Ques. Is age relaxation available for EWS students in NID DAT 2026?
Ans. No. EWS students do not receive any age relaxation under NID DAT 2026. EWS students must meet the same age limit as General/UR students — for B.Des, this means being born on or after July 1, 2005. Age relaxation is limited to SC/ST/OBC-NCL students (+3 years) and PwD students (+5 years).
Ques. Is my OBC certificate from a previous year valid for NID DAT 2026?
Ans. No. OBC-NCL certificates must be dated on or after April 1, 2026 to be valid for NID DAT 2026. A certificate issued in financial year 2024-25 (before April 1, 2026) is not accepted. This annual renewal rule exists because Non-Creamy Layer status is income-based and must be verified for the current year. If your certificate is older, apply to the relevant competent authority (DM/SDM/Tehsildar) for a fresh certificate before your NID DAT 2026 counselling date.
Ques. Does NID DAT have a separate reservation for women students?
Ans. No. NID does not offer gender-based reservation. There is no women’s quota or separate merit list for female students at any of the seven NID campuses. All seats are allocated based on category-wise vertical reservation (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS) and horizontal PwD reservation. Women students compete on the same merit list as men within their respective reservation category.
Ques. Can a student who belongs to a state OBC list claim OBC-NCL reservation at NID?
Ans. No. Only castes listed in the Central OBC list maintained by NCBC (National Commission for Backward Classes) qualify for OBC-NCL reservation at NID campuses. NID is a central institution and its OBC-NCL reservation is governed by the central OBC framework — state-only OBC lists are not recognised. If your caste appears only on a state list and not the central list, apply under the General category. You can verify your caste’s central OBC status on the NCBC website.
Ques. What happens to reserved seats if no students from a category qualify in NID DAT 2026?
Ans. Unfilled reserved seats follow the Government of India’s seat conversion rules. The conversion order is: ST seats convert to SC first; remaining unfilled SC/converted-ST seats convert to OBC-NCL; then to EWS; and finally to UR/General. Reserved seats are never directly transferred to the General pool without this sequential conversion, which ensures maximum utilisation within the reserved framework before opening seats to all-category competition.
Ques. How is PwD reservation applied in NID DAT 2026 — is it a separate pool?
Ans. PwD reservation in NID DAT 2026 is horizontal, not a separate vertical pool. This means 5% of seats within each vertical category are earmarked for PwD students — creating sub-categories: UR-PwD, OBC-NCL-PwD, SC-PwD, ST-PwD, and EWS-PwD. A student with a disability who also belongs to OBC-NCL would compete in the OBC-NCL-PwD pool, benefiting from both the OBC-NCL vertical reservation and the PwD horizontal benefit simultaneously. The minimum benchmark disability is 40% as defined under the RPWD Act, 2016.

NID do offers reservations into its course for disable students. As per the reservation policy, Persons with disabilities (PwD) will be given a 5% horizontal reservation of seats from the parent category in each program, cutting across all sections, i.e. SC, ST, OBC (Non-Creamy only), and General category. 15% supernumerary seats of NID DAT are reserved for foreign nationals. Students who have applied and taken NID DAT under Overseas category are eligible to apply for this reservation.
