History of Homeopathic Medicine in India

BHMS Doctor can do Surgery?

A BHMS Doctor is not hired by hospitals or nursing homes to perform surgery. Homoeopathy deals with the body's art of healing the diseases, thus the use of surgery is not present in the world of BHMS ideally.

A person has to go through MBBS (bachelor of Medicine and bachelor of Surgery) and MS(master of Surgery) courses to be able to perform a surgery.

In rare, emergency situations when there is no doctor present in the vicinity, a BHMS Doctor can lend his hand for surgery. But he/she must avoid it. If there is an option of applying minor surgeries so that the injured person can be transported to the nearest medical institution then the BHMS doctor must do that.

This Bill allowed the Ayurvedic and Homeopathic doctors to be allowed to practice allopathy after clearing a bridge course after BHMS. The National Medical Commission Bill, 2017, sought to replace the existing apex medical education regulator, the Medical Council of India (MCI), with a new body but there was tremendous resistance to this move by the Government.

A parliamentary panel had been entrusted to review the new National Medical Commission Bill on healthcare in India.

Finally, it advised the government to scrap its proposal for a bridge course after BHMS to allow AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) practitioners practice Allopathy.

Despite dropping the bridge course, the states were given the choice regarding the matter. Many states have already allowed AYUSH doctors appointed in Primary Health Centres in rural areas to practice allopathy during ‘emergencies’.
