PEC Chandigarh, BE/B.Tech

Remarks

PEC is not a perfect college for any one, it could be a great college for many though. It does offer a lot in terms of personality development, social skills building and education in case of some departments but on the flip side it also needs to be upgraded to better faculty and relevant course material. (efforts have been made after my batch graduated). Much more research work needs to be undertaken by both faculty and students, in order to come remotely closer to IITs and infrastructure needs to be improved. PEC has noticed a decline both in college rankings as well as the rankings of students entering the college which is worrisome. Go for PEC if you want to build your social skills, live in lovely city and if you can't get into NITs or Thapar.

Entrance Preview

AIEEE is to be taken to get into PEC, you get a good rank and you get admitted into the college. I chose PEC because of its good brand value (times have changed now) and location (Chandigarh).

Course Curriculum Overview

3

So I did Metallurgical engineering, which is a pretty boring field, I did it because that is what I got given the rank I had. And to make matters worse, the faculty and curriculum was severely old and outdated, barely any research work was going on. Only a couple of people in my batch actually enjoyed the subjects or wanted to pursue a career in metallurgy. I believe one of the strongest reasons for that was that the main faculty (except for a couple of professors) wasn't engaging or knowledgeable enough to be in their position. They recounted their experiences from 20-25 years ago; that department really needs a fresh batch of professors. But on the bright side, the course structure changed completely the year I graduated, but can not comment on its relevance now.

Internships Opportunities

Yes internships were provided by the college but most of them are unpaid especially for non IT internships. Internship process was mostly student facilitated, professors could arrange internships only for a handful of students.

Placement Experience

4

In my batch about 70-75% students got placed. Major companies were DE Shaw, Alstom, Dabur, Maruti, ZS Associates, Smart Cube. But I have heard that the placement trend got better in the subsequent batches as more and better companies visited campus.

College Events

4

PECfest is one of the biggest college festivals in the country, with a footfall of more than 20k people. One would have a great time participating in one of the teams organizing the event, you get to learn some real life business lessons doing it.

Fee Structure And Facilities

So, the fee was decently affordable being a government institute. I used to pay 40k per semester which isn't close to most private institutes.

Campus Life

3.5

PEC has about 10-12 very active clubs and societies, one could definitely harness his skills in dancing, acting, singing, debating, entrepreneurship, designing, film making, coding and many more aspects.

Hostel Facilities

3

Hostels are probably the best part of college life. Hostel rooms in PEC are decent enough for a government college but the toilets are BAD. They are small, smelly and not maintained. There were like public toilets at train or bus stations. Food on the other hand was quite subjective since some hostels cooked nice meals while others made prison food. But then again the catering tender keeps on changing in hostels and I can't comment on the food quality now. PS - Girls hostels had much better food than boys hostels.

Exam Structure

Exam time was a pretty stressful, especially due to the fact that no one ever paid attention in class. Apart from that we did not get any breaks between exams during mid semester exams (sometimes we even had two exams in a day) and we got a leave of 1 day during final exams.

Faculty

3.5

As I said, it's your teacher who truly makes or breaks your educational experience in life and my department didn't have as knowledgeable or competent faculty as other departments. We studied from different professors in CS, electrical, applied science, mechanical and civil departments, I found them to have a much better hold on the subject matter. So faculty is always a mixed bunch, most are amazing, but a lot of them of are simply incompetent.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I would rate the course plan around 7 out of 10 in terms of relevance and depth. I chose this course mainly because it includes core tech subj like DSA, DBMS, OS, AI and cloud, which are useful for jobs in tech field. The presence of lab work and proj based learning also influenced my choice. The curriculum gives a fair base in theory and basic prac skills. It helps in campus place prep and also builds base for higher study like MTech or MS. But real world skill still depends a lot on self study, online course and side proj. Some topics feel updated, but a few subj are still too theory heavy and not linked to real case use. Exams are held twice as mid test and once as end term in each sem. There are also quiz, viva and lab eval. The level is moderate. If you attend class and revise notes, it is manageable. For improve, more live proj, hack event, ind visit and case study should be added. Teach method should shift more to code demo and less slide read
