the time period for work can also be extended if students received job offers related to their disciplines. However, the situation is a bit complex for students with H-1B Visa as its requires employer sponsorship.
While commenting on this issue, Dr Goodman said nations that could in essence “staple a green card” to a degree “are going to have an edge in the war for talent”.

He continued that, it was “not out of the realm of possibility” that candidates in the 2024 presidential election “will say we need to consider schemes” similar to other countries’ because companies in the US, as in other developed economies, “need people from everywhere” as their populations' age.
Hence Dr. Goodman said that he feels that it is high time that members of prominent universities speak out on the benefit of globalization of higher education. He said that leaders in US need to remind common men that all of society reaps benefits when a country keeps its door open to the world.

He continually drew attention to the fact that there is a need for IIE (Institute of International Education) and US Universities to join hands and help refugees. This includes helping and recruiting refugees fleeing war in Ukraine as well as students out of political favors like Russia and Afghanistan.
“All through our history, we have taken students and encouraged the flow of students from everywhere,” he said. “I think it is in the interest of the whole world that academic doors stay open no matter what’s happening politically and what is taking place.”
The IIE is providing emergency funding to around 1700 Ukrainian students on US University campuses, as well as offering aid to 4700 Russian students who cant get home or get funds from home.
