University of Pittsburgh Admission 2027
Pitt runs two annual intakes for international applicants: Fall in August and Spring in January. Most Indian graduate applicants target the larger Fall cohort where teaching and research assistantship budgets sit. Deadlines below trace to the official Swanson School Graduate Admissions calendar and Pitt’s international admissions office.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Spring 2027 graduate application (Engineering) | 15 October 2026 | Applies to Swanson School; other departments review on a rolling basis |
| Fall 2027 international undergraduate scholarship priority | 1 February 2027 | Automatic review for up to $10,000 award |
| Fall 2027 graduate funded assistantship priority | 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027 | Date varies by Engineering department; earliest for Bioengineering and Mechanical |
| Fall 2027 international undergraduate and graduate standard deadline | 1 April 2027 | Universal deadline across most Engineering departments; verify programme-specific date |
| Credential verification (WES or ECE) | Start 6 to 8 weeks before submission | Required US-style evaluation of Indian academic transcripts |
[Source: University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering Graduate Admissions]
Planning note: Indian applicants seeking assistantship funding should treat the December to January window as the operative Fall 2027 deadline, not the April 2027 standard date; assistantship budgets are exhausted well before April.

University of Pittsburgh Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Pitt’s admission thresholds are set at the school level, and Indian applicants must clear both the academic and the English language bars set by Pitt’s international admissions office.
Postgraduate Requirements for Indian Applicants
- Bachelor’s degree: four-year Indian bachelor’s with 55% or CGPA 6.0/10 for most programmes; Engineering MS tracks recommend 60% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended).
- English test minimums: TOEFL iBT 100 (0-120 legacy scale) or 5.0 (1-6 new scale) with subscores of 20 or 4.0; IELTS 7.0 composite with subscores of 6.0; Duolingo English Test 125.
- Credential evaluation: course-by-course WES or ECE evaluation of every Indian transcript is required for graduate admission.
- Standardised tests: GRE recommended but optional for most MS Engineering tracks; GMAT required for the Katz MBA.
Undergraduate Requirements for Indian Applicants
- Class 12 board result: 80% to 90% across CBSE, ICSE and major state boards (recommended).
- English test minimums: TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 7.0 or Duolingo 125; regional Pitt campuses at Bradford, Greensburg or Johnstown accept TOEFL 80 to 89, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 115 to 120.
- Application package: Common Application submission, one recommendation letter and a personal statement.
Key insight: Pitt does not accept TOEFL MyBest or TOEFL Essentials scores. Only the standard iBT or iBT Home Edition results within a two-year validity window are counted, so plan your test date to fall inside that window before your submission deadline.
University of Pittsburgh Acceptance Rate 2027
Pitt does not publish a single global acceptance rate for international students, but third-party admissions data places the overall rate at 42% to 50% (estimated) for the most recent cycle. Selectivity varies sharply by school: Nursing and Computer Science admit at rates well below the university average, while Dietrich Arts and Sciences admits closer to the upper end. The estimate below reflects reasonable reliability but is not an official Pitt figure.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 entering cohort | 42% to 50% (estimated) | Broadly flat vs prior cycle |
| 2025 entering cohort | 49% (estimated) | Slight loosening as applications normalised |
For Indian graduate applicants the effective admit rate at Swanson School MS Engineering tracks and Katz Business runs materially lower than the university-wide figure. Meeting the recommended CGPA and English score minimums moves the application into the reviewable pile, not the admit pile.
Reality check: An Indian CGPA of 7.5/10 plus IELTS 7.5 puts you in the median band, not the strong band; for MS Computer Science and MS Industrial Engineering, target CGPA 8.0/10 and add a research paper or internship for a genuinely competitive Fall 2027 application.

