SOFT CET 2027 (School of Fashion Technology Common Entrance Test) is conducted by MKSSS’s School of Fashion Technology (SOFT), Pune, for admission to B.Des and M.Des programs in fashion design and related disciplines. SOFT is affiliated with SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai, and holds NAAC-A accreditation — making it one of Maharashtra’s most reputed design institutes. The exam is held twice a year — I CET in January and II CET in June — giving you two chances to secure a seat for the academic session starting July 2027.
- SOFT CET I CET 2027 Notification: Expected in October/November 2026 — in the 2026 cycle, the I CET notification was released in November 2025 ahead of the January 9–10, 2026 exam.
- SOFT CET I CET 2027 Exam: Expected in January 2027 over two days — Day 1 is an online CBT (Stage 1 GAT, 150 minutes) and Day 2 is the offline Studio Test and Personal Interview at SOFT’s Pune campus. In 2026, I CET was held on January 9–10.
- SOFT CET II CET 2027 Registration: Expected to open in March 2027 — in both 2025 and 2026, II CET registration opened on March 1 and closed on May 30 (with late fee of INR 500 extra).
- SOFT CET II CET 2027 Exam: Expected around June 6–7, 2027 — in both 2025 and 2026, the II CET was consistently held on June 6–7, with the merit list declared within 5 days of the exam.
What is SOFT CET 2027?
SOFT CET is an institute-level entrance exam conducted by MKSSS’s School of Fashion Technology (SOFT), Pune, for admission to its B.Des and M.Des programs. SOFT was established in 1998 and is affiliated with SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai. It is accredited with NAAC-A grade and recognized by UGC under Sections 2(f) and 12(B). The institute has campuses in Pune (Narhe) and Nagpur.
SOFT CET is one of the few fashion design entrance exams in India that is held twice a year. The I CET is conducted in January and the II CET in June. Both are for admission to the same academic year that starts in July. This two-window structure means that if you miss the January exam or want to improve your rank, you can attempt the June CET for the same seat pool.
The exam tests you across three compulsory stages: a written General Ability Test (GAT), a hands-on Studio Test, and a Personal Interview with portfolio presentation. Your final merit rank combines your SOFT CET performance with your Class 12 marks in a 50:50 ratio. So both your entrance test score and your board exam percentage decide where you stand in the merit list.

SOFT CET 2027 Exam Pattern
SOFT CET 2027 has a three-stage exam structure conducted over two consecutive days. All three stages are compulsory — missing any stage means you will not be considered for the merit list. The most important thing to understand about the SOFT CET pattern is that Stage 2 (Studio Test) carries 140 of the 250 total marks, making creative ability the single biggest factor in your score.
| Stage | Component | Marks | Duration | Mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | General Ability Test (GAT) | 60 | 150 minutes | Online CBT (Day 1) |
| Stage 2 | Studio Test | 140 | 75 minutes | Offline at SOFT Campus, Pune (Day 2) |
| Stage 3 | Personal Interview + Portfolio + SOP | 50 | Scheduled by SOFT | In-person at SOFT Campus, Pune (Day 2) |
| Total | — | 250 | — | — |
Stage 1: General Ability Test (GAT)
Stage 1 is a 60-question online MCQ test worth 60 marks. You get 150 minutes (2.5 hours) to complete it. The test is held in online CBT mode on Day 1. There is no negative marking, so you should attempt all 60 questions.
The GAT has four sections of 15 questions each, all carrying equal marks:
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Aptitude | 15 | 15 |
| Verbal / Non-Verbal Reasoning | 15 | 15 |
| Analytical Ability | 15 | 15 |
| Creative Ability | 15 | 15 |
| Total | 60 | 60 |
Stage 2: Studio Test
Stage 2 is an offline creative test held at SOFT’s Pune campus on Day 2. You get 75 minutes to complete a design brief given on the spot. This tests your freehand drawing ability, color work, observational skills, and design thinking. It carries 140 marks — 56% of your total SOFT CET score. Students with a strong art and design background have a clear advantage here, which is why consistent drawing practice in the months before the exam is essential.
You need to travel to SOFT’s Pune campus for Stage 2. Plan your travel and accommodation accordingly if you are coming from outside Pune.
Stage 3: Personal Interview, Portfolio, and SOP
Stage 3 is held on the same day as Stage 2 (Day 2) at SOFT’s campus. You present your portfolio of creative work and a Statement of Purpose (SOP) to an interview panel. The panel evaluates your passion for design, creative potential, communication skills, and alignment with the program you have applied to. Stage 3 carries 50 marks.
Your SOP should explain why you want to study design at SOFT, what drives your creative interest, and what you hope to achieve after graduation. Keep it focused, honest, and specific to the specialization you are applying for.
