Class 7 Science Chapter 2 Nutrition in Animals: Important Topics

Nutrition is the process of obtaining food and then using it for obtaining energy, growth, and repair of the body. There are five main processes concerned with the use of food by animals. As we know Plants produce their own food with the help of photosynthesis. But animals are heterotrophs and hence they depend on other organisms for their food. 

  • Different Ways of Taking Food

Animal nutrition includes the nutrient requirements, the mode of food intake, as well as the utilization of food in the body. The intake of food is called ingestion. 

The different ways of taking food by the organisms:

  • Humming Bird → Nectar → Sucking
  • Human Beings → Fruits, Vegetables → Mouth (Chewing and Swallowing)
  • Snakes → Rats → Swallowing
  • Frogs → Insects → Swallowing (Sticky Tongue)
  • Earthworm → Decaying Matter → Swallowing (Muscular Pharynx)
  • Spiders → Insects → Grinding
  • Amoeba → Tiny Food Particles → Engulfing (Pseudopodia)

The digestive system of the human body is composed of a group of organs working together to convert food into energy for the body. The digestive system, anatomically, is made up of the gastrointestinal tract, along with accessory organs like the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. Digestion in humans involves the intake of food by an organism and its utilization for energy. This is a vital process that helps living beings to obtain their energy from various sources. 

  • Digestion in Grass-Eating Animals

The grass-eating animals have cellulose-digesting bacteria present in their stomach helping to digest cellulose. They quickly swallow the grass and store it in the rumen, where the food gets partially digested and is termed cud. Moreover, the cud returns to the mouth in small lumps and the animal chews it.
