Soda lime is basically a kind of crystalline solid that is made from the calcium hydroxide and sodium or potassium Hydroxide. It is white or greyish white in colour. It is incombustible and mixable in nature. When mixed with water lime soda releases heat. In normal state soda lime absorbs the CO2 and deteriorates quickly. It reacts with both-tissues and metals. Therefore, it can do severe damage to our gastronomical tract, which may even cause death. The use of soda lime is unavoidable in medical fields as well. As mentioned earlier soda lime absorb CO2 hence it is used in Basil metabolism taste and anaesthetic procedures.

Soda lime is a unique chemical which is created by the combination of NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide) and CaO (Calcium Oxide). It is generally used in granular form. Soda lime is a great CO2 absorbent; hence, it can be essentially used in medical field- especially in anaesthetic procedure. Soda lime is actually the common name of Sodium Calcium Hydrate, and can represent as- CaHNaO2

There are four main components of soda lime-

  1. Calcium Oxide, CaO (about 75%)
  2. Water, H2O (about 20%)
  3. Sodium Hydroxide, NaOH (about 3%)
  4. Potassium Hydroxide, KOH (about 1%)

Formula and Equation of Soda Lime

Soda lime can also be considered as the soft drink lime. And we know, soft drink in basically a combination of synthetic compounds, those are-

Ca(OH)2 – 75%

H2O – 20%

NaOH - 5%

It usually takes 1-2 hours for interaction.

We will discuss the equations related to soda lime in phase by phase.

As mentioned earlier, soda lime is a great absorbent of CO2, this part of reaction can be formulated as-

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 = CaCO3 + H2O

Incidentally, this reaction takes time, therefore, to accelerate this it is required to add NaOH as a catalyst in this reaction. So, initially the formulation is-

CO+ NaOH= NaHCO3

At the next phase, this NaHCO3 reacts further.

NaHCO3 + Ca(OH)2 = CaCO+ H2O + NaOH

Which is basically-

Baking soda+ slaked lime = Limestone + Water + Caustic Soda

The water we get from this equation, helps progressing the reaction further.

Even a small amount of this vapour can damage our respiratory system.

Ans. Soda lime and soda lime glass are completely two different elements. Soda lime is a chemical, whereas the soda lime glass is a glass that is being used in making glass bottles and windows. We know that, soda lime is highly reactive and hence unstable, but the soda lime glass is more stable.

Ans. The differences between the cold lime soda process and the hot lime soda process are-

  1. Cold lime soda process can be done in the room temperature, whereas, the hot lime soda process needs a higher temperature of 100oC.
  2. The reaction rate for cold lime Soda process is moderate. But the reaction rate for hot lime soda process is quick.
  3. In the case of cold lime process, the gases that are dissolved, do not need to be eliminated but in the case of hot lime soda process, the dissolved gases are eliminated.
  4. The filtration process for cold lime soda process is difficult whereas it is easier and faster in the case of hot lime soda process.
