The Post Graduate Student Status Programme (PGSSP) at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad is a unique part-time learning initiative designed for working professionals based in Hyderabad. It is not a formal degree programme but a "student status" that allows professionals to enrol in individual PG or senior UG-level courses at IIIT Hyderabad without committing to a full degree. Candidates can take a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 2 courses per semester, and the courses completed under PGSSP can be credited towards a formal degree (M.Tech, MS by Research, or PhD) if the student later gains admission to one of those programmes. The programme is offered in both Monsoon (August to November) and Spring (January to April/May) semesters. The total fee per semester ranges from INR 1,00,000 (one course) to INR 1,45,000 (two courses), making it an accessible pathway for professionals seeking to upskill or transition into research. PGSSP is particularly popular among IT professionals in Hyderabad looking to explore AI, ML, NLP, and other advanced technology domains under world-class faculty.

Admission Status: The PGSSP Spring 2026 admission cycle has closed (application portal closed November 30, 2025; shortlist announced December 8, 2025). The next cycle (Monsoon 2026) is expected to open around July 2026, based on previous year patterns. Candidates are advised to monitor the official IIIT Hyderabad PG admissions portal at pgadmissions.iiit.ac.in for updates.

IIIT-H PGSSP FAQs

Ques. Is PGSSP a degree programme? Will I get a certificate or degree from IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. PGSSP is not a degree programme. It is a student status that allows working professionals to take individual courses at IIIT Hyderabad. You will not receive a degree or diploma upon completion of PGSSP courses. However, if you later gain formal admission to an M.Tech, MS by Research, or PhD programme at IIIT Hyderabad, the courses completed under PGSSP will be credited towards that degree.

Ques. Can I attend PGSSP classes if I work in Hyderabad but my office is far from the IIIT Hyderabad campus?

Ans. PGSSP classes are held on weekdays (Monday to Saturday) during regular college hours. You must be able to attend these classes in person on campus. Your employer must also provide an NOC allowing you to attend classes during office hours. If commuting is a challenge, you should assess feasibility before applying.

Ques. How difficult is it to get selected for PGSSP at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. Selection for PGSSP is based on your academic record and professional experience. Candidates with a strong academic background (B.E./B.Tech or equivalent) and relevant IT industry experience generally have a good chance of being shortlisted. The process is less competitive than the full-time PGEE-based admissions, but the institute does screen applicants carefully.

Ques. Can I convert my PGSSP enrolment into a full-time or part-time degree programme at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. Yes. If you perform well in PGSSP courses and meet the eligibility criteria, you can convert to a part-time or full-time M.Tech, MS by Research, or PhD programme. For M.Tech, the conversion involves paperwork with the admissions office. For MS by Research or PhD, you additionally need a faculty advisor who agrees to supervise your research. The courses completed under PGSSP will count towards the formal degree.

Ques. How many semesters can I continue under PGSSP?

Ans. There is no fixed limit on the number of semesters you can remain under PGSSP status. You can continue registering for courses each semester as long as you wish. However, you can take a maximum of 2 courses per semester. If you wish to take a break, you can apply for a semester leave by contacting the admissions office.

Ques. What subjects or courses can I take under PGSSP?

Ans. PGSSP students can register for any course offered at IIIT Hyderabad, provided they meet the course prerequisites. However, only PG-level or senior UG-level courses will be counted towards a formal degree if you later convert. Popular areas include Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, VLSI, Signal Processing, and more. The list of courses offered each semester is published on the IIIT Hyderabad PG admissions website.

IIIT Hyderabad: 2 Answered Questions

How is IIIT Hyderabad's MSIT course for a non it student ? What sort of companies recruit from the MSIT course??

Sabeer Chalana
Anupama Chauhanstudied at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad

IIIT Hyderabad MSIT course is perfect for someone who has a flawed academic profile like a gap year or something. People like these have very limited opportunities so this course might uplift their chances of getting placed decently. However, since you specifically asked, this course is not a good option if you have an IT background. This is because the curriculum is repetitive and covered in a shorter duration. Also, if you are employed, it’s better to invest your efforts in improving your work experience than wasting time on this course.

The placements are decent and in fact, during the first phase, you might get into top IT giants like Amazon, Salesforce, American Express, etc. But if you fail to get placed in these then the only option left is to get into service sector-based companies.

So, this course is best suited for those who are looking for a means to upgrade their academic profile.

Which college should I choose between IIT, Hyderabad & IIIT, Hyderabad for a CSE course?

Divya SarafLives in Hyderabad

Had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad over IIT Hyderabad. While both colleges offer a good CS program, IIIT Hyderabad is the clear winner when it comes to CS. Consider the following points of comparison

  • IIT Hyderabad is a new IIt, so choosing it just because of the IIt tag would be a blunder.
  • IIT Hyderabad is still in its development phase and its campus still needs a few more facilities to become full-fledged operating.
  • IIIT Hyderabad has a better religion and brand name among the IT giants and therefore its placement scenario is way better than IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIIT Hyderabad is well-known for its achievements in competitions like ACM ICPC and GSOC.

I have my cousins in both the institutes and from their discussions I have concluded that IIIT Hyderabad leads in CS opportunities.
