VIT Vellore review

Positive: The college has a good placement record and very good cultural events. It also holds out regular workshops for students to learn from professionals from industries in the form of guest lectures. Negative: I would have to say that the curriculum is a bit hectic and not industry-oriented. I gained knowledge but don't know how to apply it in the real world. There is too much competition due to the hectic curriculum which includes Digital assignments, Regular lectures, Quizzes, Labs, Lab assignments, Continuous assessment tests, Project Reviews, Attendance Maintainance, final assessment tests. They should be more industry-oriented rather than pushing students to the core and leaving no space for individual learning. Also, students are just expected to know things from before by the teachers which is very bad.

The course curriculum is not the best. It could certainly be made better. There are courses with labs, theories, and projects which is very hectic for students along with the internal digital assignments, quizzes, and continuous assessment tests. In certain courses where labs are necessary, only the theory component is available. An example is the Artificial intelligence elective course where the only theory was taught and no industry knowledge was gained.

VIT has an excellent placement record. The 2020 batch had an average CTC package of 7 LPA and the highest package being 40 LPA given by Microsoft to 19 students. The college is visited by 600+ companies and there is a placement guarantee provided you pass all courses. There are close to 500 super dream offers(10LPA+), 1500-2000 dream offers (8LPA-10LPA) and the rest are all regular offers (3LPA-8LPA). In the 3rd year of engineering, many MNCs come providing summer internships for 2 months as well with a monthly stipend of 10,000-1,00,000.

VIT hosts 2 of the biggest events. There is a technical event held in the month of September which is called GraVitas and the cultural event is held in the month of February which is called Riviera. The events organize hackathons, workshops, competitions from sports to gaming and also include things such as pro shows where celebrities come for live performances.

The fee can be a bit expensive. There are 5 categories of each engineering course. Category 1 being the least and category 5 being the most. The difference in each category comes to about 50,000 per year. For a computer science bachelor's, the fee for category 1 was 2,50,000 per year which comes to about 10 Lakhs for 4 years degree, and category 5 was 4,50,000 per year which comes to about 18 Lakhs for 4 years. This is excluding the fee for mess and hostel. There are 3 different types of mess which you can choose between vegetarian, non-vegetarians and special. Fees are different for all 3. There are 5 different types of room you can choose which come in AC and non- AC variants, including 1- bed, 2-bed, 3-bed, 4-ber and 6-bed

The college provides scholarships to students who have scored ranks between 0-10000. Category 1 students get a scholarship of 50,000 per year and category 2 students get a scholarship of 25,000 per year. This scholarship is received at the end of every year. Although the scholarship is foregone if you fail any subject over the course of engineering or if your attendance goes below 75%. The college allows you to take education loans from various banks. I had taken a loan from HDFC bank.

VIT is known for its cultural societies. You can get to be part of more than 150 different club societies such as IEEE, AISEC, and various other organizations in the college. They also organize regular workshops for students and lots of events too. The gender ratio is towards the male. It would be 80% of boys to 20% of girls. 30% of the population belongs to south India and the rest 70% is the rest of India and NRIs.

I would rate the hostels 8. Almost all the facilities are given to students such as outdoor stadiums, indoor stadiums, gyms, swimming pools, etc. The security is very tight and the rooms are great to live in. The hostels are sharing bases where you can select from 5 different sharing options including 1 bed, 2 bed, 3 bed, 4 bed, and 6 bed. Although there is a limited number of AC rooms. There room counseling is held every year based on the merit received in the previous year. Based on your CGPA, you are given ranks and your room counseling is done based on your ranks. If all rooms get over then you may have to stay in dorms which are shared by 15-20 people. The hostels also provide mess and night canteen benefits with chemist shops, department shops, and food shops readily available.

Seniors are very helpful as they have experienced things before us which were new to us such as the FFCS course selection system (Fully flexible course selection) where the students have to choose their own courses, their own teachers, and their preferred slot times. They are also helpful in giving out some hacks to survive as VIT can be a bit hectic. I feel that college pushes you a bit too much.

The admission process is based on the entrance exam. The entrance exam is VITEEE. Ranks are given out to each student after results and they are called for counseling according to ranks. There is a fixed number of seats for each engineering and there are 5 types of categories to get admission, the 5th category being the highest fees. I chose VIT because it is a reputed institute with a good placement record.

The faculty is very qualified but I feel that they don't have enough teaching experience. Even though they say that they have teaching experience of 10+ years, some of them feel a bit lackluster. On the other hand, some faculties are very good.
