What is AIBE 22?
AIBE 22 is the twenty-second edition of the All India Bar Examination conducted by the Bar Council of India. The exam checks whether a law graduate has the basic knowledge needed to practise law in India. You must clear AIBE to get the Certificate of Practice (CoP) from your State Bar Council.
The exam does not rank you against other students. It only checks if you cross the qualifying mark. This makes AIBE a qualifying exam, not a competitive one. There is no seat limit and no merit list.
- Full form: All India Bar Examination XXII
- Conducting body: Bar Council of India (BCI)
- Exam level: National level, post-LLB certification exam
- Frequency: Once or twice a year, depending on the BCI schedule
- Mode: Offline, OMR-based pen and paper test
- Official website: allindiabarexamination.com
AIBE started in 2010 after a BCI resolution made the bar exam compulsory for all new advocates. Since then, more than 20 editions have been held. In AIBE 21, a total of 1,75,701 students appeared and 1,15,805 qualified.

AIBE 22 Exam Day Guidelines and Bare Acts Rules
AIBE is often called an open book exam, but that is only partly true. Since 2021, BCI has restricted what you can carry inside the hall.
You can carry bare acts into the AIBE 22 exam hall, but they must be clean copies without notes or commentary. Study material, guides, and handwritten notes are not allowed.

| AIBE 22 Admit Card | Printed copy, mandatory |
| Valid Photo ID | Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, or driving licence |

What is Banned in the AIBE 22 Exam Hall
- Textbooks, guide books, and coaching material
- Handwritten notes and photocopied summaries
- Annotated bare acts with case laws or commentary printed inside
- Mobile phones, smart watches, Bluetooth devices, and calculators
- Bags, wallets, and any printed material other than bare acts
Note: The invigilator takes the final call on whether your bare act is allowed. Carry clean, unmarked copies so your material is not seized at the gate.

AIBE 22 Qualifying Marks and Cutoff
The AIBE 22 qualifying marks decide whether you pass or fail. BCI sets 45% for General and OBC students and 40% for SC, ST, and PwD students.
| Category | Qualifying Percentage | Marks Needed (Out of 100) |
|---|---|---|
| General / OBC | 45% | 45 marks |
| SC / ST / PwD | 40% | 40 marks |
Revised AIBE Cutoff in Previous Years
BCI sometimes lowers the cutoff after the exam if the paper turns out tough. This happened in AIBE 21, where the cutoff was revised downward.
| Exam | General / OBC Cutoff | SC / ST / PwD Cutoff |
|---|---|---|
| AIBE 22 (2026) | 45 marks (Expected) | 40 marks (Expected) |
| AIBE 21 (2026) | 42 marks (Revised) | 37 marks (Revised) |
| AIBE 20 (2025) | 45 marks | 40 marks |
You should aim for 60 marks or more instead of targeting the bare minimum. A buffer protects you if BCI drops a few questions from the final answer key.
Check the year-wise AIBE cutoff to understand how the qualifying mark has moved.

- The CoP usually reaches students 2 to 3 months after the result.
- You collect it from the State Bar Council where you enrolled.
- Without a CoP, you stay enrolled but cannot practise in court.
- The certificate has lifetime validity and does not need renewal through AIBE again.
You can track the release through the AIBE result page.

AIBE 22 Preparation Tips 2026
You have around three months left for AIBE 22. This is enough time if you plan your study around the bare acts you can carry into the hall.
- Master the bare acts first. You can carry them inside, so learn how to find a section fast instead of memorising it.
- Start with the 30-mark trio. Constitutional Law, CrPC, and CPC give you the biggest return for your study hours.
- Solve previous year papers. AIBE repeats question patterns, and around 20 to 30 questions echo earlier editions.
- Practise OMR marking. Many students lose marks by bubbling the wrong row under time pressure.
- Tab your bare acts. Plain sticky tabs with section numbers are allowed and save you several minutes.
- Attempt every question. There is no negative marking, so a blank answer is a wasted mark.
AIBE 22 Three-Month Study Plan
| Period | Focus Area |
|---|---|
| September 2026 | Constitutional Law, CrPC, CPC, and IPC (38 marks) |
| October 2026 | Evidence Act, Family Law, Contract and Property Law, Tort (29 marks) |
| Early November 2026 | Professional Ethics, ADR, PIL, Labour Law, Taxation (20 marks) |
| Mid November 2026 | Company, Environmental, Cyber, Land Acquisition, IPR, Administrative Law (13 marks) |
| Last 10 Days | Full mock tests, bare act tabbing, and revision |
You should take at least five full-length mock tests before the exam. Use the AIBE mock test series and past AIBE question papers to build speed.

AIBE 22 Best Books and Bare Acts
Your AIBE 22 preparation depends more on bare acts than on thick reference books. You carry the bare acts into the hall, so they double as your study material and your exam aid.
Buy plain bare acts published by standard legal publishers. Annotated editions with case notes and commentary are not allowed inside the AIBE 22 exam hall.
| Subject | What to Study | Marks Covered |
|---|---|---|
| Constitutional Law | Bare Act of the Constitution of India with schedules | 10 |
| Criminal Procedure | Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita bare act | 10 |
| Civil Procedure | CPC bare act with orders and schedules | 10 |
| Criminal Law | Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita bare act | 8 |
| Evidence Law | Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam bare act | 8 |
| Family Law | Hindu Marriage Act, Hindu Succession Act, Muslim personal law notes | 8 |
| Contract and Property | Indian Contract Act, Transfer of Property Act, NI Act | 8 |
| Professional Ethics | Advocates Act 1961 and BCI Rules Part VI | 4 |
| Other Subjects | Short summary notes for low-weightage subjects | 34 |
How to Tab Your Bare Acts for AIBE 22
- Use plain colour tabs with only section numbers written on them.
- Give one colour per act so you can pick the right book without reading covers.
- Tab the index page of every bare act, since most questions send you to a specific section.
- Do not write case names, notes, or explanations on the tabs, as invigilators can seize such copies.
Note: Professional Ethics questions come mainly from the Advocates Act 1961 and the BCI Rules. Many students skip this 4-mark section and lose easy marks.
Pair your bare acts with the last three years of AIBE question papers to see how BCI frames section-based questions.
