The best part about the college is its location. It rests in the arrival hills and is beautiful place. The technology used for teaching is the latest. They believe in out of the box teaching standards and enables an overall development in the individual. The bad remark would be that the campus life is all you have. You are a little secluded from the rest of the world, though its well connected.
NU Exam- It was published in the newspaper about the new course starting up in NIIT University Campus. The course was GIS. Written and Interview performance were the admission criteria i do not remember the score I got. But i guess it was decently high as I was offered their scholarship too. The main reason for choosing this course was it was the upcoming technology--GIS (Geographic Information System). GIS, highlighted the power of location and the course structure introduced us to remote sensing and other GIS based technology. Also they were having scholarship schemes. I, being from Delhi, felt this would also allow me to come home more often.
The course curriculum is vast. It is a 2 year masters program and compromises on remote sensing, use of arcgis software (arcgis desktop), cartography, geostatistics, spatial analysis, GIS programming and GIS project management skills. Electives included GIS for environment and natural resource monitoring or Entrepreneur skillset. These electives were for more overall knowledge of an individual. More practical example based.
The 2 year course is 1 and half year on campus and 6 months of internship. Companies come to campus of internship recruitment such as cybertech, ESRI India Ltd etc. The stipend ranges from 15,000 to 20,000 INR per month.
The placement and job opportunities are individual based. Companies like PWC, Cybertech, ESRI India Ltd all come to campus. The placements are written interview and verbal interview based and on the basis of your performance and answers provided in the interview the selection is based. The organisation also guides you to in case you are more interested in further studies. Students from NIIT university after completion of their masters have joined other universities such as IISc Banglore, University of Kerala etc for higher studies.
Annual Day is a huge event in NU and the preparation includes participation of all the students. It is a day long events where VIP guests along with passed out students (convocation) and their family is invited to the campus. All the work of students are put out to display as well. The Cultural fest is a 3 day long fest with music, DJ night, fashion shows, nukkad natak, band performances, theater, quizzes all lined up for all the students in campus.
The fee is in line with today's fee structure. Full Fees is : 1,57,500 (annual university fee)c+ 1,09,800 (Annual Hostel fee). If any scholarship is awarded, then the fee structure will change. Total payment is 2,67,300/- per year however, on the basis of ones performance the ESRI scholarship rewards scholarship.
The university offers scholarship to meritorious students i myself have received a 100% scholarship and other scholarship are also available on the basis of your performance in the admission interviews.
The universities has immense culture. The annual fest "ingeNUity" is a grand success. The labs have the latest software to be used by students and is open til 11 pm. Sport facility is immense in the campus. Badminton, volleyball, basketball, cricket, TT etc have completions between the various houses throughout the year. Technical fest is also organised, where the final year students display their projects which again are of high standards.
The senior batch are all in various organisations and doing well themselves they are always available to help you out whenever required they help before your placements by telling you what the industries are looking for, which proves to be extremely helpful.
The exam structure is simple. There is semester exams at the end of each semester (3 semester in campus). At the end of 4th semester (internship) we have a presentation in campus to showcase what we have learned and are given credits on the basis of that presentation. Besides the semester exam, we are given various projects to work on and submitted on the NU portal, which are later graded and included in the final result. Other presentation are also done on and off during the semester.
The newspaper article stated a date to come to the NIIT office in gurgaon and all the formalities were to be completed there itself. On arrival to their office, we were asked to fill out the admission process application form which had all our academic details. We were told to get our original certificates to and a set of xerox, which were attached with our application form. There was a written interview of MCQ for 1 hr, and the selected candidates were asked to wait further for the verbal interview. The verbal interview was with the course proffessor who asked us about any projects we have worked with and other general GIS related question. Once that was over we were sent home and were told we would be told the results via mail.
The faculty is well knowledgeable about this course. This course being new and upcoming there are more innovative ways to teach, which the faculty uses. There is external professors taking a few seminars, if not physically, but through skype. There are physical activities where we were told to do digitization by ourselves withing the campus. Since the faculty is available on campus, help is always available. The study and homework is not textbook limited, but more research oriented, which allows the student to think on their own lines. The faculty is always available to guide us with out research work. I think the teach methodology keeps the students engulfed.