Monthly Cost of Living in Pittsburgh for Indian Students at University of Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh remains one of the more affordable major US university cities. Off-campus one-bedroom rent in Oakland or Squirrel Hill runs 25% to 35% below comparable Boston or New York rates. Graduate students typically live off-campus after the first term.
| Category | Monthly (USD) | Monthly (INR) |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (1BR outside centre) | $1,126 | ₹1.08 lakh |
| Food and groceries | $500 | ₹47,900 |
| Transportation | Included (Pittsburgh Regional Transit via student ID) | Included |
| Utilities and internet | $253 | ₹24,200 |
| Books, supplies and personal | $400 | ₹38,300 |
| Total monthly | $2,279 | ₹2.18 lakh |
| Annual total | $27,348 | ₹26.2 lakh |
Insider note: Rents in Oakland (walkable to campus) run $200 to $400 higher than Squirrel Hill or Shadyside. The 61A, 61B and 61C bus routes are free with a Pitt student ID and connect all three neighbourhoods to central campus within 15 minutes.

University of Pittsburgh Campus, Facilities and Student Life
Pitt’s main campus sits in the Oakland neighbourhood of Pittsburgh, a walkable university district adjacent to Carnegie Mellon University and the UPMC medical complex.
- Location and transit: Oakland district, three miles east of downtown Pittsburgh, with free student access to Pittsburgh Regional Transit across the entire city bus and light-rail network.
- Housing: First-year undergraduates guaranteed on-campus housing; graduate students typically live off-campus with monthly rent of $900 to $1,400 (₹86,175 to ₹1.34 lakh) in Oakland or Squirrel Hill.
- Academic facilities: Hillman Library main branch, 32 research institutes, and clinical partnerships with UPMC across the medical school and School of Nursing.
- Indian student community: The Indian Graduate Student Association and Hindu Students Council run regular cultural events; Squirrel Hill and Shadyside host multiple Indian grocers and restaurants.
- Recreation: Free access to the Petersen Sports Complex, Trees Hall gymnasium and Pitt Panthers Atlantic Coast Conference athletic events with a valid student ID.
What Indian students say: Winter runs long from November to March, so factor in warm outerwear costs of $300 to $500 in the first term. The graduate assistantship stipend of $22,000 to $30,000 per year covers rent and food comfortably in Squirrel Hill but not the tuition balance.
University of Pittsburgh Scholarships 2027
Pitt offers one significant institutional scholarship stream open to international undergraduate applicants, plus graduate assistantships routed through individual departments. The Pitt Financial Aid office and departmental funding pages are the two operative channels for Indian applicants.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| International Freshmen Scholarship | Merit (institutional) | Up to $10,000 per year (₹9.6 lakh) | International first-year undergraduate applicants; automatic review | 1 February 2027 |
| Graduate Teaching and Research Assistantships | Assistantship (departmental) | Full tuition remission plus $22,000 to $30,000 annual stipend | Primarily PhD applicants; select MS students in Engineering and Sciences | Aligned with departmental funding deadline (typically 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027 for Fall 2027) |
[Source: University of Pittsburgh Office of Admissions and Financial Aid]
Beyond institutional funding, Indian graduate applicants also route through external programmes including the Fulbright Foreign Student Program administered by USIEF and AAUW International Fellowships worth up to $50,000. Pitt maintains a searchable scholarship database called PittFundsMe for enrolled students.
Planning note: Master’s applicants without funded PhD tracks should budget for full tuition. Institutional MS scholarships at Pitt are limited to a handful of School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences awards. Bank education loans or Fulbright/AAUW routes are the realistic funding paths for most Indian MS applicants.

