What Students Say
Likes
- Campus life is vibrant with lots of fests, seminars always going on. Students from different states and backgrounds make the campus pretty diverse and colourful. Mingling with different students is quite fun and broadens your thinking.
- The hostel facility is the best. In hostel you get to live with students from varied states and backgrounds and it looks like mini India.
- Free Bus service around the campus. You can travel from hostel to faculty, faculty to faculty in bus and it's free of cost. Given the large size of campus, it's quite useful.
Dislikes
- There is issue of safety for girls students. There have been incidents when girls haven't feel safe, especially at late night on campus road. and BHU administration hasn't done enough to make them feel safe.
- In Arts faculty Hostels where I live, there are frequent incidents of fights among students which turn violent every now and then. In such case, BHU administration fails and UP Police is called upon to control the situation.
- Some teachers aren't punctual in class and their way of teaching is also not up to the mark.
Course Curriculum Overview
I took admission in BA (Hons) Arts - English. I chose it because I am fascinated by English literature although in 12th I was in PCM i.e Science stream. In BA (Hons) you have 3 subjects (2 core and 1 honor), 1 language, and 1 soft skill paper (only in 2nd year). There is approx 40:1 student-teacher ratio but on an average day not more than 25 students are present in the class (that's college for you. All teachers are quite proficient and highly qualified. Most of the professors have a very enjoyable way of teaching but some others' classes are just boring! Here is semester system i.e in 3 years, we have 6 semesters in total. Semester exams are conducted timely and strictly! Each paper is of (70+30) marks- 30 marks for assignments & class test and 70 marks for theoretical exams. The theory exams are quite strict and if you don't study you are most likely to fail.
Internships Opportunities
There is a placement team that informs students about internship opportunities from time to time through social media and notices. The also help students find suitable internships. The companies providing internships include BYJU, Textbook, and other educational and management companies and institutions.
Placement Experience
In 3rd year ( 6th sem), placement drives take place on campus. Those who take foreign languages like French, German, etc as honors are offered placements by various companies like Amazon, Reliance, Zomato, etc. There is a placement team which helps students find jobs and internships. Salary packages vary from 4-5 lakh p.a. But if you are pursuing UG courses in subjects like English, History, Geography, etc you usually don't get a chance for placement. I am pursuing B. A with English as honors. There was no official placement drive in my department and I intend to pursue a PG course in English.
Fees and Financial Aid
As it is a Central University, the tuition fees and even hostel fees are quite affordable. For BA the tuition fee is approx 1800-2000 per annum (depending on the course). The hostel fee is also approx 2000 per annum. However, there are various scholarships available for students and there is an 'Earn while you Learn' program too for needy students. But if you don't get a hostel, you will have to rent accommodation outside the University campus and it can cost you about 4500 p.m ( food included). In the hostel too, they serve you 2 meals a day ( 50 for each meal) i.e 100 on food for 1 day. Of course, you have the option to skip the meal but you can't prepare food in hostel rooms.
Campus Life
Life at the campus is always buzzing. There is some festival, seminar, or fest going on Almost every day. There is an annual festival and on various festivals like Saraswati Puja ( it also happens to be the foundation day of BHU), Janmashtami there are grand celebrations in which all faculties and hostels take part. In BHU there are several small libraries ( libraries of each hostel, and faculty). There is also a major library Siyajirao Gaikwad Library - it has 2 parts: popularly called 'Central Library' and 'Cyber Library'. This Library has a very vast collection of books, magazines, research papers, etc. For students interested in sports there are numerous sports to choose from like Basketball, football, hockey, cricket, etc. There is also a Mountaineering club, NSS, and NCC (all 3 wings). It also has a large Gym, swimming pool, and dedicated sports grounds for various sports. There are many different clubs run by different faculties and students through which students can discover themselves.
Admission
The year I took admission i.e. 2020, BHU held its own UET(University Entrance Test) for UG & PG Courses. For BA (Hons) courses, you need to be 12th passed irrespective of stream. "bhuonline.in" is the official website of BHU, and there you can apply for various UG & PG courses. But Starting in 2021, admission to BHU is through the All India CUET (Central University Entrance Test). This means, Now you can apply for courses in BHU through CUET only.
