SNAP Blood Relations Weightage

Analytical and Logical Reasoning is the largest section in SNAP at 25 of the 60 questions. Relationship questions appear most years, usually one to three of them, and they are among the quickest marks in the paper.

Blood relations questions do not age. The logic in a 2006 question is identical to a 2025 one, unlike current-affairs material, so the whole range is worth attempting.

What the 21 Questions Cover

• Direct chains, where a single sentence has to be unwound from the far end
• Coded relations, where symbols stand for father, mother, brother and sister
• Family puzzles, where eight members and a few in-law clues fix the whole tree
• Counting questions, asking how many men or women a described household holds
• Minimum-size questions, where overlapping roles mean fewer people than the list suggests

How to Approach the Set

Resolve the innermost phrase first. "My father's son" is the speaker, and reading a nested chain outwards instead of inwards is the single most common way these go wrong.

Then check what gender each symbol or word fixes. It often discards half the options before any reasoning starts. Constraints like "has no siblings" or a stated tally of men and women are load-bearing, not decoration, and they usually resolve the last ambiguity.

One fact worth holding onto: an uncle's son is a cousin, never a nephew. It is the most frequently exploited slip in the set.

When It Cannot Be Determined

Two of the 21 resolve to no single relationship, and both make the same point. A grandparent link always branches two ways, so unless the question names the mother's side or the father's side, the chain stays open.

A 2025 question is the clean example. Kawan is the grandfather of the speaker's nephew, but Kawan could be that boy's paternal or maternal grandfather, making him either the speaker's father or no blood relation at all. Candidates who force a single answer lose the mark.

Common Mistakes

• Reading a nested phrase outwards instead of inwards
• Counting a child among its own siblings in a minimum-size question
• Forgetting that married sons imply wives when counting a household
• Assuming the relation has to be one of the named options
• Adding overlapping roles together rather than finding the smallest family that fits

Three to Solve First

The 2019 direct chain: "That man's father is my father's son." Resolve the inner phrase and the whole question collapses into one line.

The 2022 family puzzle, eight members and three married couples. The clue that unlocks it is that one person has no siblings, which forces him to be married in rather than born in.

The 2007 minimum-size question, where a reunion lists fourteen roles but warns that fewer people attended than it sounds. Building the smallest family that covers every role gives seven.
