Educational Qualification for NID DAT 2027

The required qualification differs based on the programme you choose. Details for each are below.

For B.Des (Bachelor of Design)

You must have passed or be appearing in the Class 12 (10+2) examination or an equivalent from any recognised state or central board. There is no restriction on stream — students from Science, Commerce, Arts, or vocational streams are all eligible. Students awaiting Class 12 results can apply provisionally; admission will be withdrawn if the required marks are not achieved.

For M.Des (Master of Design)

You must hold a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline (minimum 3 years) from a university recognised by the UGC or AICTE. Students in the final year of their graduation may apply on a provisional basis. A minimum of 50% marks (45% for SC/ST/PwD students) in the qualifying degree is required. Admission will be subject to producing the degree and mark sheets at document verification.

For GDPD (Graduate Diploma in Product Design)

You must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Design, Engineering, Architecture, or any related field. This one-year programme is designed for fresh graduates and working professionals seeking advanced specialisation in product design. Relevant work experience, while not mandatory, can strengthen your studio test performance.

NID DAT 2027 Age Limit

NID does not prescribe an upper or lower age limit for any of its programmes, including B.Des, M.Des, and GDPD. This open-age policy allows working professionals, career changers, and gap-year students to apply without any age-related barrier.

In practice, most B.Des applicants are 17 years or older since they must have appeared in Class 12. However, NID’s official admissions brochure does not state a minimum age — students should confirm the latest position in the NID DAT 2027 Information Brochure when it is released.

Programme Minimum Age Maximum Age
B.Des Not specified (must have appeared in Class 12) No upper limit
M.Des Not specified (must hold a Bachelor’s degree) No upper limit
GDPD Not specified (must hold a Bachelor’s degree) No upper limit

Number of Attempts for NID DAT 2027

There is no restriction on the number of times you can appear for NID DAT. Unlike some national entrance exams, NID places no cap on attempts for any of its programmes. You can appear for the exam in consecutive years as long as you satisfy the educational eligibility at the time of each application.

This policy is especially useful for students who qualify in the prelims stage but do not clear the studio test (Mains), or for those who wish to improve their overall score and try for a more competitive design specialisation in a subsequent year. There is no penalty or disadvantage for having appeared in previous cycles.
