An insight into BHU - capital of knowledge

I choose this course due to my interest in papers on social sciences from school times especially History, Economy and Geography. Along with that, it was beneficial for my future plan as I aspire to become an IAS officer and the subjects of social science comprise a vast part of its syllabus. The faculty ratio was about 1:60 and in some cases slightly higher depending upon the preference of language of instruction. The faculty here is one of the best among all Indian universities and they are highly knowledgeable and experienced. They know how to groom new students according to future plans and to give a better understanding of their syllabus too. One of the most positive things about BHU is its examination system. Term-end exams are very timely and results are also published on time. Exams are conducted in a good and fair environment. Passing examinations are not difficult if you are regularly studying the syllabus in classes. You can get high grades by having preparations.

The fee structure for the course during my time was about 2200-2500 per annum excluding Hostel fees. It is not a very high fee structure and can be afforded by most students. So, the low fee structure was a positive side of BHU for meritorious students who come from poor financial backgrounds. Now after the fees hike policy, the fee structure has changed considerably, and it is a bit high fee as compared to earlier. Yeah, students also get some sort of scholarship and financial assistance depending upon their category, mainly provided under state govt scholarship programmes, scholarships for minorities and backward categories etc. There are options for financial assistance and jobs on campus to have some financial aid such as programmes like "Earn while Learn". Students can earn some money while providing some time for minor tasks related to the university.

Life at the BHU campus is one of the most beautiful and memorable phases one can experience. Campus life is very enjoyable and full of fun, creativity and innovation. All the faculties have their own social clubs related to various fields such as dance, music, visual arts, and social and political systems. Annual fests are for all the faculties or institutes of the university, individual ones and on the university level as well. Tech fests are also for the respective faculties. The annual cultural fest of BHU is named "Spandan" and is generally organised in March month. The faculty of Social Sciences also has a cultural fest known as "Abhikalpan". Libraries are present in universities, Faculties and even at department levels. They are full of all types of books and provide a nice environment for studying. A cyber library is also present there. Classrooms have good infrastructure and amenities. Inter-hostel sports festivals and also on the university level are also present.

Hostel facilities are very nice at BHU. There are over 75+ hostels on campus for both males and females. Hostels are good in infrastructure and hygiene. For UG level in the Faculty of Social Sciences, there are two hostels for males, A.N.D hostels and S.M.D hostel. Hostels are spacious and students are provided with a cupboard, bed and study table and chair. Electricity is available all the time and potable water and Wi-Fi facility are also there. The registration process for hostels is done at the time of counselling for admission and is allocated according to the merit in the university entrance test, as hostels are limited. Meals are provided two times a day and canteens are also available in most of the hostels.

At the time of my admission, it was through an entrance test called BHU-UET which means Undergraduate Entrance test, conducted by University for all courses. Eligibility of the BA (Hons.) Social sciences were to be passed in the Intermediate or HSC with at least 45% of total marks. Application for UET was through online mode and the form was available on bhuonline.in the website. The application process is easy and the application was 600 INR for a course. Yeah, BHU also provides reservation benefits, and it is availed at the time of application itself. People can choose options for reservation according to their category.
