IIT Delhi to Establish New Campus in Abu Dhabi

New Delhi: IIT Delhi is all set to start a new venture by establishing a campus in Abu Dhabi, with degree programs scheduled to commence in 2024. In July of this year, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was formally inked between the Ministry of Education and the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK).

IIT Delhi has not yet disclosed specific details regarding the admission process or tuition fees for this initiative. However, in an email exchange with Dr. Ahmed Sultan Al Shoaibi, the acting executive director of the Higher Education Sector at ADEK, delved into key aspects of this international partnership, including faculty, course offerings, placement procedures, and the rationale behind Abu Dhabi's interest in collaborating with Indian educational institutions.

Considering that Abu Dhabi is already home to esteemed institutions like New York University and INSEAD, there were inquiries regarding the necessity of establishing IIT Delhi in Abu Dhabi.

In response, the Executive Director highlighted that the choice to integrate IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi into the emirate's higher education framework was unequivocal. This decision was rooted in acknowledging the institution's exceptional quality, specialization, profound technical knowledge, and prestigious reputation.

This move further solidifies Abu Dhabi's position as a center for global educational distinction. The academic programs offered by IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi will open avenues for educating and enhancing the skills of future generations, thus actively contributing to the growth of a knowledge-based economy.

Sharing the expected opening date for the campus and support the Abu Dhabi government plans to offer to IIT Delhi, the director revealed that the initiation of academic programs at IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi's temporary campus is scheduled for January 2024.

This campus will house advanced research centers specializing in sustainable energy, climate studies, computing, and data sciences.

As for the director of the IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi campus and the proportion of local hires versus IIT Delhi faculty, the appointment process is currently in progress.

The campus aims to assemble a highly skilled and diverse team, drawing talent from the UAE, India, and various parts of the world to ensure an enriching learning environment for students, the Executive director said.

Providing insights into the admission criteria and answering whether a JEE score is necessary for local students, the Executive director explained that the admission criteria will be collaboratively developed with our partners at IIT Delhi. This process will uphold the institute's rigorous standards while ensuring inclusivity for students from diverse backgrounds.

He also commented on the courses and the contemporary fields like data science and AI as a part of the curriculum, by saying that IIT Delhi, Abu Dhabi is set to offer a comprehensive array of bachelor's, master's, and PhD programs. These include emerging domains like energy and sustainability, artificial intelligence, computer science and engineering, mathematics and computing, as well as various engineering and science disciplines. These course offerings are tailored to meet the specific requirements of priority sectors in the UAE.

Expanding on the strategy for IIT Delhi placements at the Abu Dhabi campus and the Abu Dhabi government's strategy to support student internships, the Executive Director explained that the IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi campus strives to replicate the effective placement procedures established by its parent institution. Simultaneously, it aims to capitalize on its unique strengths.

This includes forging strategic collaborations with prominent UAE and global organizations, bridging the gap between academia and industry, and facilitating enhanced internship prospects for students.

Sharing insights on the safety of international students in Abu Dhabi, the Executive director revealed that Abu Dhabi has achieved recognition as the world's safest city, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit's Safe Cities Index 2021.

In line with this exceptional standing, the students consistently express their contentment with the rigorous health and safety measures integrated into our educational framework.

Furthermore, higher education institutions in Abu Dhabi are mandated to strictly follow top-tier campus safety protocols, deliver comprehensive orientation programs, and furnish support services tailored to the needs of international students.

Together, these initiatives cultivate a secure and inviting environment, both within and beyond the campus, for students pursuing their educational journeys in Abu Dhabi.
