Class 11 Chemistry Chapter 13 Hydrocarbons – Important Topics
Hydrocarbons are organic compounds which are made of carbon and hydrogen. They can be divided into:
- Aliphatic Hydrocarbon
- Aromatic Hydrocarbon
Aliphatic Hydrocarbon: Organic compounds having carbon and hydrogen linked together in straight chains such compounds are known as aliphatic compounds or aliphatic hydrocarbons. Aliphatic hydrocarbons have been divided into two categories: saturated and unsaturated.
Aromatic Hydrocarbon: Aromatic hydrocarbon consists of benzene [C6H6] which is carbon and hydrogen linked together in a loop structure. These are sweet smelling organic compounds.
Properties of Hydrocarbon:
- Hydrocarbons are colourless in nature.
- The number of carbon atoms in a hydrocarbon determines its boiling point.
- Hydrocarbons are nonpolar which means they are insoluble in water.
- Hydrocarbons undergo Substitution, Addition and Combustion reaction.
