Clemson University vs Peer Universities
Peers are selected from USA public research universities that Indian MS Engineering applicants shortlist alongside Clemson.
| University | QS World 2027 | Avg Annual PG Tuition (USD / INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clemson University | #951-1000 | 29,276 / ₹28.03 lakh | Automotive and materials research anchored to BMW-Michelin corridor |
| North Carolina State University | #401 | 30,714 / ₹29.41 lakh | Larger Research Triangle recruiter base |
| Virginia Tech | #443 | 33,220 / ₹31.81 lakh | Broader engineering and CS spread |
| University of South Carolina | #701-710 | 32,882 / ₹31.48 lakh | In-state alternative; stronger Business school |

Clemson stands out on tuition value in the Tier 1 engineering cohort, undercutting the peer set by $1,500 to $4,000 per year while offering the same STEM OPT eligibility. Its funded assistantship rate for MS Mechanical and MS Materials Science is competitive with NC State and Virginia Tech.
Clemson University fits Indian applicants who want a mid-tier tuition of ₹28.03 lakh with a strong shot at engineering assistantships, targeting ₹49 lakh median starting salaries backed by the STEM OPT visa pathway and the automotive-manufacturing recruiter belt of the Carolinas.
It is not the right pick for applicants who want a top-100 QS world rank or a big-city campus with dense Indian recruiter presence in tech; those students should compare against MS universities in USA such as Purdue or NC State for a broader recruiter pool.
Clemson University FAQs
Ques. What is the application fee at Clemson University for Indian applicants?
Ans. The Clemson Graduate School charges a non-refundable application fee of $90 for international applicants, paid online by credit card at the time of submission. The fee is waived only for select recruitment events and McNair Scholars program alumni. Indian applicants should factor this cost alongside the WES credential-evaluation fee of roughly $175 and the standardized-test score-reporting fee.
Ques. Does Clemson University waive the GRE for MS Engineering programs?
Ans. Clemson has waived GRE for most MS Engineering tracks in the 2027 cycle, including MS Mechanical, MS Electrical and MS Industrial Engineering. MS Computer Science, MS Data Science, MS Physics and MS Chemistry either require or strongly recommend GRE General scores. Indian applicants should confirm the current-cycle policy on the department page before deciding to skip the test, as waiver rules shift annually.
Ques. How long can Clemson MS graduates stay in the USA on OPT?
Ans. Clemson MS graduates in STEM-designated programs qualify for 12 months of standard OPT plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving a total of 36 months of work authorization in the USA. MS Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science and most quantitative science tracks carry STEM designation. Non-STEM MS graduates receive 12 months of OPT and must pursue H-1B sponsorship to remain employed.
Ques. Are there part-time work options for Indian graduate students at Clemson?
Ans. F-1 international students at Clemson can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during semesters and full-time during official breaks. Off-campus employment requires Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorization tied to a required course or an OPT approval from USCIS. Common on-campus roles for Indian students include dining services, library assistants, IT help desk and departmental graduate assistantships.
Ques. Which Indian banks recognise Clemson for education loans?
Ans. Clemson features on the pre-approved lists of SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda and non-banking lenders including Prodigy Finance, Avanse and MPower. Collateral-backed loans typically fund up to ₹1.5 crore; unsecured loans from Prodigy and MPower reach $65,000 to $100,000 based on the program tier. Interest rates for secured loans start around 9.5% for the 2026-2027 cycle.
Ques. How does the dependent F-2 visa work for Clemson students?
Ans. Spouses and children under 21 of an F-1 student at Clemson can apply for an F-2 dependent visa. The F-1 student must show additional financial proof of roughly $6,000 per year per dependent on top of the standard cost-of-attendance figure. F-2 spouses cannot work in the USA and can only enrol in part-time academic study; F-2 children may attend K-12 schools full time in the Pickens County district around Clemson.
Ques. Can Indian students transfer credits from an Indian bachelor’s to Clemson?
Ans. Clemson accepts up to 12 graduate credit hours transferred from a regionally accredited institution towards a master’s degree, subject to advisor approval. Credits from an Indian bachelor’s are not transferable to MS coursework because they satisfy prerequisite standing, not graduate credit. Indian applicants with a prior MS from an IIT or NIT can petition to transfer credit for equivalent graduate-level courses after the first semester at Clemson.
Ques. What credential evaluation does Clemson accept for Indian transcripts?
Ans. Clemson Graduate School accepts course-by-course credential evaluations from WES (World Education Services), ECE and any member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). WES is the most commonly used by Indian applicants because Indian universities can send transcripts directly to WES electronically. The evaluation takes 4 to 7 business days after WES receives all documents and costs approximately $175.

I chose Clemson University since they have a lot of good courses to offer for the graduate program and I saw on their website that they had a lot of research opportunities.
Fees
The fee for the graduate program of Mechanical Engineering is $12500 per semester (9 or more credits). However, assistantships are available for students choosing the MS Thesis option. These assistantships are provided each semester based on the thesis advisor's recommendation. The living expenses are quite low in Clemson and cost around $400-$500.
Overview
I chose this college because it was one of the only colleges providing a specialized course for automotive engineers.
Fees
Around 16000 dollars per semester.
Overview
I live very close to the university and always wanted to attend since I can remember. This is the only college I applied to partly because I was 26th in a class of 300 and had a 26 on the ACT so I felt confident in my chances to get accepted. I had many friends in the grades above me apply to Clemson so they showed me what was best to do and once accepted gave tips.
Fees
Typical in-state tuition is $13,000 per semester. Discover Loans is a partner with the financial aid department and is the easiest to utilize. As an in-state student, I have the South Carolina Life Scholarship as my only form of financial aid. This requires I take 30 credits a year and keep a GPA of 3.0.
Overview
The reason most people come to Clemson is for that feeling of family. Everywhere you go someone will see your Clemson attire and you instantly have that connection. It's great for networking. Not to mention the incredible athletics and research opportunities.
Fees
My tuition was around $40,000 for out of state. However, this does include food and housing. After scholarships and financial aid, it's significantly lower.
Overview
The campus is really pretty with the pond in the center. The atmosphere is safer and more personal than Columbia. The football programs are great. Tough school so a diploma from there will definitely be a good one. And the lake is a minute away.
Fees
For a full-time student, fees are like $1,000 on top of tuition which really isn't that cheap either even if you are in-state. Meal plans are expensive, living on campus is expensive, and parking is outrageously expensive. Parking passes for the year are like $350. Stupid when we pay so much for stuff anyway.
