NIT Durgapur, BE/B.Tech
Reviewed on Oct 15, 2017(Enrolled 2016)

Remarks

The most important thing about this college is the NIT tag. The campus is huge but falls short of proper infrastructure. Hostels in particular need to be renovated. There are many new projects going on inside the campus. Those students who are inclined to research will not like the environment, while those who want to have some fun will be more than happy. Here, you have to work hard by yourself to excel, very little help is provided by college authorities and faculties. Living on your own makes you learn a lot about the life. The friends made here make your life at campus fun. We will learn to find happiness in small things of life. NIT Durgapur is a memorable experience and the experience you will gain here will be with you all your life.

Entrance Preview

I cleared JEE MAINS in 2015 and got a decent rank. Admission is done on the basis of rank obtained in JEE MAINS by the counselling process. All India Ranking as well as home state, other state and category ranks are evaluated for admission to different courses. My home state is Bengal and NIT Durgapur was perfect as it is a reputed college and is close to my home.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

NIT Durgapur as being one of the NITs is an Institute of National Importance. A reputed institute for engineering in India. Undergraduate courses offered here are very good.Courses are well laid out and efficiently taught. In the first year, subjects are common for all students. From second year inwards we study our departmental courses. Most of the study you have to do is by yourself and not in the classroom. Courses are well taught and professors and are helpful. I chose Mechanical Engineering and it is very good in terms of faculty, teaching, practicals and jobs offered. There are well-equipped laboratories and workshops for practicals. Besides this, there is nothing more effort to learn practically all we have is theoretical courses. There are libraries and computer center for your help. Coming to the research part there is not much to say about. Research is done by some professors but student interaction is very low. A lot of electives are offered from fifth semester onward both open and departmental. In open electives, we can choose some offered subjects of different branches while in departmental electives we have to choose from numerous courses of our own branch. If you are sincere enough you can excel in your department easily.

Internships Opportunities

College requests companies to take internship every year. Internships from campus are few but we can always do an internship on our own from outside. Companies provide stipend amount for internships.

Placement Experience

3.5

Placement scenario of NIT Durgapur is generally average. But last year it was poor as follows BT-59.09, CHE-60.38, CIV-48.15, CSE-74.42, ECE-69.47, EE-55.17, IT-72.94, ME-62.88, MME-54.79, Total 62.93 The highest package was 29 l.p.a for cse. The average salary was 6.5 l.p.a. Top companies that visited were Directi, D E Shaw, Amazon, Microsoft, CESC, MU Sigma, Oracle, L&T, Qualcomm, Tata Motors, VE Commercial, MN Dastur are to just a name a few. The full list is available on college website. This year there has been some changes in the placement cell and more companies are coming, hopefully, there will be better placements.

College Events

4

Basically, there are many clubs in NIT Durgapur for different curricular activities and they host their own events round the year. But the two major events of the institute are RECSTACY-the annual cultural fest and AAROHAN-the annual tech fest. Both these events are huge and students from many different colleges came. RECSTACY, in particular, is one big event where the budget is huge and popular celebrities, singers, bands come to perform here. However, the competitions held are not up to the mark and generally the prize money if get is very low. College authorities allocate major part of the money to Recstacy and Aarohan and some part of the budget to smaller fests.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Currently, the tuition fee is Rs.62,500. In addition to that, you have to pay other fees such as hostel fee, Institute fee etc. which will cost you about Rs.7500. Mess fee is to be paid monthly. There is certain limitation to the amount to be paid as per income basis and SC/ST category basis. For the details, you can see Institute website. Scholarship is also provided by Institute and Government and there are always Banks which you can contact for education loans.

Fees and Financial Aid

Scholarship is provided by college to students who come from poor background. Students can also apply for various central government scholarship programs like I apply for minority scheme scholarship of center government. There is a dedicated office for scholarship related matters in the institution for any any inquiry and procedures to application of scholarship.

Campus Life

3.5

There are many clubs in the college for extracurricular activities like CCA, Strokes, NSS, SAE etc. Some of them even host their events. Generally clubs take in students biasedly and there is not much to explore in the clubs. There are also opportunities for Sports. Inter NIT competitions as well as annual sports meet are major events. Those who are good in sports can have facilities for their game.

Hostel Facilities

3

NIT Durgapur is a residential college i.e. you have to stay in your allotted rooms. Hostel for the first year is good but others are old and need maintenance. Rooms are shared by four students in first, second and third years while you are given a separate room in your final year. Food is provided in the hostel itself in mess. There is separate mess for vegetarians and non-vegetarians both. To be honest, do not expect much of the mess food, it is not good. There are always the canteen and many roadside food stalls just outside of the main gate for tasty food.

Alumni/Alumna

We have a proper Alumni cell of NIT Durgapur. There are seminars taking place round the year in which alumni of this college as well as eminent professors from different colleges come and share their work knowledge. Most of the times there are interactive sessions where alumni share their experience.

Exam Structure

Exams are tiresome with mid semesters and end semesters constantly there to make you study almost the whole semester. But vacations such as for puja and holi gives a lot of relief after midterms. Labs can be tough and easy depending on your branch and subjects. Electronics lab is the easiest ones to complete. Core branches labs require effort.

Faculty

4

The faculty here are very qualified, experienced and teach well. All the perfect as are PhD holders and AICTE approved.Although some professors are not that good and may give you a hard time but believe me you'll get through it. Most of the professors are friendly and nice and will help you whenever you want. The professors have their own pace and timetable to complete the syllabus efficiently. They can also give you projects if you want. Some of the professors have contacts in the foreign universities for research and some students have gone abroad for projects and internships after the recommendation from professors.

Studentsbecome eligible for placements from 7th semester. Various companies such as TCS, Infosys, Accenture, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Godrej, etc. come for placements. Earlier many offers used to come however in the recent years the number of offers made have reduced significantly. highest package comes around 10 to 11 lakhs per annum with average being 4-5 lakhs per annum. I have kept my options open after completion of degree in doing further studies that is Mtech or getting into a job whichever seems appropriate at the situation.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The curriculum is perceived as average , lacking specific elements that might make it stand out. In my case, the motivation was not to waste a year by opting for a drop. The flexibility in attendance which let me focus on other interests. The curriculum is same as MAKAUT, and the exam frequency is also controlled by MAKAUT .Areas of improvement is infrastructure and better faculty.
