University at Buffalo SUNY Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

UB SUNY assesses Indian applicants on a recognised 4-year bachelor’s degree, English proficiency, and a WES credential evaluation for graduate applications.

  • Academic (PG): 4-year bachelor’s with CGPA 7.0/10 or 70% (recommended); select engineering departments accept 3-year bachelor’s with bridge coursework
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 79 (minimum 17 in each section), IELTS 6.5, PTE 55, or Duolingo English Test 105
  • Credential verification: WES ICAP (course-by-course with GPA calculation) required for most graduate applications
  • Standardised tests: GRE is optional for most MS programmes; GMAT or GRE required for MBA with waivers available for strong profiles

Key insight: UB waives the IELTS or TOEFL requirement for Indian applicants whose bachelor’s was taught fully in English medium, subject to a letter from the university confirming medium of instruction.

University at Buffalo SUNY Acceptance Rate 2027

University at Buffalo SUNY’s overall undergraduate acceptance rate sits at 68% (estimated) for the most recent admission cycle. UB is a mid-selective public research university, and graduate acceptance rates vary significantly by department.

YearAcceptance RateTrend

202567% (estimated)Marginal increase

Indian applicants with strong academics (CGPA 7.5 and above) and matching test scores usually see higher admit odds than the overall figure. MS engineering and computer science are more competitive than the university-wide rate.

Reality check: UB’s headline rate does not apply to competitive MS programmes. MS Computer Science and Engineering and MS Engineering Data Science admit closer to 20% to 30% of applicants each Fall.

University at Buffalo SUNY Campus, Facilities and Student Life

UB SUNY operates three campuses in Buffalo, New York: North Campus (main academic hub in Amherst suburb), South Campus (health sciences), and Downtown Campus (Jacobs School of Medicine).

  • Location and transport: 8 miles between North and South campuses; a free UB Stampede shuttle runs every 15 minutes; Buffalo Niagara International Airport is 20 minutes from North Campus
  • Housing: 20% of international graduate students housed on-campus; most Indian students take shared apartments in Amherst near North Campus at USD 400 to 600 per bedroom (INR 33,000 to 50,000)
  • Notable facility: Center for Computational Research (CCR) is one of the largest academic supercomputing centres in New York state, used heavily by MS and PhD students
  • Indian community: 1,200+ Indian students on rolls; active Indian Students Association hosts Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events; 15+ Indian grocery stores and restaurants within 10 miles of campus

What Indian students say: Winter is long and harsh from October to April, but the tight Indian community and low cost of living make Buffalo one of the easier US cities to settle into. On-campus jobs at dining, libraries and CCR are widely available.

  • Indian alumni: UB has produced notable Indian alumni including senior engineering and product leaders across Silicon Valley and Wall Street firms
  • Career support: Career Design Center runs India-specific placement prep, resume workshops, and OPT filing sessions each semester

Insider note: Buffalo’s local job market is smaller than Boston or NYC. Most Indian graduates relocate to metros like NYC, Boston, San Francisco Bay Area, Austin or Seattle within 6 months of graduation for higher-paying roles.

University at Buffalo SUNY vs Peer Universities

The table below compares UB SUNY with peer US public research universities that Indian applicants shortlist for MS engineering and business analytics programmes.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Avg Annual PG Fee (USD)Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh)Differentiator
University at Buffalo SUNY#416USD 26,85022.5 lakhLow cost of living; strong CS and dentistry
Stony Brook University SUNY#372 (estimated)USD 27,000 (estimated)22.7 lakh (estimated)Stronger AI and quantitative finance research

Arizona State University#209 (estimated)USD 30,000 (estimated)25.2 lakh (estimated)Larger Indian cohort, warmer climate

UB stands out for its combination of AAU-membership research quality, one of the lowest tuition-plus-living cost stacks among US public research universities, and STEM MBA designation that few peers offer at this price band.

University at Buffalo SUNY suits Indian applicants who prioritise research quality and total cost efficiency, at a total investment of USD 55,000 to USD 90,000 (INR 46.2 to 75.6 lakh) offset by median starting salaries of USD 85,000 or higher for STEM masters. The 36-month OPT window under F-1 rules gives Indian graduates a longer runway to convert internships into H-1B sponsorship than most non-STEM programmes offer.

It is a weaker fit for applicants targeting Ivy-brand employer recognition or a warm-climate campus lifestyle. Applicants prioritising those factors may prefer Northeastern University for Boston-based industry access or Arizona State University for climate and Indian community scale.

Hourly pay ranges from USD 12 to USD 18 for most non-academic on-campus jobs.

Ques. Can Indian applicants get an IELTS waiver at UB?

Ans. UB SUNY waives the IELTS or TOEFL requirement for Indian applicants whose bachelor’s degree was taught fully in English medium, subject to a Medium of Instruction letter from the parent university confirming this. Applicants must upload the MOI letter on institution letterhead during application. Waivers are not automatic; graduate school reserves the right to require the test if the letter is insufficient.

Ques. Is there an application fee waiver for Indian students at University at Buffalo SUNY?

