Education ministry released a list of 50 best central universities, nationally. RGU acquired the second rank leaving behind leading varsities as of JNU, Delhi University, Vishva Bharati University, Tezpur University, Aligarh Muslim University, BHU and 50 other central universities. Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) sent a letter to RGU on August 10, 2020, that conveyed awarding it, ‘Excellent status’ for 2019-2020 based on performance parameters set for central universities. Additionally, RGU ranked first among all the universities in the North East of India. RGU received high scores on the parameters that included quality pedagogy and curriculum, diversity of programmes, smooth governance quality, competency of faculty, industry interface and placement, dynamism in research and innovation. As a fact, JNU slipped down to third position scoring 82%. Out of 14 parameters, RGU met targets for student-teacher ratio, outcomes, research publications, patents, utilisation of funds, contribution to local societies, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, village governance and adoption and academic outcomes. Given the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and Protected Area Permit (PAP) restrictions, RGU admission cannot permit foreign students. Due to this, it had zero ranks in foreign student admission criteria. However, talks are on with MHRD to find a suitable solution to this. MHRD Ranking Framework for Central Universities The ranking by MHRD is listed based on annual tripartite MoU by MHRD, UGC and varsity for 2019-2020. University spokesperson said, “The parameters would include number of students admitted annually in UG, PG, PhD and MPhil programmes as well the range of diversity among students, measured in terms of percentage of female students as well as the percentage of students from other states and countries.” “The number of students placed through campus interviews and those qualifying for NET & GATE, among other entrance tests, are also taken into consideration.” Winning Thoughts by RGU Fraternity Prof. Saket Kushwaha, Vice-Chancellor, RGU, congratulated faculty of the university for their relentless efforts in uplifting quality of education and increasing scope for competitiveness for the university. He also added, “We attribute this achievement to the persistent efforts of ‘Team RGU’ and ‘its 4 pillars--the teachers, academic administrators & non-teaching fraternity, the students and the members of the various bodies and committees for the improvement in teaching and research environment of the university leading to high-quality teaching, relevant and focused research of highest quality in the university.” David Pertin, Joint Registrar (Academic & Conference) of RGU, also a member of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, RGU said as the university is in its budding stage and growing this added another feather to their cap. He added, “Holistic maintenance and presentation of data or statistics to the ministries by the various branches, departments, institutes, centres and cells of the university are key to such rankings.”