SOFT CET 2027 Syllabus
SOFT does not release a formal published syllabus document for SOFT CET 2027. However, the institute sends sample question papers for Stage 1 (GAT) to registered candidates by email after successful application. The broad topic areas for each section are based on previous exam patterns and are listed below.
Stage 1 Syllabus: Quantitative Aptitude

- Design-based Visual Thinking
- Creating New Designs and Illustrations
- Rule Detection in Visual Patterns
- Construction of Squares and Triangles
- Inserting the Missing Character in a Pattern
Stage 2: Studio Test
There is no fixed syllabus for the Studio Test. SOFT gives a design brief to all candidates at the start of Stage 2. Past studio tasks have included drawing products from observation, creating a fashion-themed layout, illustrating a given concept using mixed media, or re-designing an everyday object.
The skills the Studio Test evaluates are:
- Freehand sketching accuracy and confidence
- Color usage and composition
- Creative thinking under time pressure (75 minutes)
- Understanding of core design principles — balance, proportion, contrast, and emphasis
- Ability to communicate a visual idea clearly on paper
You should keep a sketchbook and draw from real objects and fashion references every day. Working within a 75-minute time limit regularly will help you manage time in the actual Studio Test.
Stage 3: Portfolio and Personal Interview
Stage 3 has no fixed syllabus. The interview panel focuses on your creative portfolio, your SOP, and your motivation for choosing fashion or design as a career. Common topics include your design influences, your favorite designers, how you approach a design brief, and your awareness of current trends in the fashion industry.
Make sure every piece in your portfolio is original work. Be ready to explain the concept and process behind each piece — the panel may ask questions about specific works in your folder.
SOFT CET 2027 Admit Card

SOFT CET 2027 Result and Merit List
The SOFT CET 2027 result is published as a merit rank list on the official website. For I CET 2027, the merit list is expected in February 2027. For II CET 2027, based on the consistent pattern from 2025 and 2026, expect the merit list around June 11–12, 2027 — within 5 days of the exam.
How SOFT CET Merit Rank is Calculated
Your final merit rank uses a 50:50 formula combining two components:
- 50% weightage — SOFT CET score: Your combined total across all three stages (out of 250)
- 50% weightage — Class 12 percentage: Your aggregate marks in the qualifying board exam
This means that your board exam performance has as much impact on your merit rank as your CET performance. A strong Stage 2 score in the CET can be offset by a lower Class 12 percentage, and vice versa. You must perform well in both to get a high merit rank.
How to Check SOFT CET 2027 Merit List
- Visit soft.ac.in or softcet.in
- Look for the "Result" or "Merit List" link published after the exam
- The list shows your rank and whether you have been selected in Round 1
- If seats remain unfilled after the 1st merit list, SOFT releases a 2nd merit list
If you are on the 1st merit list, you must send a confirmation email to the institute within the specified deadline (usually 3–5 days after the merit list is released). Missing this step means your seat is automatically offered to the next candidate on the waitlist. This step is critical — act as soon as the merit list is published.
In 2025, SOFT released a 2nd merit list for the B.Des Fashion Design program after the January I CET, which shows that waitlisted candidates do get real opportunities if shortlisted candidates do not confirm on time.
SOFT CET 2027 Cutoff and Selection Criteria
SOFT does not publish official course-wise cutoff scores or closing merit ranks for SOFT CET. Admission is strictly merit-based using the combined score formula described below. There are no category-wise reservations or quota details publicly available from SOFT.
SOFT CET 2027 Selection Formula
| Component | Weightage |
|---|---|
| SOFT CET Score (Stages 1 + 2 + 3, out of 250) | 50% |
| Class 12 / Qualifying Exam Marks | 50% |
| Final Merit Score (used for rank) | 100% |
For lateral entry (B.Des 2nd year), the formula is the same: 50% CET score + 50% diploma academic record.
What the Absence of Official Cutoffs Means for You
Since SOFT does not disclose historical cutoff data, there is no publicly available benchmark score to target. The practical implication is that you must aim to maximize performance in all three stages. Stage 2 (Studio Test) carries 140 of the 250 CET marks — more than double Stage 1’s 60 marks — so your hands-on creative ability directly drives the largest part of your score.
SOFT Pune has a total intake of around 385 students across all B.Des and M.Des programs on the Pune campus. Fashion Design alone has 120 seats and is the most popular specialization. This means competition for top programs is significant.
If you are not selected in the 1st merit list, check for the 2nd merit list. SOFT releases additional lists when seats remain unfilled after each selection round. If you miss both merit lists for I CET, you can re-apply for II CET (June 2027) for the remaining seats in the same academic year.
