Remarks

Jadavpur is a very versatile place. It gives the best of opportunities and the worst of distractions. The political scenario of the place is more disturbed than other places. One has to take responsibilities for one's own actions more than in other colleges. One should have the eyes to discern what is good and what is bad. But yeah, the situation here is nit as bad as the media shows it is. Many people think that JU has very toxic seniors. It is wrong and the seniors are mixed in population. As a whole, one would get very mixed experience here.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

I think the course is up to date and follows the recent system well. It follows the UGC recommendations for the coursework and is definitely robust. The new CBCS system was adopted recently and hence the whole course is divided into six semesters. The number of exams varies from semester to semester with weightage give in practicals too. Elective subjects have to be taken in first 4 semesters too. Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course has to be taken too.

Placement Experience

4.5

Jadavpur is known for its placements - Engineering in particular. Considering the present crisis in job market, Jadavpur offers good placements in engineering - probably the best in West Bengal ( excluding IIT Kharagpur ). Arts department doesn't have good placements though. Oneof the best things is that no University or college offers placement and campusing for physics students in West Bengal, except for Jadavpur. Though very few students opt for campusing and most opt for higher studies. Nevertheless, JU has more than average placement in comparison to regular job market in India. PhD stipend in JU is low in comparison to other higher education institutions.

College Events

5

Fests and events are way too common at Jadavpur. On an average, there is some event in some department in every week. Science department organizes less events but arts department experiences many events where prominent alumni members and other honorary members attend them. First year students get 2 Fresher's welcome - one from their department and from the University. Political events are also way too common too.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Being a Public State University, the educational cost of studying here is almost zero. The cost is only in fooding and lodging of the students as most of them are attending the University here but their homes are far. There is no monthly fee. A semester fee of ?1000( not sure if this is the exact amount but it is quite close to this figure) is taken. Thus totalling to just ?2000 in an year.

Fees and Financial Aid

University itself does not offer loan facilities. In case a student can prove his financial hardships, University relaxes the semester fees of the student. Moreover, alumni scholarships are available for students (the amount is not fixed). In science stream, many students get DST Inspire, one of the best scholarships under Central Government. JBNSTS senior scholarship is also common amongst JU science and engineering students.

Campus Life

4

Cultural and extra- curricular activities are some of the strongest points of Jadavpur University. The University hosts Inter-departmental football, cricket and other sports competitions. Good performers are shortlisted for the University teams in different sports. In fact, many students come to study at Jadavpur University on the basis of Sports quota. Debates, extempore, speech and other competitions are also common at Jadavpur. National level prizes are common in this regard. Laboratories are some of the best in India, if not world. The geolgy department is exceptionally well- equipped and funded by Central Government. Many other Central Government funded laboratories are present too.

Alumni/Alumna

Jadavpur University has students across the whole whole world and even our Professors have a good network. We do get help from seniors when we need it. The seniors even help to get to know the campus qnd about the exam pattern. Contrary to what others think, the seniors of Jadavpur University do not heckle the students (except the day of fresher's) and are easily approachable. Yet, there are seniors those who would try to persuade the students to join politics. That is something to be wary of.

Admission

I had to apply for the course in the official website of Jadavpur University and fill up the online form. The form takes 30-45 minutes to be filled up. A application fee of ?150 had to be paid. The merit list was set on the basis of class 12th marks. We had to appear for final counselling and document verification on the date they mentioned and were admitted on the day of counselling.

Faculty

4

Jadavpur University has one of the finest faculties is entire West Bengal. It is known for its engineering faculty but excels in Physics too. Being a student of Physics, I am quite happy with the faculty as they are quite helpful and easily approachable. Having more than 20 permanent professors us in itself a testament of the robustness of the faculty. Other departments have strength too as this is a very old Institution.

Placement Experience:

People who major in my department usually opt for masters over placement not because of this college but because overall industrial or academic opportunities are better with a pg degree. Masters from this college is not recommended as i have heard so from my seniors. Some of my seniors managed to crack competitives and secure MSc seats at great places. Training and Placement cell had a good coordinator previously but now its almost non existent. Companies do come and hire Bpharm, Mpharm and MSc candidates. Packages are below average. Only Nestle pays well. But if you do well you'll eventually climb up the corportate ladder. From the time i am here i have not heard of any BSc candidate getting placed. Most go for higher studies.

Placement Experience:

The average package offered for such roles ranges between ?2–3 LPA, while the highest package offered to a BSc student is around ?4 LPA, depending on skills and specialization. Overall, around 15–20% of BSc students get placed through campus drives, and many students rely on off-campus opportunities.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum was well thought out as per me but there were subjects that i found absolutely unnecessary. Subjects like history evs and clc were in no way related to my course. Coming to the main subjects Design, Printing, Photography and film and Media Training were absolutely necessary for my course and whilst the faculty for some of these subjects were really bad, some were good. It is also important to mention none of these subjects actually helped us prepare for the real world. Instead internships and freelance helped us more than these subjects could ever do. Exams were held bi monthly to keep track of what we learnt and every 6 months we had our semester exams. Overall if you want to be a media professional INTERNSHIPS AND JOBS WILL HELP YOU MORE THAN A COLLEGE WILL. I am biased on this opinion as my college didnt provide me with the correct guidance and support i needed to make it in the real world.

Placement Experience:

In case of computer science department, placement is provided at the Last year of M.sc course. Many companies like Wipro, b10x, Tata visited here. Highest package ever is three lakh per annum. 20-40% of the students got placement after completing M.Sc computer science. My plan after B.sc is to pursue MCA.

Course Curriculum Overview:

* It's all about practical knowledge, we are getting from this course and another aspect is if you wants to make your career in research or lecturer then you should go for it. *No changes required in teaching methods but if college will provide hostel facilities and campus requirement drive, then it will better for candidates.
