How Much Mechanics Comes in VITEEE Physics
Physics is 35 of the 125 questions in VITEEE. Unit 1 is the broadest of its seven units: it covers mechanics and properties of matter, and, less obviously, heat and thermodynamics.

2025 was unusually heavy. Marking changed in 2026 as well: plus four and minus one, where every earlier paper awarded one mark and took nothing away for a wrong answer.
The four questions from 2026 ask for a value rather than a lettered option. VIT does not release its papers, so what survives of that year is the question and its answer, not the printed choices.
Formulas Worth Memorising
- K = p squared over 2m, for anything that links energy to momentum
- W = the integral of F dx, whenever the force changes with position
- Terminal velocity rises as the square of the radius
- Young's modulus = stress over strain
- Bernoulli: P + half rho v squared + rho g h stays constant along a streamline
- Carnot efficiency = 1 minus T2 over T1, in kelvin
How to Approach the Set
Mechanics rewards recognising the quantity that is conserved. Collisions conserve momentum. Merging drops conserve volume. An isolated gas conserves energy. Find that first and the algebra usually collapses to one line.
The second habit worth building is unit discipline. Several of these questions hide a conversion, and where they do, the unconverted answer is usually sitting there as one of the four options.
Where a question relates two quantities by a power law, take logs and differentiate. A messy percentage-change question becomes a one-line ratio.
Common Mistakes
- An increase of 300% makes a quantity four times its original value, not three
- A varying force has to be integrated. Multiplying by the final force doubles the answer
- When two drops coalesce, volume adds. Radius does not
- Carnot efficiency in Celsius lands on a distractor every time
- At equal kinetic energy the momenta go as the square root of the masses, not the masses
Two to Solve First
The 2025 coalescing-drops question is the most useful ninety seconds in the booklet. Two equal drops fall at terminal velocity and merge; conserving volume gives the new radius, and the rest follows. Adding the radii instead gives exactly the option that is offered as bait.
After that, the 2023 Carnot engine. It needs two conversions, Celsius to kelvin and calories to joules, and skipping either one lands on a listed option.
