The B.Tech + MS by Research in Computer Science and Engineering (CSD) at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H) is a unique 5-year integrated dual degree programme that combines a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science with a Master of Science by Research, culminating in a research thesis. This programme is designed for students who are passionate about computer science and want to pursue research-oriented careers or higher studies at top global universities. IIIT-H is a deemed university established in 1998, organised around research centres rather than traditional departments, and is widely regarded as one of the best institutes in India for CS research. The programme is admitted exclusively through UGEE (Undergraduate Entrance Examination), IIIT-H's own entrance exam followed by an on-campus interview. The total tuition fee is Rs. 4,50,000 per annum (Rs. 22,50,000 for 5 years) for the 2026 batch. Graduates of this programme are among the most sought-after for research roles, PhD programmes at top global universities, and senior technical positions at leading technology companies.

Admissions for the 2026 batch through UGEE are currently in progress. The application portal closed on March 31, 2026. The UGEE entrance exam is scheduled for May 2, 2026, and on-campus interviews will be held from June 4-6, 2026. Final admission offers are based solely on interview performance.

Key Points

  • Integrated 5-year dual degree: Students earn both a B.Tech and an MS by Research degree, with the MS requiring completion of a research thesis.
  • Admitted exclusively through UGEE: Unlike the single-degree B.Tech (admitted via JEE Main), the CSD dual degree is admitted only through IIIT-H's own entrance exam (UGEE) followed by an on-campus interview.
  • Research-first curriculum: Students work in IIIT-H's world-class research centres from early semesters, covering areas like Computer Vision, NLP, Machine Learning, Robotics, Computational Linguistics, and more.
  • Excellent preparation for PhD and global higher studies: Many CSD graduates go on to PhD programmes at MIT, Stanford, CMU, IITs, and other top global universities.
  • IIIT-H publishes among the highest number of CS research papers in India annually, and CSD students are active contributors to this research output.
  • Diversity initiative: The institute targets at least 25% women in each admitted batch and offers reduced application fees for female applicants.
  • Financial assistance: Students with family income below Rs. 8 LPA can access tuition support through the alumni-funded pay-it-forward scheme from the 2nd semester onwards.

IIIT-H B.Tech + MS FAQs

Ques. What is the UGEE exam and how is it different from JEE Main for IIIT-H admissions?

Ans. UGEE (Undergraduate Entrance Examination) is IIIT-H's own entrance exam for admission to dual degree programmes (B.Tech + MS by Research). It has two sections: SUPR (Subject Proficiency, 60 min) and REAP (Research Aptitude, 120 min), with 25% negative marking. Unlike JEE Main which is a national exam, UGEE is conducted by IIIT-H specifically and is followed by an on-campus interview. The final admission decision is based solely on the interview, not the exam score. JEE Main is used only for single-degree B.Tech admissions at IIIT-H.

Ques. How competitive is the UGEE exam and what is the selection rate?

Ans. UGEE is highly competitive, with thousands of applicants for a limited number of seats across all dual degree programmes. The exam tests both subject proficiency (Class 11-12 level Physics, Maths, Chemistry) and research aptitude (critical and creative thinking). The interview stage is the most critical, as the final decision is based solely on interview performance. Students who have strong academic records, genuine research interest, and good communication skills tend to perform well in the interview.

Ques. What is the MS by Research component in the B.Tech + MS (CSD) programme?

Ans. The MS by Research component requires students to complete a research thesis under the supervision of an IIIT-H faculty member. Students work on original research in their chosen area (Computer Vision, NLP, Machine Learning, Robotics, etc.), publish research papers, and defend their thesis. This is different from a coursework-based MS degree. The research thesis is what makes the CSD dual degree particularly valuable for students targeting PhD programmes or research roles at top companies.

Ques. Can I switch from the dual degree (CSD) to the single degree (B.Tech CSE) after joining IIIT-H?

Ans. Programme switching policies at IIIT-H are limited and subject to institute rules. In general, switching from a dual degree to a single degree is possible in some cases, but it is not guaranteed and depends on academic performance and availability. Students should carefully consider their interest in research before choosing the dual degree programme, as it requires a 5-year commitment including a research thesis.

Ques. What are the career outcomes for B.Tech + MS (CSD) graduates from IIIT-H compared to single-degree B.Tech CSE graduates?

Ans. Dual degree graduates typically have stronger research credentials and often receive higher placement packages than single-degree graduates. They are preferred for research scientist roles, senior engineering positions, and PhD programmes at top global universities. Many CSD graduates have gone on to PhD programmes at MIT, Stanford, CMU, and ETH Zurich, or joined top companies like Google Research, Microsoft Research, and DeepMind. Single-degree B.Tech CSE graduates also have excellent placements but may have fewer research-specific opportunities.

Ques. Is the UGEE exam held only once a year? What happens if I miss the application deadline?

Ans. Yes, UGEE is held once a year, typically in May. The application portal opens in February and closes in late March. If you miss the application deadline, you cannot appear for UGEE that year and will have to wait for the next cycle. There is no provision for late applications. Students who miss the UGEE deadline but have JEE Main scores can still apply for the single-degree B.Tech CSE or ECE through the JEE Main mode when that portal opens in April.

IIIT Hyderabad: 2 Answered Questions

How is IIIT Hyderabad's MSIT course for a non it student ? What sort of companies recruit from the MSIT course??

Sabeer Chalana
Anupama Chauhanstudied at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad

IIIT Hyderabad MSIT course is perfect for someone who has a flawed academic profile like a gap year or something. People like these have very limited opportunities so this course might uplift their chances of getting placed decently. However, since you specifically asked, this course is not a good option if you have an IT background. This is because the curriculum is repetitive and covered in a shorter duration. Also, if you are employed, it’s better to invest your efforts in improving your work experience than wasting time on this course.

The placements are decent and in fact, during the first phase, you might get into top IT giants like Amazon, Salesforce, American Express, etc. But if you fail to get placed in these then the only option left is to get into service sector-based companies.

So, this course is best suited for those who are looking for a means to upgrade their academic profile.

Which college should I choose between IIT, Hyderabad & IIIT, Hyderabad for a CSE course?

Divya SarafLives in Hyderabad

Had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad over IIT Hyderabad. While both colleges offer a good CS program, IIIT Hyderabad is the clear winner when it comes to CS. Consider the following points of comparison

  • IIT Hyderabad is a new IIt, so choosing it just because of the IIt tag would be a blunder.
  • IIT Hyderabad is still in its development phase and its campus still needs a few more facilities to become full-fledged operating.
  • IIIT Hyderabad has a better religion and brand name among the IT giants and therefore its placement scenario is way better than IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIIT Hyderabad is well-known for its achievements in competitions like ACM ICPC and GSOC.

I have my cousins in both the institutes and from their discussions I have concluded that IIIT Hyderabad leads in CS opportunities.