SOFT CET 2027 Counselling and Admission Process
SOFT CET counselling is handled directly by MKSSS’s School of Fashion Technology — there is no centralized state-level or national counselling authority involved. The process is simple but time-sensitive. You must complete every step within the given deadlines or you will lose your seat to the next candidate on the merit list.
Step-by-Step SOFT CET 2027 Admission Process
- Step 1 — Appear in all 3 Stages: You must participate in the GAT (Stage 1), Studio Test (Stage 2), and Personal Interview with portfolio (Stage 3). All three stages are compulsory — skipping even one means you will not appear on the merit list.
- Step 2 — Check the Merit List: Once the merit list is published on the official website, check your rank and the course or specialization you have been provisionally allotted.
- Step 3 — Send Confirmation Email: If you are selected in Round 1, you must send a confirmation email to the institute within the deadline — typically 3–5 days after the merit list. Not sending this email forfeits your seat automatically.
- Step 4 — Pay the Seat Confirmation Fee: Pay the seat confirmation fee online within the deadline. In 2026, the fee payment deadline for II CET candidates was June 30, and the admission confirmation deadline was July 5.
- Step 5 — Report to Campus with Documents: Visit SOFT’s campus for final document verification and admission confirmation. The 2026 academic session started on July 8 for both Pune and Nagpur campuses. For 2027, expect a similar July start date.
Documents Required for Final Admission at SOFT 2027
- Class 10 marksheet and passing certificate
- Class 12 marksheet and passing certificate (final)
- Transfer certificate (TC) from your previous institution
- Migration certificate (if required by SNDT Women’s University)
- Passport-size photographs — at least 4–6 copies
- Valid government-issued photo ID
- Caste or category certificate (if applicable)
Nagpur Campus Admissions
SOFT also runs programs from its Nagpur campus. If seats are available at Nagpur after the Pune rounds are complete, candidates may be offered Nagpur campus seats. Check your merit list allotment letter carefully to see which campus you have been assigned to, and confirm that you are comfortable with the location before paying the seat confirmation fee.
All admissions at SOFT are governed by SNDT Women’s University rules and regulations. Final admission is confirmed only after physical document verification at the campus. Candidates are advised to carry originals and attested photocopies of all documents.

Preparation Tips for SOFT CET 2027
SOFT CET 2027 tests both written aptitude and hands-on creative skill. Since Stage 2 (Studio Test) carries 140 of 250 marks and Stage 3 (PI + Portfolio) adds another 50, creative preparation outweighs written test preparation in terms of direct score impact. A strong Stage 1 score helps, but it cannot compensate for a weak Studio Test performance.
How to Prepare for Stage 1 (GAT)
- Practice MCQs daily: Solve 30–40 aptitude and reasoning questions every day. Standard books like RS Aggarwal’s Quantitative Aptitude and RS Aggarwal’s Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning are good resources for Stage 1.
- Focus on Non-Verbal Reasoning: Mirror images, figure series, paper folding, and pattern recognition questions need visual thinking. These topics also overlap with the creative thinking used in Stage 2, so practicing them has a double benefit.
- Work on time management: Stage 1 gives you 150 minutes for 60 questions — 2.5 minutes per question. Timed mock sessions will help you maintain speed without sacrificing accuracy.
- Use SOFT’s own sample papers: After you register, SOFT sends GAT sample question papers by email. These are the most accurate guide to the question style. Register early and use them as your primary practice material.
How to Prepare for Stage 2 (Studio Test)
- Draw every single day: Freehand drawing ability builds over months of daily practice. Sketch at least one object, figure, or scene from observation every day. Include fashion sketches, product drawings, still life, and architectural forms for variety.
- Practice with color: Use color pencils, sketch pens, watercolors, and markers. Learn basic color theory — primary, secondary, and complementary colors, and how to create harmony in a composition.
- Understand design principles: Study balance, proportion, rhythm, contrast, and emphasis. These principles are the foundation of any good design composition and will help you structure your Studio Test answer confidently.
- Practice under time pressure: The Studio Test lasts exactly 75 minutes. Set a timer and complete full design tasks within 75 minutes regularly. Being comfortable with the time constraint on the actual exam day is a major advantage.
- Build visual vocabulary: Follow fashion magazines, design blogs, and global lookbooks. Study layouts, color use, and composition in professional design work. The more visual references you have, the more creative your Studio Test response can be.
How to Prepare for Stage 3 (Portfolio and PI)
- Curate your portfolio carefully: Include 15–20 of your best original works. Show range — freehand sketches, design concepts, color compositions, collages, and completed projects. Quality is more important than quantity.
- Write a strong, specific SOP: Your Statement of Purpose should be specific to SOFT and to your chosen specialization. Explain your design background, your creative influences, and your goals after graduation. Two to three well-written paragraphs are better than a long generic essay.
