Course Curriculum Overview

4

The course structure in general attracted me towards it. It is very interesting and relevant, especially because we get corporate exposure along with it in final years. Real-life application is encouraged, but should be encouraged even more, in the starting years also. The teaching method can be more engaging and interesting so that the students do not feel alienated and the teacher doesn't keep dictating. The mugging up of irrelevant concepts should be removed. Exams are conducted throughout the semester, so regular studying is a must. Generally, barring the end semester exam, rest all exams are moderately tough. End semester is higher in difficulty level.

Internships Opportunities

3

The internships start from 3rd year, so I dont have any personal experience. But from what I learnt from my seniors, companies like Accenture, Delloite, and other service and consulting companies appraoch for internships, with stipends starting from around 10k

Placement Experience

3

Generally, students become eligible for campus placements from 5th semester onwards. There are several companies visiting our college for different student categories, like Khadims, Tata, consulting companies like Deloitte etc. Highest package in Economics UG has been around 13.5 lakhs, while the average is around 6 lakhs, because of students pursuing further studies. Placement % is actually irrelevant in this case because it needs to be supplemented by other financial knowledge, plus students pursue further studies so placement is generally lower. My plan after getting the degree is to go for Masters, and plan for other financial professional courses.

Fees and Financial Aid

Year-wise amount payable for BSc. Economics Honours is around 92000, divided in 4 installments over the year. The 1st installment is 34900 this year, of which the breakup is as follows:- Admission Fee - 10000 Registration Fee - 500 Marksheet Fee - 2000 Session Fee - 4500 Library and Cyber Fee - 1800 Computer Lab Fee - 3000 Tuition Fee - 1500 Development Fee - 4800 Additional Fee - 4800 Semester Exam Fee - 2000 The fees can rise by upto 5-10% on the discretion of the college authority. 2nd installment is generally around 12000. The B.Com evening course is much more expensive(1.1 lakhs / year) than the morning batch(around 70k / year). Reservations are on the basis of the ST, SC, OBC or Catholic category.

Campus Life

4

There are lots of events going in the college campus across the year. Goonj was held in October 1st week, which is a music and dance event. Another example, Confluence, was held on Sept 10 this year, a flagship economics event of St. Xavier's. There are lot of societies which the students can join to enhance their CVs and make their college life more interesting and joyful. These societies can be related to acting, management, science, commerce, any language etc. The library is one of the amenities of this college which is top notch and very useful in college life. The place is very peaceful and a wide range of books are available for academics and knowledge enhancement. The classes are not very equipped with technology, with just a projector being present. Digital screens can be installed for better interaction. Another event which took place in Sept was the Xaviers Premier League, another flagship event of Xavier's college, for sports.

Admission

I did not apply in any other college except the St. Xaviers College Kolkata. This college was chosen by me due to the prestige that this college carries, plus the love for economics which I had always. The Economics course from St. Xaviers is a must-do thing if you love economics and get admission in this college. Admission is only through the Higher Secondary Boards Results. The maths score and the aggregate score are combined to get a total score out of 200, on the basis of which the selection is made. The eligibility differs with Board and Stream chosen. This year the cut off for CBSE commerce was 193/200, whereas for Science ISC, it went to around 197. Admission is very tough, as thousands of applicants eye on limited 80-90 seats. Also, reservations are available, which reduces the available seats for general candidates.

Faculty

3

The quality of the faculty is mixed. There are teachers who are very approachable regarding our doubts, namely our micro-economics teacher Mrs. Urmi Mukherjee Ma'am or our Maths Teacher Mr. Pabitra Debnath Sir. The course curriculum is very relevant in today's times, especially with the addition of Multi Disciplinary Courses like R programming, or Value Added Courses like Environmental Studies, or Econometrics for example. The exams are quite rigorous with tough marking scheme and passing percentage of around 80% in major subjects, lower in minor.

Placement Experience:

People who major in my department usually opt for masters over placement not because of this college but because overall industrial or academic opportunities are better with a pg degree. Masters from this college is not recommended as i have heard so from my seniors. Some of my seniors managed to crack competitives and secure MSc seats at great places. Training and Placement cell had a good coordinator previously but now its almost non existent. Companies do come and hire Bpharm, Mpharm and MSc candidates. Packages are below average. Only Nestle pays well. But if you do well you'll eventually climb up the corportate ladder. From the time i am here i have not heard of any BSc candidate getting placed. Most go for higher studies.

Placement Experience:

The average package offered for such roles ranges between ?2–3 LPA, while the highest package offered to a BSc student is around ?4 LPA, depending on skills and specialization. Overall, around 15–20% of BSc students get placed through campus drives, and many students rely on off-campus opportunities.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum was well thought out as per me but there were subjects that i found absolutely unnecessary. Subjects like history evs and clc were in no way related to my course. Coming to the main subjects Design, Printing, Photography and film and Media Training were absolutely necessary for my course and whilst the faculty for some of these subjects were really bad, some were good. It is also important to mention none of these subjects actually helped us prepare for the real world. Instead internships and freelance helped us more than these subjects could ever do. Exams were held bi monthly to keep track of what we learnt and every 6 months we had our semester exams. Overall if you want to be a media professional INTERNSHIPS AND JOBS WILL HELP YOU MORE THAN A COLLEGE WILL. I am biased on this opinion as my college didnt provide me with the correct guidance and support i needed to make it in the real world.

Placement Experience:

In case of computer science department, placement is provided at the Last year of M.sc course. Many companies like Wipro, b10x, Tata visited here. Highest package ever is three lakh per annum. 20-40% of the students got placement after completing M.Sc computer science. My plan after B.sc is to pursue MCA.

Course Curriculum Overview:

* It's all about practical knowledge, we are getting from this course and another aspect is if you wants to make your career in research or lecturer then you should go for it. *No changes required in teaching methods but if college will provide hostel facilities and campus requirement drive, then it will better for candidates.
