Class 11 Chemistry Chapter 10 s Block Elements – Important Topics

Group 1 (Alkali metals) and Group 2 (Alkali Earth metals) of the periodic table are called s Block elements. They are strongly electropositive.

  • Alkali metals are where the valence s orbital consists of only one electron.
  • Alkali earth metals are where the valence s orbital consists of two electrons.

Properties of s block elements include:

  • Low atomic and ionic size
  • Greater charge density (charge/volume of the atom)
  • Greater polarization
  • Absence of d-orbitals.
  • The density of the alkali metals increases down the group in the S-block elements.
  • The alkali metals possess a low melting and boiling point because of the weak metallic bonding.
  • A diagonal relationship in the S-block elements can be pointed out between adjacent elements which are present in the second and third period of the periodic table.