University of Pittsburgh Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Pitt does not publish a single university-wide graduate placement rate for international students, but school-level outcomes are strong in medicine, engineering and business.
- Katz MBA employment within 3 months of graduation: approximately 90% (recent cohort, university-disclosed)
- Katz MBA median base salary: $115,000 (₹1.10 crore) plus median signing bonus (US market median)
- MS Engineering starting salary band: $75,000 to $105,000 (₹71.8 lakh to ₹1.00 crore) US labour market median for Swanson School graduates
- Sector recruiters (representative, not disclosed): UPMC, PNC Financial Services, Google, BNY Mellon, Deloitte, Amazon, PwC and regional technology and healthcare employers
- Career support: University Career Center runs dedicated international student advising, F-1 to STEM OPT and H-1B sponsorship workshops each semester
Insider note: Pittsburgh is a growing tech and healthcare hub anchored by UPMC, Google Pittsburgh, Duolingo and Aurora Innovation. Indian STEM MS graduates often stay in the region for OPT roles rather than migrating to Bay Area or New York, keeping the effective cost-to-first-salary ratio favourable.
University of Pittsburgh vs Peer Universities
The peer set below anchors Pitt against nearby Pennsylvania publics, a comparable Midwest public and a higher-ranked benchmark. QS ranks are for the 2027 edition.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD/INR) | One-line Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Pittsburgh | #279 | #133 global (#48 USA) | $51,810 to $63,856 (₹49.6 lakh to ₹61.2 lakh) | Top 10 US News rank in Surgery; strong medicine and humanities blend |
| Penn State University | #98 (estimated) | Verify at collegedunia.com | $40,000 to $50,000 (estimated) | Larger cohort and Big Ten athletics; more affordable for out-of-state |
| Ohio State University | #159 (estimated) | Verify at collegedunia.com | $45,000 to $55,000 (estimated) | Bigger business school and national football brand |
| Case Western Reserve University | #285 (estimated) | Verify at collegedunia.com | $55,000 to $68,000 (estimated) | Nearby Ohio private with stronger biomedical research funding |
Pitt sits in a distinctive competitive slot: cheaper than East Coast privates like Case Western, better ranked than most regional publics on the US News global scale, and closer than Ohio State to the UPMC healthcare talent pipeline. For Indian medicine and clinical research applicants specifically, the Pitt and UPMC clinical partnership is the strongest US public option outside the top-tier Ivy medical schools.
Conclusion
The University of Pittsburgh fits Indian applicants targeting healthcare, medicine, philosophy or Swanson School engineering with a total two-year MS investment of $130,000 to $150,000 (₹1.24 crore to ₹1.44 crore) against a US-median starting salary of $75,000 to $115,000. Its clearest India-specific advantage is the STEM OPT plus H-1B pathway backed by a strong Pittsburgh employer base including UPMC, Google and PNC.
It is not the strongest fit for Indian applicants chasing purely branded MBA prestige or heavy institutional MS scholarships. Applicants with those priorities should also evaluate Purdue University or Ohio State University for lower-cost STEM MS options with comparable placement reach.
University of Pittsburgh FAQs
Ques. Are Indian bachelor’s degrees accepted for MS admission at Pitt?
Ans. Yes. A four-year Indian bachelor’s degree from a UGC-recognised university is accepted for master’s admission at the University of Pittsburgh. Three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees are evaluated case-by-case and typically require WES or ECE evaluation confirming US bachelor equivalence, or an additional year of coursework. Engineering and Computing MS tracks recommend CGPA 6.5/10 or higher, while Dietrich Arts and Sciences MS/MA tracks accept CGPA 6.0/10 or higher.
Ques. Can international students work part-time at University of Pittsburgh?
Ans. Yes. F-1 visa holders may work up to 20 hours per week during Fall and Spring terms in on-campus roles, including library, dining, research and departmental positions. Off-campus employment is restricted and requires either Curricular Practical Training authorisation tied to a course-related internship or Optional Practical Training after the first academic year. The Office of International Services processes all work authorisation for enrolled international students.
Ques. What is the F-1 visa process for Indian students at Pitt?
Ans. After receiving the University of Pittsburgh admission letter and financial documentation review, Pitt issues an I-20 form. The student pays the SEVIS I-901 fee of $350, completes the DS-160 online form, pays the visa application fee of $185 and books an interview at the US consulate in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or Hyderabad. Slots for Fall entry fill fastest in April and May.
Ques. Does University of Pittsburgh accept 3-year Indian bachelor’s degrees for MS?
Ans. Most departments prefer a four-year Indian bachelor’s for graduate admission. Three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees are reviewed by WES for US equivalence and are sometimes accepted with an additional post-graduate diploma or Indian master’s degree completed. Applicants with a three-year BCom, BA or BSc should submit a WES course-by-course evaluation and confirm eligibility with the target Pitt department before applying to avoid a wasted application fee.
Ques. What education loans do Indian banks approve for Pitt?
Ans. Major Indian public and private lenders including SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, IDFC First and Avanse pre-approve education loans up to ₹1.5 crore for the University of Pittsburgh, given the institution’s US News global top-60 ranking. Loans are typically secured with property collateral above ₹40 lakh and unsecured below that threshold. Interest rates in the current cycle range 9.5% to 12% depending on lender and co-applicant profile.
Ques. Is a GRE waiver available at University of Pittsburgh?
Ans. Yes. The Swanson School of Engineering has made GRE submission optional for most MS programmes since the 2021 admission cycle, and this policy continues for Fall 2027. Katz MBA still requires GMAT or GRE with limited waivers for applicants with five or more years of full-time work experience. School of Public Health and School of Computing MS programmes are largely GRE optional. Confirm the specific policy on the department admissions page.
Ques. How long does STEM OPT last at Pitt?
Ans. Indian graduates of a designated STEM master’s programme at the University of Pittsburgh receive the standard 12 months of Optional Practical Training plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, for a total of 36 months of work authorisation on the F-1 visa. Most Swanson Engineering MS tracks, MS Computer Science and MS Information Science qualify as STEM designated programmes eligible for the 24-month extension.
Ques. What is the application fee at University of Pittsburgh and can it be waived?
Ans. The undergraduate application fee is $55 and the graduate application fee is $75 for most schools; Katz MBA and Swanson School PhD applications may charge higher. Fee waivers are available for applicants demonstrating financial hardship, participants in specific pipeline programmes and applicants who attend a Pitt recruitment event. International applicants should request the waiver in writing to the target department admissions office before submitting the Common Application or ApplyYourself form.

