Course Curriculum Overview

5

I had Sociology as one of my subjects in class 12th. And from there only, i started taking keen interest in understanding more about society and the theories and concepts related to population, society etc. And hence i chose Sociology hons in my Bachelor’s also. This subject makes me see everything around me from a sociological perspective. Whenever i see rich and poor people on road, i see stratification there and so on. I wish to prepare for upsc so in that examination also, i can take Sociology as my Optional paper. Exams here are not so difficult. With proper strategies, one can ace good marks in the college exams.

Internships Opportunities

3

The maximum package offered in this college is 25 Lakhs per annum. And the average being 6 lakhs per annum. Famous companies like Accenture, Paytm, Wipro, McKinsey & Companies have offered jobs to the students. Many students do their internships under Niti Aayog as well.

Fees and Financial Aid

I am pursuing Bachelors of Arts from Miranda House, a renowned college of Delhi University. My course is BA Honours Sociology. There are around 100 students in my class. Fee for this course is paid annually. I had paid ?15,460 in my very first year. Then one also has to pay for examination fee which depends upon the subjects you’ve chosen. Mostly the examination fee goes around 1200-1300 and it is to be paid twice a year as DU conducts 2 examinations in one year. Rest no other form of fee is there. Students belonging to science background have a slightly higher fee i.e., 19K. I have been receiving scholarship from Miranda House. This scholarship is for those students whose family income is less than 2.5 lakhs per annum. In order to continue the scholarship, students should have 69% of attendance and a CGPA of 7.

Campus Life

5

The annual fest of Miranda House is known as "TEMPEST". It is packed with fun, music, enthusiastic crowd. Stalls are set up in the college during the fest. Famous artists have performed in this college. From finger- licking food to non- stop DJ, Tempest is one of the biggest fests of Delhi University. The library of Miranda House is my most favourite place. With thousands of books and journals and greenery of the garden, studying there is no less than a therapy. In every classroom, we have AC, projectors and wifi connections. The campus offers basketball, tennis, football. Coaches train young minds to ace the world of sports. There are more than 25 societies in college. Starting from English debating society to traditional dancing society, college focuses very well on the extra curriculum activities of the students. We also have women development cell and business society in college to encourage women entrepreneurs.

Admission

Miranda House, Sociology hons was my very first preference and i managed to get it. Miranda House was my first choice because of many factors. First, it is known for its infrastructures. Never ending lawns, beautiful green garden provides peace to the mind. Other reason is, Miranda House is known for its academic facilities. Very famous and strong women are alumni of this college. It is known for its diversity also. Students from all over the world come here to study, contributing to the diversity of this college. Another reason is it is the cleanist college of Delhi University.

Faculty

4

There are good number of professors present in the college for students. All the professors here are very approachable. They are quite friendly in nature with students but at the same time they do maintain professionalism. I am currently in my second year of college and till now, although every teacher here has a unique way to teach but my most favourite professor is Dr. Neha. She is such humble professor and she uses very simply language to teach and make students understand the concepts. She connects the past to the present and provides very insightful discussions on the topics. Exams in Delhi University are easy to medium. If you analyze pyqs nicely and practice them and also if you make short notes nicely, you will manage to score above 8 CGPA.

Night Life

5

I dont live in hostel. I live in flat. But at times we do have classes till 5pm. Miranda House's cafeteria offers variety of food starting from Masala Dosa to White Sauce Pasta in a very affordable price with amazing taste and hygiene. College closes after 7pm but at times specially during Navratri dandiya nights and fest time or special lunch dinner, college remains open till 8pm also. There are a lot of places to eat near the college. From the famous Tom Uncle maggie to the famous cafes in hudson lane, food here is top notch. North Campus is a very safe zone. Police and guards are always on duty here.

As a future law student philosophy was one of the options which was good to opt. Secondly, comparatively less people opt it and it can be one of the better choices if you are preparing for upsc and taking it as an optional. Teaching can be made more interactive as the topics are really interesting

Remarks:

Positive : the faculties are good and I could say our college is the meeting place of various cultures ranging from Kerala to jammukashmir Negative: the infrastructure is poor. Labs and libraries are not so good. And there are stray dogs who often steps into classes and make us afraid. College is not fully air conditioned but is on processing.
