Virus is a small connection of genetic code that is present in the form of RNA and DNA. It is surrounded by a coat of protein known as the capsid. Viruses can't replicate alone; they infect cells and use their components to make copies of themselves. Viruses are submicroscopic which means that they can't be seen under a microscope. They can survive in a living cell only. They are small in size even smaller than bacteria, their size ranges from 20-300 nanometers (nm).
Viruses are classified into different categories of the basics of different categories.
On the basis of the presence of the nucleus
- DNA viruses have DNA as their genetic materials. They can be classified into Single-stranded DNA virus and Double-stranded DNA virus
- RNA Viruses have RNA as their genetic material. These are classified as Single-stranded RNA viruses and Double-stranded RNA viruses.

On the basis of symmetry, we have Helical symmetry virus (Orthomyxovirus), Complex virus (Poxvirus), Cubical symmetry virus (Reovirus), and Spiral shaped virus (Helical). On the basis of the host range, there are animal viruses and plant viruses.