- Tuition cost: Even though Pitt offers great scholarships, the tuition fees are on the higher side especially for international students compared it to other public universities.
- Limited diversity: Some programs here at Pitt have less diversity of people. For example: my cohort has only one international student that is me.
- High cost of housing: Since the university is located in the city, the cost of housing is pretty high.

- As master students, we don't have enough time to get into extracurricular but we have career/academic-focused events that help us in our career that I can mention about. I recently traveled to New Jersey for a case competition representing the university. But there are numerous students organisations and clubs to be a part of!

Overview
Top rated public university in the country. Frequent career fairs (job fairs). Ample on-campus job opportunities. Affordable city for living (rent is cheaper). Free public transportation for students.
Overview
I was interested in Natural Language Processing and there is some good research done in this university
Fees
Tuition is slightly expensive, but the overall experience of the city and the learning curve kind of balances that cost. living expenses are cheap so that balances the other costs too Tuition about 56k $ (for duration of program) living expenses: 400-500$ (upper limit, per month) rent: 400-500$ ( lower limit, per month) misc expenses: 200$ (per month)
Overview
The location was near home and in a good place. The school name is world renowned. I knew there were a lot of alumni, especially in my field. Overall seemed like a good choice for undergraduates studies.
Fees
Tuition is the hefty part that costs over the thousands. Housing and food is the second large charge. The other charges are transportation and technology fees and student life.
Overview
I was looking for a medium-sized school in the Midwest or east coast, as well as an accessible urban campus where I would be able to do things outside of the school. Pitt checked all the boxes and I fell in love with the campus when I visited for the first time.
Fees
All fees are included in a lump sum of tuition payment. This includes a bus pass, tuition, wellness fees, student insurance, etc.
