IIT Kharagpur Asks Students And Researchers To Vacate Hostels By June 20, 2020

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has asked all the students and researchers staying in hostels to vacate the space by June 20, 2020.

B.N. Singh, Registrar at IIT Kharagpur said that the institute wants all the students to head back to their hometown and come back when the new semester will start in September 2020.

At present, there are 2,100 students and researchers staying in the campus hostels. 

"Out of the total 12,500 hostel boarders, 5,400 were there when the nationwide lockdown was announced in March. Another 3,000 were transported home last month and around 2,400 are at present staying in the campus," stated B.N Singh

Singh said that the university wants students to spend quality time with their family, as no classes are being conducted in the classrooms.

"Since the academic session 2019-2020 has been closed and all the academic activities will also be completed by June 15, 2020. The normal academic activities are expected to start from September, we request the students (UG. PG, Research Scholars) and the project staff who are staying in the hostels/halls to move to their home now. The mess facilities will be closed from June 20, 2020", added B.N. Singh

He also said that for any pending project work, researchers can always work from home and can also mail it to the faculty. The faculty will always be responsive to the student's needs. This is also done as the hostel service staff needed a break as they have been working at a stretch for months.