- Know your own work: The interview panel may ask about any piece in your portfolio. Be ready to explain your concept, your process, and what you were trying to achieve. Speak confidently about your own creative choices.
- Prepare for common PI questions: "Why SOFT?", "Which designers inspire you?", "How do you approach a design problem?", "What do you see yourself doing in five years?" — prepare genuine, specific answers rather than generic ones.
If you are targeting I CET 2027 (January), begin your preparation by October/November 2026 — as soon as the notification is released. If you are targeting II CET 2027 (June), start by January 2027 at the latest. Earlier preparation always gives you more time to build your portfolio and improve your drawing skills.
FAQs
Ques. What is SOFT CET 2027?
Ans. SOFT CET 2027 is the School of Fashion Technology Common Entrance Test conducted by MKSSS’s School of Fashion Technology (SOFT), Pune, for admission to B.Des and M.Des programs for the academic year starting July 2027. The exam is held twice — I CET in January 2027 and II CET in June 2027 — giving you two chances to qualify for the same set of seats.
Ques. Is SOFT CET 2027 conducted twice a year?
Ans. Yes. SOFT CET is one of the very few fashion design entrance exams in India held twice annually. I CET is in January and II CET is in June. Both are for the same academic year starting July. If you miss I CET or want to improve your result, you can appear for II CET. Historical data from 2025 and 2026 confirms SOFT holds both cycles consistently in the same months every year.
Ques. What is the eligibility criteria for SOFT CET 2027?
Ans. For B.Des programs, you need to have passed Class 10+2 from any stream (Arts, Commerce, Science, MCVC, or NIOS) with at least 50% aggregate marks. Students appearing in Class 12 exams can also apply. Diploma holders after Class 10 are eligible for both 1st year and lateral (2nd year) B.Des entry. For M.Des, you need a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognized university.
Ques. What is the SOFT CET 2027 exam pattern?
Ans. SOFT CET has three compulsory stages over two days. Stage 1 is a 60-question online MCQ-based General Ability Test (GAT) worth 60 marks over 150 minutes — no negative marking. Stage 2 is an offline Studio Test worth 140 marks over 75 minutes at SOFT’s Pune campus. Stage 3 is a Personal Interview with portfolio and SOP, worth 50 marks. Total marks: 250.
Ques. How many seats are there in SOFT CET 2027?
Ans. SOFT Pune has a total seat intake of approximately 385 students across all programs. B.Des in Fashion Design has 120 seats — the largest single program. The M.Des program has 30 seats. Additional seats are available at the Nagpur campus. Specialization-wise seat counts for other B.Des programs will be confirmed in the official 2027 notification at soft.ac.in.
Ques. What is the SOFT CET application fee for 2027?
Ans. The SOFT CET 2027 application fee is INR 4,000 per application. This fee is non-refundable. If you apply for more than one specialization, you pay a separate INR 4,000 for each application. Late registration carries an additional INR 500. Payment is accepted online only — through credit card, debit card, or internet banking at softcet.in.
Ques. How is the SOFT CET 2027 merit rank calculated?
Ans. Your SOFT CET merit rank is based on a 50:50 formula. Fifty percent of your rank comes from your total SOFT CET score (all three stages combined, out of 250) and the remaining 50% comes from your Class 12 aggregate marks. Both components carry equal weight — a high CET score can be brought down by a low Class 12 percentage, and vice versa.
Ques. Is there negative marking in SOFT CET?
Ans. No. Stage 1 (GAT) has no negative marking. You get +1 mark for every correct answer and zero for a wrong or unattempted answer. This means you should attempt all 60 questions in Stage 1 without any concern about losing marks. Stages 2 and 3 are evaluated by an assessor panel and are not MCQ-based.
Ques. What should I include in my portfolio for SOFT CET 2027?

Ques. When will SOFT CET I CET 2027 notification be released?
Ans. The SOFT CET I CET 2027 notification is expected in October/November 2026. In previous years, the I CET notification was released 2–3 months before the January exam date. Official dates will be published on softcet.in and soft.ac.in once announced. Check both websites regularly from October 2026 onwards for the notification.
Ques. What if I am not selected in the 1st merit list of SOFT CET 2027?
Ans. If you are not in the 1st merit list, wait for the 2nd merit list. SOFT releases additional lists when seats remain unfilled after each selection round — this happened for the B.Des Fashion Design program in the January 2025 I CET cycle. If both lists of I CET 2027 do not result in a seat, you can re-apply for II CET 2027 (June 2027) where remaining seats for the same academic year are filled afresh.
The information in this article is based on data from official sources and education portals as of September 2026. SOFT CET 2027 official dates and details have not yet been announced and are projected based on 2025 and 2026 cycle patterns. Candidates are advised to check the official websites at softcet.in and soft.ac.in for the latest and most accurate information before applying.
