FAQs

Ques. Is University of Pennsylvania good for Indian students?

Ans. Yes. Penn is an Ivy League university and one of the top 10 in the US. It is especially strong for Indian students interested in Business (Wharton), Engineering and Computer Science (SEAS), Law (Penn Carey Law), and Medicine (Perelman). The Wharton School in particular has a large and active Indian student community. Philadelphia is also more affordable than NYC or Boston, which helps with overall cost of living

Ques. What is the acceptance rate at Penn for international students?

Ans. For the Class of 2029 (Fall 2025), Penn received 17,882 international applications and made 441 offers — an international acceptance rate of 2.5%. The overall acceptance rate across all applicants was 5%. Penn does not publish a separate figure for Indian students specifically.

Ques. What is the total cost of attending Penn for Indian students?

Ans. For 2026-27, the official total Cost of Attendance (COA) for an undergraduate student living on campus is $99,082/year (approximately ₹83.63 Lakhs). This includes tuition ($65,670), university fees ($8,308), housing, meals, books, transport, and personal expenses. For Wharton MBA students, the total annual budget is $135,441 (approximately ₹1.14 Crores), including tuition of $87,970.

Ques. Does Penn give financial aid to international Indian students?

Ans. Yes, but with important conditions. Penn is need-aware for international students, meaning financial need can reduce your chances of admission. Indian students who need aid must apply for it at the same time as they apply for admission — applying for aid after admission is not permitted. Penn will only admit international aid applicants if it can fully fund them. Students admitted without aid in Year 1 cannot apply for aid later. If your family can afford the full fees, Penn's official guidance is to not apply for aid, as it will hurt your admission chances

Ques. What English test scores does Penn require?

Ans. Penn accepts TOEFL iBT, IELTS, and the Duolingo English Test. Most competitive applicants score TOEFL iBT 100+, IELTS 7.0+, or Duolingo 130+. Indian students who completed all four years of high school with English as the primary language of instruction are exempt from submitting a language test. Penn does not accept MyBest TOEFL scores or the IELTS Indicator exam.

Ques. Which are the top programs at Penn for Indian students?

Ans. The most popular Penn programs among Indian applicants are:

  • Wharton MBA — one of the top-ranked MBA programs globally
  • SEAS MS in Computer Science and Data Science — strong for engineering and tech careers
  • BS at Wharton (undergraduate) — highly sought after for Finance and Business
  • BS in Computer Science (SEAS) — strong placement in US tech companies
  • Penn Carey Law JD — ranked #4 in the US
  • PhD programs — fully funded across Engineering, Sciences, and Humanities

Ques. Is there an Indian student community at Penn?

Ans. Yes. Penn has active Indian student organisations including the South Asian Society (SAS), Penn India Initiative, and the Wharton India Economic Forum (WIEF) — one of the largest student-run business conferences in the US. Diwali and Holi celebrations are held annually on campus. Philadelphia also has Indian grocery stores, restaurants, and a growing diaspora community. New York City's large Indian community (including Edison, NJ) is just 1.5 hours away.

Ques. What is Wharton known for?

Ans. Wharton is Penn's business school and one of the most recognised in the world. It offers both an undergraduate business degree (one of very few Ivy League schools to do so) and a full-time MBA. Wharton is consistently ranked in the top 3 US MBA programs and top 5 globally. It is particularly strong in Finance, Investment Banking, Consulting, Private Equity, and Entrepreneurship. The Wharton alumni network of 105,000+ spans 153 countries, which is a significant advantage for Indian students seeking global careers.

Ques. Are SEAS MS programs at Penn good for Indian engineering students?

Ans. Yes. SEAS (School of Engineering and Applied Science) is well-regarded for MS programs in Computer Science, Data Science, and Electrical Engineering. SEAS graduates qualify for 3-year STEM OPT, which is a major advantage for Indian students seeking post-study work authorization in the US. The Philadelphia location and Penn's proximity to New York also provide access to strong tech and finance recruiters. One thing to note: SEAS MS tuition is charged per course unit ($8,825 per CU), not as a flat annual fee — a typical full-load year (8 CU) costs around $70,600 in tuition alone.

Ques. Can Indian PhD students get fully funded at Penn?

Ans. Yes. PhD programs across Penn — including Engineering, Sciences, Humanities, and Social Sciences — are typically fully funded. This means tuition is waived and students receive an annual living stipend. Funding is competitive and tied to research fit and faculty availability. Indian students applying for PhD programs do not need to worry about the need-aware financial aid policy that applies to undergraduates — PhD funding is separate from undergraduate financial aid.

We champion the interests of students across all twelve graduate schools (G12) as well as several campus affinity groups (IDEAL), collaborating closely with administrators to ensure student perspectives drive policy. Our General Assembly (GA) is proportionally composed of graduate and professional students elected by each G12 member, as well as IDEAL representatives. The GA elects our President, Vice Presidents, and Council Chairs, who in turn appoint Directors and Deputies to help execute GAPSA essential functions and special projects. The GA convenes biweekly on Wednesday evenings

Overview

Good experience, a lot of like minded people but wish there were more networking events.

Lots of clubs but would have been nice if it was more accessible to graduate students as much as the undergrad students.

Overview

I heard about Penn from some of my friends who were older than me. I only applied to Penn and Princeton, and Penn was my first choice because I have just heard so many wonderful things about it. I thought if I didn't get into Penn during its early decision round, I would apply to Princeton during regular decision.

Fees

I did not apply to any loans or scholarships but I had friends who reached out to Penn in order to find out more about their various financing options and which organizations would accept scholarship applications from international students. Some students also received a lot of funds through Penn rather than from outside sources.

Good scholarship, ivy league so a lot of connections and opportunities not available from other local colleges, great diversity in the college so I won't feel out of place, close to my home so I can visit my friends and family with ease.

Over 70,000 a year for tuition and board. There are technology fees for each school, dining plan fees.

This is a urban campus located in Philadelphia which is USA's 4th largest city. You get a lot of option to go out and have fun. It is also pretty convenient in terms of transportation. There are Ice skating rinks and rowing trails around the city. Libraries on campus as well as free library of Philadelphia are pretty awesome. Penn has a large infrastructure dedicated to sports facilities, there are olympic size pools and multi storeyed gym for students.

The campus is very lively with diverse communities. There is atleast one event everyday, making student interactions very evident. There is nothing that is not available at Upenn, be it a supercomputer or be it a mere 3D printer, and that too free of cost for the students.
