BHU Admission Process

BHU uses separate admission routes for different programme families. CUET UG is the primary route for arts, science, commerce, and law UG programmes. NEET UG through MCC governs all MBBS and BDS seats. MBA admission uses CAT followed by a Group Discussion and Personal Interview at Varanasi.

UG Admission (BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BALLB)

All mainstream UG admissions at BHU require a valid CUET UG 2026 score. Candidates register on the BHU CAP-UG portal at bhucuet.samarth.edu.in after CUET results. Class 12 percentage carries zero weight in merit and is used only as a tiebreaker. Key points for UG applicants:

  • Candidates must appear in CUET UG domain papers matching their chosen programme at BHU
  • BHU BALLB Hons uses CUET UG, not CLAT. Aspirants must apply through the BHU CAP-UG portal
  • Commitment fee on accepting allotment: INR 2,500 for General, OBC, and EWS and INR 500 for SC, ST, and PwD
  • Central government reservation norms apply across all UG programmes

Round 1 allotment was declared August 1, 2026. Further rounds are in progress. BHU does not offer a management quota. All seats are merit-based.

MBBS and BDS Admission (IMS BHU)

IMS BHU offers 100 MBBS and 63 BDS seats. As a central university, all seats including the institutional quota are allocated through MCC counselling at mcc.nic.in. State NEET counselling by UP does not cover BHU IMS seats. Eligibility requires Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and a valid NEET UG 2026 score. Minimum aggregate in PCB is 50% for General and EWS and 40% for SC, ST, and OBC-NCL. The NEET UG closing rank for BHU MBBS General Category has historically been in the top 20,000 to 30,000 range, given the strong demand for this centrally-funded seat.

MBA Admission

BHU’s Institute of Management Studies offers 136 total MBA seats (118 regular, 18 paid) across MBA and MBA (International Business). Admission uses a composite score: CAT (50%), Academic Record (20%), Group Discussion (15%), and Personal Interview (15%). Graduation with minimum 50% marks is required for General and EWS candidates (45% for SC and ST). GD and PI are conducted offline at the Varanasi campus. For the 2026-28 batch, admissions ran on the CAT 2025 cycle with GD-PI in March 2026.

PG Admission (MA, M.Sc, M.Com, LLM)

PG admissions use CUET PG scores for most programmes. Life sciences M.Sc programmes use GAT-B score. After results, candidates register on the BHU PG portal at admission.bhu.ac.in. CUET PG spot rounds are ongoing as of August 2026.

BHU Placements and Career Outcomes

BHU placement outcomes vary significantly across its faculties and programmes. As per NIRF 2025 data, 626 UG and 1,341 PG students were placed in the latest reported cycle. The median package for UG (4-year) graduates was INR 9 LPA and for PG (2-year) graduates was INR 9 LPA. PG (3-year) programme graduates, which include medical postgraduates, recorded a median of INR 13.5 LPA.

The BHU MBA programme at the Institute of Management Studies places students in banking, finance, FMCG, and consulting roles. Recruiters for the MBA programme include public sector banks, insurance companies, and mid-size corporates. IMS BHU MBBS graduates pursue NEET PG for MD/MS admissions. Government service and private hospital appointments are the two primary career pathways. The IMS BHU internship stipend follows central government norms. Faculty of Law graduates appear in judicial services, civil services, and the bar in Varanasi and Allahabad High Court jurisdictions.

BHU Campus and Infrastructure

BHU’s main campus in Varanasi spans over 1,300 acres, making it one of the largest university campuses in Asia. The campus is a self-contained township with academic departments, hostels, a hospital, temples, markets, sports facilities, and residential quarters. The campus is situated along the banks of the Ganga in the heart of Varanasi.

The Sir Sunder Lal Hospital attached to IMS BHU is a major teaching hospital with over 2,000 beds and operates as a tertiary care centre for eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The Faculty of Performing Arts (BHU) has dedicated music, dance, and theatre spaces. The BHU library system includes a central library and faculty-level reading rooms. Residential hostels on campus accommodate thousands of students and are operated by the university. Hostel allocation follows merit and proximity criteria.

The campus is accessible from the Varanasi Junction railway station and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport. The BHU gate at Lanka on the Grand Trunk Road is the main entry point. The campus includes playgrounds, an indoor sports complex, and facilities for cricket, football, and athletics. Annual cultural events including BHU’s tech and cultural fests draw national participation from universities across India.

