IIT Bombay, UN WFP to Improve Food Security, Nutrition, Climate Resilience

New Delhi: As per the latest updates, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) has collaborated with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to improve food security, nutrition, climate resilience, and livelihoods.

Informing about this initiative, Prof. Sachin C. Patwardhan, Dean (R&D) of IIT Bombay said, "The MoU establishes a framework for WFP and IIT Bombay to pool their collective expertise and resources in order to advance and promote technological and programmatic solutions”.

"These solutions will improve existing systems and enable the effective use of evidence in critical areas such as food, nutrition, climate, and livelihoods to benefit those who need it the most”, he further added.

Prof Krishna Rao, Deputy Director, and Prof Anand Rao, Head of the Centre for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas (CTARA), attended the MoU signing event on September 1, 2023, at the IIT Bombay Campus.

The World Food Program (WFP) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay will collaborate to build a comprehensive knowledge management system, according to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This system will entail discovering and evaluating relevant data, doing research, and generating evidence linked to food and nutrition security. They intend to share knowledge, best practices, and insights on nutrition, food security, and sustainable agriculture through multiple venues.

Furthermore, IIT Bombay and WFP intend to develop and implement training and capacity-building programs for government agencies, civil society organisations, and nutrition and food security players.

Beyond that, the cooperation will concentrate on ecosystem development for technology and innovation, in which sustainable technological solutions will be found, developed, and scaled to supplement the government food safety net program.

Elisabeth Faure, World Food Program's Representative and Country Director in India said, "Our initial areas of collaboration will include a micro study to better understand the impact of climate change on food security, nutrition, and livelihoods of vulnerable households in a specific geography in India”.

“We will also rely on qualified senior students from IIT Bombay to assist us in the data quality monitoring work for a massive evaluation of the NITI Aayog, for which WFP will provide technical support”, Elisabeth Faure further added.