Ans. UB SUNY does not offer blanket application fee waivers for Indian applicants. The standard graduate application fee is USD 85 (INR 7,140). Fee waivers may be granted case-by-case for applicants participating in specific outreach programmes, McNair Scholars, or partner university MOUs. Contact the graduate school admissions office directly before submitting to check eligibility.

Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for University at Buffalo SUNY?

Ans. SBI, HDFC Credila, Bank of Baroda, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, and Prodigy Finance provide education loans covering UB SUNY tuition and living costs for Indian students. Loans up to INR 1.5 crore are available for STEM programmes without collateral through select NBFCs. Interest rates typically range from 9.5% to 12.5% depending on collateral and co-applicant profile.

Ques. Can F-1 students bring dependents to UB on an F-2 visa?

Ans. Yes, F-1 students at UB SUNY can bring their spouse and unmarried children under 21 on F-2 dependent visas. The primary F-1 holder must show additional financial proof of USD 6,000 per year for a spouse and USD 4,000 per year per child. F-2 spouses cannot work in the US but can enrol part-time in academic programmes at UB.

Ques. What is UB’s refund policy if I withdraw after enrollment?

Ans. UB SUNY follows a graduated tuition refund schedule based on withdrawal date. Students withdrawing before the first day of classes receive 100% refund, week 1 refund is 70%, week 2 is 50%, week 3 is 30%, and no refund after week 4. Mandatory fees are non-refundable after the first day of classes. Contact the Student Accounts office for the current-semester refund calendar.

Ques. How do Indian applicants submit WES verification to University at Buffalo SUNY?

Ans. Indian applicants order a WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation online, upload attested transcripts, and pay roughly USD 220 (INR 18,500). Universities colleges send transcripts directly to WES; WES then sends the evaluation electronically to UB SUNY using the recipient code. Allow 4 to 6 weeks end-to-end. UB accepts WES evaluations completed within the past 3 years for most graduate programmes.

  • There are 2 campuses – north and south. We were mostly in South campus which houses the engineering department. North campus has the medical department and also a hospital. There are quite a few festivals like Halloween, Diwali and Holi. There are a lot of social events at a smaller level too.
  • I was part of a technical group.
  • There were dj nights , pizza parties, hackathons and other events. Some events were sponsored by companies like bank of America, Bloomberg and Amazon.
  • There was a hackathon where bank of america exposed their API for us to build a business use case around it.

Fees

  • I was charged $20000 per year. Most of it was a course fee. There were other charges like an annual fee, examination fee, and course fee. The fee was collected annually.
  • I didn't join the hostel and stayed outside along with my friends. There is an entire area where students live. Mostly houses are 4-bedroom apartments.
  • My monthly rent was $250 per person per month. Groceries cost around $50 per person per week. Bus passes were included in the fee structure. Purchasing cold winter clothes is mandatory, as Buffalo is very cold.

  • 5 campuses, sports complex is really good it has olympic size swimming pool, and the recreation center has almost everything: wrestling, a gym, and badminton also they keep hosting events, so it's worth visiting. Oozefest is the most popular fest; it's more like Mudfest. The library is also really good. they also take frequent outdoor trips.

  • UB provides plenty of facilities to support student life, like libraries—there's one library on the north campus and one on the south campus, which basically offer vast resources for research and study. students who are interested in playing sports can visit state-of-the-art facilities like the Smolinski (I think that's the name) family sport medicine centre and UB Stadium, which is the home for the Buffalo Bulls football team.
  • Also, UB has 400+ student clubs and organizations, which helps students pick their interests for non-academic interests. These also include academic clubs, cultural organizations, hobby groups, and special interest councils. It's open for international students and native students as well. We are allowed to explore and join any of these groups through the UBLinked website.

Fees

  • I would say it was approximately $40,000 for international students.
    • Student Activity Fee: $150 per semester (included in semester fee)
    • Technology Fee: $100 per semester (included in semester fee)
    • Health Insurance: $2,500 per year (included in semester fee)
    • Rent (Off-campus shared apartment): $400–$600
    • Utilities: $100–$150
    • Groceries & Food: $250–$350
    • Transportation: $50–$100 (included in semester fee)
    • Miscellaneous (phone bill, entertainment, personal items): $200–$300
    • Total Estimated Monthly Expenses: Approximately $1000ish
  • These figures are estimates based on my lifestyle choice I made and my housing option I took.

  • 3 campuses. North, south, Downtown. North is the main campus and the largest one. All possible services are there like international students, sports, AI, entrepreneurship, library, career counselling, Entrepreneurship, writing help, language help, and mental help. AI club, UB blackstone launchpad, photography club. Student union with lots of fun activities on a regular basis. Oozefest is a popular event.

Fees

  • Semester-wise, for Fall terms it will be around $15k, including everything. Insurance costs are $1k for Fall and $1.5k for spring terms. Consider tuition fees around $12.5k excluding insurance; the remainder is miscellaneous costs for other facilities of the university.
  • I spend around $1.2K monthly, but generally others are spending $700-$800, including rent and groceries.
  • Transportation is included in miscellaneous costs and will be provided by the university.