BHU vs Delhi University vs AMU

For aspirants choosing between major central universities with broad programme portfolios in arts, sciences, commerce, law, and medicine, Banaras Hindu University, Delhi University, and Aligarh Muslim University are frequently compared options. All three are UGC-recognised central universities using CUET for mainstream UG admission.

BHU offers a fully residential campus experience with strength across arts, science, agriculture, and medicine on a single large campus. DU provides access to Delhi’s urban and professional ecosystem with the widest UG programme portfolio in India, plus FMS Delhi for MBA. AMU offers a comparable residential central university experience with STEM and humanities strength in western UP. A candidate choosing between them should weigh campus lifestyle (residential vs urban), programme depth, and location relative to home state.

BHU FAQs

Ques. Is CUET mandatory for BHU UG admission 2026?

Ans. Yes. All mainstream UG admissions at BHU including BA Hons, B.Sc Hons, B.Com, BALLB Hons, and Agriculture use CUET UG 2026 scores. Candidates must also separately register on the BHU CAP-UG portal at bhucuet.samarth.edu.in after CUET results. Class 12 marks carry zero weight in the merit list.

Ques. Does BHU use CLAT for law admission?

Ans. No. BHU BALLB Hons is included in the CUET UG process, not CLAT. Aspirants for BHU law programmes must appear in CUET UG and register on the BHU CAP-UG portal. CLAT registration is not required or relevant for BHU law admission.

Ques. How do I get MBBS admission at BHU IMS?

Ans. IMS BHU offers 100 MBBS seats. All seats are allocated through MCC counselling at mcc.nic.in based on NEET UG rank. Register for MCC counselling, fill BHU IMS in choice filling, and report with original documents if allotted. Do not apply through UP state NEET counselling for BHU IMS seats - those seats are under MCC only.

Ques. What is the BHU NIRF ranking 2025?

Ans. As per NIRF Rankings 2025, BHU is ranked 10th in the Overall category in India. In specific categories, IMS BHU is ranked 6th in the Medical category and the Faculty of Agriculture is ranked 4th in the Agriculture category.

Ques. What is the total MBBS fee at BHU IMS?

Ans. The total MBBS fee at BHU IMS for the 5.5-year programme is INR 1,68,695 under the central university fee structure. This is among the lowest MBBS fees for any institute in India, given the heavy central government subsidy. A strong NEET UG rank is the only route to a seat here.

Ques. What is the BHU MBA admission process?

Ans. BHU MBA admission uses CAT score (50%), Academic Record (20%), Group Discussion (15%), and Personal Interview (15%). Total intake is 136 seats across MBA and MBA (International Business). GD and PI are conducted offline at the Varanasi campus in March. Graduation with minimum 50% marks is required for General and EWS candidates. The next cycle runs on CAT 2026.

Ques. Is BHU a residential university?

Ans. Yes. BHU is a fully residential university with a 1,300-plus-acre self-contained campus in Varanasi. The campus includes student hostels for men and women, a hospital, markets, sports facilities, and academic departments. Many students live on campus throughout their programme, though hostel allocation is subject to availability.

Which is better BHU or DU?

Siddharth Bansal

BHU (Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi) vs DU (Delhi University) — depends heavily on what you're studying:

BHU advantages: central university, residential campus in Varanasi, strong STEM programs (IIT-BHU for engineering), excellent humanities and social sciences, affordable fees, iconic campus, rich cultural environment.

DU advantages: Delhi location (massive employment market), more recognized for economics, commerce, political science, English literature, journalism. DU college brand (St. Stephens, Hindu, SRCC) carries significant weight for certain careers. better for networking in business/media/government sectors.

by subject:

  • Sciences/research: BHU is genuinely excellent, sometimes better than DU for pure sciences
  • Commerce/Economics/MBA prep: DU (SRCC, Shri Ram) has edge
  • Humanities: roughly equal, different strengths (BHU for Sanskrit/classical; DU for modern humanities)
  • Campus life: BHU wins for residential experience. DU is urban/commuter-heavy

both are among India's finest universities. choice depends on your field and priorities.

Does BHU offer admission only to Hindus?

Pranjal Sapra

For years, there's been a doubt lingering among Indian students. Is BHU for Hindus and AMU for Muslims? Though both universities might include Hindu and Muslim in their names, they welcome students from all walks of life. Candidates belonging to any caste and religion can pursue higher education in BHU.

