The Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics (Ph.D. CL) at the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) is a full-time doctoral research programme of 3 to 6 years duration, offered through the Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC). The programme is uniquely designed to admit students from both technical (CS, ECE, Science) and non-technical (Linguistics, Humanities, Social Sciences) backgrounds, making it one of the most inclusive doctoral programmes in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Computational Linguistics in India. The goal is to provide high-level breadth in Computational Linguistics and its related disciplines, and to carry out original in-depth research. The annual tuition fee is Rs. 60,000, and all full-time Ph.D. students receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 31,000 to Rs. 35,000. Admission for Stream 1 (CS/Science/ECE background) is through the PGEE (Postgraduate Entrance Examination), while Stream 2 (Linguistics/Humanities background) is through the Standing Committee portal. Graduates can pursue academic careers as faculty or researchers in India or abroad, or contribute to R&D in the NLP/AI industry.

Admissions for the Monsoon 2026 batch are currently ongoing. The PGEE 2026 application portal is open until 31st March 2026, and the entrance exam is scheduled for 2nd May 2026.

Key Points

  • The Ph.D. CL programme has two distinct streams: Stream 1 for CS/Science/ECE backgrounds (via PGEE) and Stream 2 for Linguistics/Humanities/Social Science backgrounds (via Standing Committee), making it accessible to a very wide range of students.
  • All full-time Ph.D. students receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 31,000 to Rs. 35,000, with additional earning potential through Teaching Assistantship (TA).
  • The programme is housed under LTRC (Language Technologies Research Centre), one of the largest and most reputed NLP/CL research centres in South Asia.
  • The curriculum is structured with compulsory courses in NLP, Computational Linguistics, and programming, plus electives in semantics, speech, language typology, and AI.
  • Stream 1A (CS background) and Stream 1B (Science/Maths/ECE background) have slightly different compulsory course requirements to account for varying backgrounds.
  • Graduates have strong career prospects in both academia (faculty/researcher positions) and industry (NLP/AI R&D at leading technology companies).

IIIT Hyderabad Ph.D. CL FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between the Ph.D. (Computational Linguistics) and the M.Phil. (Computational Linguistics) at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. The Ph.D. CL is a 3 to 6 year full doctoral research programme that admits students from both CS/Science/ECE backgrounds (Stream 1) and Linguistics/Humanities backgrounds (Stream 2). The M.Phil. CL is a 2-year programme specifically designed for students from MA/Linguistics backgrounds (Stream 2 equivalent) who wish to enter the CL/NLP field. The Ph.D. is a more advanced, longer research programme culminating in a doctoral thesis, while the M.Phil. is a shorter research programme. Students who complete the M.Phil. may choose to continue to the Ph.D.

Ques. Can a student from a Computer Science background with no linguistics knowledge apply for the Ph.D. CL at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. Yes, Stream 1A is specifically designed for students from CS/technology backgrounds. The compulsory courses include Natural Language Processing (CS 4725), Computational Linguistics I (HS 5090), Language Typology and Universals (HS 5092), and programming/scripting courses. These courses are structured to provide CS students with the necessary linguistic foundations. No prior linguistics knowledge is required at the time of admission.

Ques. How does the Stream 2 admission process work for the Ph.D. CL at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. Stream 2 is for students from Linguistics, Humanities, and Social Science backgrounds (MA/M.Phil. in Linguistics or related areas). These students do not appear for the PGEE exam. Instead, they apply through the Standing Committee portal, which opens separately (typically around May each year). The selection is based on an interview that evaluates linguistic aptitude, research motivation, and analytical ability. Sanskrit students and individuals with strong language analysis skills are specifically encouraged to apply.

Ques. What research areas are available in the Ph.D. CL programme at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. The Ph.D. CL programme at IIIT-H, offered through LTRC, covers a wide range of research areas in Computational Linguistics and NLP including: machine translation, speech processing, information extraction, natural language generation, computational morphology, syntax and parsing, semantics and pragmatics, language typology, corpus linguistics, and AI applications in language. LTRC is one of the largest NLP research centres in South Asia and has produced significant research in Indian language processing.

Ques. What are the career prospects after completing a Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics from IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. Graduates have two primary career pathways. In academia, they can pursue faculty or researcher positions at IITs, IIITs, central universities, and international research institutions. In industry, they are sought after by leading technology companies (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Indian AI firms) for roles in NLP engineering, AI research, machine translation, speech technology, and conversational AI. The LTRC's strong research reputation and publication record significantly enhances graduate profiles for both pathways.

Ques. Is the Ph.D. CL programme at IIIT Hyderabad suitable for students interested in Indian language NLP?

Ans. Yes, LTRC at IIIT-H has a particularly strong focus on Indian language NLP and has been a pioneer in this area for over two decades. Research areas include machine translation between Indian languages, morphological analysis of Indian languages, Indian language corpora development, and speech processing for Indian languages. Students interested in working on Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Sanskrit, or other Indian languages will find LTRC to be one of the best research environments in the country for this work.

IIIT Hyderabad: 2 Answered Questions

How is IIIT Hyderabad's MSIT course for a non it student ? What sort of companies recruit from the MSIT course??

Sabeer Chalana
Anupama Chauhanstudied at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad

IIIT Hyderabad MSIT course is perfect for someone who has a flawed academic profile like a gap year or something. People like these have very limited opportunities so this course might uplift their chances of getting placed decently. However, since you specifically asked, this course is not a good option if you have an IT background. This is because the curriculum is repetitive and covered in a shorter duration. Also, if you are employed, it’s better to invest your efforts in improving your work experience than wasting time on this course.

The placements are decent and in fact, during the first phase, you might get into top IT giants like Amazon, Salesforce, American Express, etc. But if you fail to get placed in these then the only option left is to get into service sector-based companies.

So, this course is best suited for those who are looking for a means to upgrade their academic profile.

Which college should I choose between IIT, Hyderabad & IIIT, Hyderabad for a CSE course?

Divya SarafLives in Hyderabad

Had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad over IIT Hyderabad. While both colleges offer a good CS program, IIIT Hyderabad is the clear winner when it comes to CS. Consider the following points of comparison

  • IIT Hyderabad is a new IIt, so choosing it just because of the IIt tag would be a blunder.
  • IIT Hyderabad is still in its development phase and its campus still needs a few more facilities to become full-fledged operating.
  • IIIT Hyderabad has a better religion and brand name among the IT giants and therefore its placement scenario is way better than IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIIT Hyderabad is well-known for its achievements in competitions like ACM ICPC and GSOC.

I have my cousins in both the institutes and from their discussions I have concluded that IIIT Hyderabad leads in CS opportunities.
