The B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H) is a 4-year full-time, on-campus programme that stands out for its strong integration of hardware and software, with a research-driven curriculum unique among ECE programmes in India. Established in 1998 as an autonomous deemed university, IIIT-H is organised around research centres rather than traditional departments, giving ECE students access to cutting-edge research in areas like VLSI, Signal Processing, Robotics, Computer Vision, and Embedded Systems from the undergraduate level itself. The programme has a sanctioned intake of 60 seats through the JEE Main mode, with additional seats through UGEE (dual degree), SPEC, Olympiad, DASA, and Board-based channels. The total tuition fee is Rs. 4,50,000 per annum (Rs. 18,00,000 for 4 years) for the 2026 batch. IIIT-H B.Tech ECE graduates are highly sought after, with a highest placement package of Rs. 55.6 LPA and an average package of approximately Rs. 21.39 LPA (2024 batch), making it one of the best ECE programmes in India.

Admissions for the 2026 batch are currently in progress. The UGEE 2026 application portal closed on March 31, 2026, with the entrance exam scheduled for May 2, 2026, and interviews from June 4-6, 2026. The JEE Main-based admission portal is expected to open in April 2026 (tentative, based on the 2025 cycle). Students who have appeared for JEE Main 2026 should watch for the IIIT-H JEE admission portal opening.

IIIT-H B.Tech ECE FAQs

Q1. How is B.Tech ECE at IIIT Hyderabad different from ECE at IITs or NITs?

Ans. IIIT-H's ECE programme is unique in its deep integration of hardware and software. Unlike most IIT/NIT ECE programmes that are more hardware-focused, IIIT-H ECE students gain strong programming and software skills alongside core electronics. The research-driven curriculum means students work on live research projects in areas like VLSI, Robotics, and Signal Processing from early semesters. Placement packages at IIIT-H ECE (average Rs. 21+ LPA) are comparable to or better than many IITs for ECE.

Q2. What is the difference between B.Tech ECE (single degree) and B.Tech + MS by Research in ECE (ECD dual degree) at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. The B.Tech ECE is a 4-year single degree programme admitted through JEE Main. The ECD (dual degree) is a 5-year B.Tech + MS by Research in ECE programme admitted through UGEE (own exam + interview). The dual degree includes a research thesis and is designed for students interested in research careers or higher studies in electronics, communications, or related fields. Both share the same core ECE curriculum in the first two years.

Q3. What JEE Main percentile is required for B.Tech ECE at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. IIIT-H does not publish a fixed cutoff. Based on historical data, the closing rank for B.Tech ECE at IIIT-H through JEE Main is typically in the range of 99+ percentile (approximately top 5,000-8,000 ranks in JEE Main). The ECE cutoff is generally lower than CSE. Female applicants may have a different cutoff due to the Diversity Pool.

Q4. What research areas can B.Tech ECE students work in at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. ECE students at IIIT-H can work in research centres covering VLSI Design and Embedded Systems, Signal Processing, Robotics and Autonomous Systems, Computer Vision, Wireless Communications, and Human-Computer Interaction. Students can join these centres from the second year onwards, co-author research papers, and work on industry-sponsored projects. This research exposure is a major differentiator of IIIT-H ECE.

Q5. Can B.Tech ECE students at IIIT Hyderabad get software jobs, or are they limited to core electronics roles?

Ans. IIIT-H ECE graduates are placed in both core electronics roles (VLSI Engineer, Embedded Systems Engineer, Signal Processing Engineer) and software/tech roles (Software Engineer, Data Scientist, Product Manager). The strong programming curriculum at IIIT-H ensures ECE students are competitive for software roles at top tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. This flexibility is a key advantage of IIIT-H ECE over ECE programmes at other institutes.

Q6. Is the hostel mandatory for B.Tech ECE students at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. Hostel accommodation is not mandatory but is strongly recommended, especially for first-year students, as the campus is located in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, which is a major IT hub. On-campus hostel facilities are available for both boys and girls at approximately Rs. 4,000 per month for hostel and Rs. 5,000 per month for mess. Students who prefer to stay off-campus can find rental accommodation in the surrounding areas of Gachibowli, Kondapur, and Madhapur.

IIIT Hyderabad: 2 Answered Questions

How is IIIT Hyderabad's MSIT course for a non it student ? What sort of companies recruit from the MSIT course??

Sabeer Chalana
Anupama Chauhanstudied at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad

IIIT Hyderabad MSIT course is perfect for someone who has a flawed academic profile like a gap year or something. People like these have very limited opportunities so this course might uplift their chances of getting placed decently. However, since you specifically asked, this course is not a good option if you have an IT background. This is because the curriculum is repetitive and covered in a shorter duration. Also, if you are employed, it’s better to invest your efforts in improving your work experience than wasting time on this course.

The placements are decent and in fact, during the first phase, you might get into top IT giants like Amazon, Salesforce, American Express, etc. But if you fail to get placed in these then the only option left is to get into service sector-based companies.

So, this course is best suited for those who are looking for a means to upgrade their academic profile.

Which college should I choose between IIT, Hyderabad & IIIT, Hyderabad for a CSE course?

Divya SarafLives in Hyderabad

Had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad over IIT Hyderabad. While both colleges offer a good CS program, IIIT Hyderabad is the clear winner when it comes to CS. Consider the following points of comparison

  • IIT Hyderabad is a new IIt, so choosing it just because of the IIt tag would be a blunder.
  • IIT Hyderabad is still in its development phase and its campus still needs a few more facilities to become full-fledged operating.
  • IIIT Hyderabad has a better religion and brand name among the IT giants and therefore its placement scenario is way better than IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIIT Hyderabad is well-known for its achievements in competitions like ACM ICPC and GSOC.

I have my cousins in both the institutes and from their discussions I have concluded that IIIT Hyderabad leads in CS opportunities.