The university was solely established to promote learning and research generally in Arts and Sciences in all branches and to advance and diffuse such scientific, technical, and professional knowledge, combined with the necessary practical training to promote indigenous industries and to develop the material resources of the country. Moreover, the university also reserves seats for certain minority-category students.

How is the hostel facility in BHU compared to that of KGMU?

Raktim Tarafdar
Nivedita TrivediLives in Varanasi

The hostel facilities of IMS BHU and KGMU are at par with each other with no major differences. Here are the year-wise hostels allotted to students of both colleges

First-year:

  • BHU : First-year students of BHU are allotted the Punarvasu Atreya Hostel. This is the hostel with the best facility wherein students are offered double occupancy rooms. There are some restrictions in the initial months. The mess food in this hostel is decent and it also has a small play area. Other facilities include 24-hour electricity and water supply with free internet wifi.
  • KGMU : KGMU first-year students are allotted the CV hostel that has double occupancy rooms. It has Wi-Fi availability, scenery mess food, and a canteen, but is slightly larger than the Atreus hostel of BHU

So, for the first-year students, KGMU hostel > IMS BHU hostel

Second Year

  • IMS BHU: The second-year students of IMS BHU are allotted the Ruiya hostel which is the most beautiful hostel of IMS BHU. It’s known for its lush greenery and is widely spread in a huge area. The rooms are triple occupancy.
  • KGMU: The second-year students are allotted to the TG hostel which is a multistorey building situated in a colony. Single occupancy rooms are allotted to every student. The only drawback is that it’s quite far away from the main campus.

So for the second year, IMS BHU hostel >KGMU

Third year and Last year:

  • IMS BHU : The third-year students of IMS BHU are allotted the Ruiya annex hostel which is very well furnished with double occupancy rooms. In the last year, students have been allotted the Dhanvantari hostel which has single occupancy rooms.
  • KGMU: The third and last-year students of KGMU are allotted with SP hostel which has double occupancy rooms. If you score good marks in your final year, then you may get a single-room

So for third-year hostels, IMS BHU ~KGMU

Overall, the hostels of both IMS BHU and KGMU are equally good in terms of cleanliness and maintenance.

Which is the better choice for a BA LLB, Jamia, BHU, or AMU?

Rohini Mishra
Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

All three universities - Jamia Millia Islamia, Banaras Hindu University, and Aligarh Muslim University - have reputed law faculties and offer Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB) programs. However, the best choice for you would depend on various factors such as location, fees, curriculum, campus infrastructure, and faculty.

  • Ranking : Based on NIRF Ranking, JMU is the best among the 3 options. JMU Law was ranked 5 out of 30 in India 2023 by NIRF MBA.
  • Location : Jamia is situated in Delhi, the capital of India. The students are exposed to more opportunities in terms of internships and coaching. AMU and BHU don’t offer much exposure because of their poor location.
  • Academics and Campus life: Jamia has a more dynamic and vibrant campus life with a better academic experience.

Overall, Jamia should be your first preference if you want to pursue courses like Mass Communication, Law, or Architecture

Pratham Kumar Gautam
Anika Sinhalives in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India

The paid seats system is a system for students who wanted to get admission to Banaras Hindu University but were unable to secure the qualifying ranks. In such a case, he/she can choose to pay the extra fee which is called the Paid seat system. These seats are available up to 5-10 seats in all courses and are reserved as paid seats. This is for those students who got a good rank but missed the campus seat with a very less difference in index.

Procedure

  • Fill in the paid seat form online or during the counseling process. Paid seats are available both for the main campus and affiliated colleges.
  • Your chances of getting the paid seats to work on the number of available seats and your index rank. For instance, if the cutoff is 280, and your marks are in the range of 270-279 you can secure your admission to the campus.
  • The portal will release the result and you can check it on the concerned day.

Fees structure

Paid seats cost extra fees in addition to the semester fees. For example, if your course fee is Rs. 2000 and your paid seat fee is Rs. 25000 so the total fees for the semester will be INR 27000 but the fees for next semester will be the same as a regular seat.

Banaras Hindu University requires an entrance exam for admission in business-related UG courses, but it does not offer a standalone BBA program, according to reliable sources. Instead, students can apply for related courses like B.Com or Management-focused programs, and admission is done through the CUET-UG exam conducted at the national level. Candidates must meet eligibility criteria and participate in BHU’s counselling process after CUET results for seat allocation.
