Entrance Preview

I joined B.Sc in Biochemistry (Hons.) after my higher secondary exam (WBCHSE). There was no entrance exam for this particular course at Asutosh College and the admission was based on the score of our higher secondary examination. I applied for this course as I was inspired by my elder cousin who was then pursuing her higher studies in this same subject.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

The course curriculum was laid out in such a manner that it was beneficial in both industrial as well as higher education purpose. It even helped us in preparing for other competitive exams like IIT-JAM, TIFR common entrance, IISC entrance, NET, etc.

Internships Opportunities

We were offered internship in our final year in either Dey's Medical or Bengal Chemicals, where we were offered a monthly stipend Rs. 3000 for three months.

Placement Experience

5

Our head of the department, Dr. Chandra Chaudhuri made sure that we got proper exposure to highly esteemed companies for our placement. In our graduating year, we were placed in companies like Cognizant and Infosys. Out of 39 students, 18 of us got placed in either of the two, with basic packages ranging between 12, 000 per month to 16, 000 per month.

College Events

5

Yearly freshers and farewell festivals were ritualistically conducted. Apart from them, we had reunions and a cultural fest where students from outside colleges also participated. Lots of competitions and curriculum were included in this cultural fests ranging from debates to eastern and western dance/music competitions, etc.

Fee Structure And Facilities

As our course, i.e B.Sc. in Biochemistry (Hons.) was a self financed course, the fees were a bit hefty (Rs. 30, 500 per year). Still it was comfortable considering the facilities given to us.

Fees and Financial Aid

Our department or college provided loan facility, although it provided scholarship of Rs. 2000 per month to under-privileged students (maximum 2 students per batch per department). For acquiring loan, the officials did provided every document whenever required.

Campus Life

4.5

Gender ratio was almost balanced. I being a female never felt any partiality towards selection of men in any curriculum or events, besides sports like cricket or football especially held for men. Debates and seminars were held on a regular basis and our professors encouraged us to participate as frequently as possible. We even attended national level conferences arranged by Indian Academy of Science.

Alumni/Alumna

We are very much well connected with our seniors as well as juniors. We always look forward to our yearly reunions. We even try maintaining a proper network with our retired professors and part-time lecturers. These interactions gives us ample insight into various job opportunities and different career options.

Faculty

5

The board of faculty members lead by Dr. Chanda Chaudhuri was supportive and quite composed in their own feats. Armed with excellent teaching experience, we had almost no issues in understanding and keeping up with the syllabus.

Placement Experience:

People who major in my department usually opt for masters over placement not because of this college but because overall industrial or academic opportunities are better with a pg degree. Masters from this college is not recommended as i have heard so from my seniors. Some of my seniors managed to crack competitives and secure MSc seats at great places. Training and Placement cell had a good coordinator previously but now its almost non existent. Companies do come and hire Bpharm, Mpharm and MSc candidates. Packages are below average. Only Nestle pays well. But if you do well you'll eventually climb up the corportate ladder. From the time i am here i have not heard of any BSc candidate getting placed. Most go for higher studies.

The course is very relevant as it provides us an overall knowledge of biology and not dividing it into various sections rather giving us an insight of every aspect of biology. It includes everything such as microbiology, zoology, botany, physiology, molecular biology and so on.

Completely relevant. As the college is autonomous it has its own syllabus. Which matches with the net gate jam exam syllabus. When someone came our college for seminar they strange that we know this much. Exam are quite difficult in 2 months interval.

Placement Experience:

In case of computer science department, placement is provided at the Last year of M.sc course. Many companies like Wipro, b10x, Tata visited here. Highest package ever is three lakh per annum. 20-40% of the students got placement after completing M.Sc computer science. My plan after B.sc is to pursue MCA.

Course Curriculum Overview:

* It's all about practical knowledge, we are getting from this course and another aspect is if you wants to make your career in research or lecturer then you should go for it. *No changes required in teaching methods but if college will provide hostel facilities and campus requirement drive, then it will better for candidates.

Course Curriculum Overview:

B.Sc Computer Science Faculty: Student ratio is = 4:23 may vary a bit Faculty are well Qualified & Teaching method is okay good, but not to the mark like very good or excellent. The exam term was timely (sometimes it gets a bit late due to some natural disaster like cyclone, heavy rainfall, etc or any govt. & university delays), and the exam level is nearly too difficult, something like in between moderate to difficult.
