Relative Frequency shows the proportion of the specific events that occurred over the total number of events. It can be used to compare samples of different sizes directly. In statistics, a relative frequency table shows the popularity of a certain type of data based on the population sampled. It is presented in percentage, proportion and decimal form.

What is Relative Frequency?

Relative frequency or the empirical probability of an event is the number of outcomes in which a specified event occurs within the total number of trials in an actual experiment. It is not used in a theoretical sample space. The proportions are calculated from experience or observation.

Relative frequency is the ratio of observed frequency over total frequency for any randomly conducted experiment. To calculate relative frequency we need: 

  • Frequency count for the total population 
  • Frequency count for a subgroup of the population

Relative Frequency = Subgroup frequency/ Total frequency 

Or 

Relative Frequency = f/ n 

Here, 

  • f = number of times the event occurred in an observation 
  • n = total number of frequencies 

Example: Rahul has won 8 games out of 10 games played. Calculate the winning frequency: 

Step 1: Divide the given frequency f i.e., 8 by the total n, i.e.,10. 

Step 2: You get 8/10 or 4/5. Convert it into a percentage. 

The answer is 20% 

Hence, the winning frequency is 20%. 

Many relative frequencies can be calculated from the same experiment. And the sum of all frequencies should be equal to 1 or 100% 

Example: In a game of chess, you win 6 out of 10 times. The relative frequency of your: 

  1. Victory is 6/10 or 60% 
  2. Defeat (10-6) is 4/10 or 40% 

When you add both the frequencies you’ll get 6/10+4/10 = 10/10 

i.e., 1

Cumulative relative frequency of a variable is the sum of all the previous relative frequencies occurring for that variable. The last value obtained is equal to the sum of all relative frequencies. It shows the relationship of the events with each other in a tabular form. 

For instance, Count the number of times digits- 2,4,6,8 occurs in the following set: 

{2, 2, 2, 2, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 8, 8, 8}

Here, the cumulative relative frequency of each count is calculated by adding the relative frequency of it with the relative frequencies of the preceding counts.

Sample Questions 

Ques: A die is tossed 50 times and lands 5 times on the number 2. What is the relative frequency of observing the die land on the number 2? (3 marks)

Ans: Number of times the die is tossed = 50 

Number of positive frequency = 5 

Relative frequency = Number of positive frequency/Total Number of frequency f = 5/50 = 10% 

Hence, the relative frequency of observing the die land on the number 2 is 10%

Ques: A coin is tossed 20 times and lands 15 times on tails. What is the relative frequency of observing the coin land on tails? (3 marks)

Ans: Total number of trials = 20 

Number of times coin landed on tails = 15 

Relative frequency = Number of times the event occurred in an observation/Total Number of trials f = 15/20 or 75% 

Hence, the relative frequency of observing the coin land on tails is 75% 

Ques: Two dice are rolled simultaneously. Find the relative frequency of: (3 marks)
1.Occurrence of a doublet 
2.Occurrence of 8 as the sum of numbers on both the dice 

Ans: On rolling two dice simultaneously, we have the sample space as below: { 1,1 1,2 1,3 1,4 1,5 1,6 

2,1 2,2 2,3 2,4 2,5 2,6 

3,1 3,2 3,3 3,4 3,5 3,6 

4,1 4,2 4,3 4,4 4,5 4,6

The total number of observations is 36. 

Relative frequency = Number of times the event occurred in an observation/Total Number of trials 

  1. The doublets occur six times (1,1 2,2 3,3 4,4 5,5 6,6). So the relative frequency will be 6/36 or 16.66% 
  2. 8 occurs as the sum in the following 3 cases: (2,6 3,5 4,4 5,3 6,2 ). 

Hence, the relative frequency of obtaining 8 as the sum of the numbers on both the dice will be 5/36 or 13.88% 

Ques: Helen wanted to know if her coin was biased or not. She flipped in 25 times and got heads 15 times. Calculate the relative frequencies for the occurrence of heads and tails. (3 marks)

Ans: The total number of times head appeared = 15 

Therefore, the tail appears 10 times. 

Relative frequency = Number of times the event occurred in an observation/ Total Number of trials.

Hence, the relative frequency for the occurrence of 

Heads = 15/25 or 60% 

Tails = 10/25 or 40% 

Ques: A coin is flipped 50 times, the coin lands on heads 24 times. Calculate the relative frequency of the coin landing on tails? (2 marks)

Ans: Number of times coin landing on heads = 24 

Therefore, number of times coin landing on tails = 50 - 24 = 26 times 

Relative frequency = number of times an event has occurred / number of trials Hence, the relative frequency of the coin landing on tails = 26/50 = 52% 

Ques: Meena has a bag containing 20 balls. Her favourite balls are yellow and red. The table below shows the frequency of each different ball selected as she picked all 20 balls one by one. (2 marks)
