Anna University Admission Process

Anna University does not conduct its own UG entrance exam. B.E./B.Tech admissions across Tamil Nadu — covering government, government-aided, and self-financing colleges affiliated to Anna University — are managed centrally by DoTE through the TNEA process based exclusively on Class 12 board marks.

B.E./B.Tech Admission (TNEA)

TNEA rank is derived from Class 12 marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with a weighted formula. There is no separate entrance exam.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM). Minimum aggregate requirement is 45% for General category (40% for SC/ST)
  • Ranking: Based on Class 12 PCM marks using the official DoTE weighting formula
  • Reservation: Tamil Nadu reservation policy applies — BC: 26%, MBC/DNC: 20%, SC: 15%, ST: 1%, EWS: 10%
  • Counselling: Online preference-filling and seat allotment via tneaonline.org in 3 rounds, followed by supplementary rounds

CEG (College of Engineering Guindy) is the most competitive destination under TNEA. Closing ranks for CSE at CEG for the General category have historically been in the top 500 to 1,000 TNEA ranks, corresponding to Class 12 aggregate marks of 196 to 200 out of 200 in PCM.

M.E./M.Tech Admission (TANCET / GATE)

Postgraduate engineering admissions use TANCET scores or GATE scores. GATE-qualified candidates receive a separate reservation in PG seats across Tamil Nadu engineering colleges.

  • Eligibility: B.E./B.Tech in relevant discipline with minimum 50% aggregate
  • Exam: TANCET (conducted by Anna University) or valid GATE score
  • Selection: TANCET rank or GATE score-based merit list

MBA Admission (TANCET / CAT)

MBA admissions to Anna University departments and affiliated management colleges use TANCET scores. Some affiliated colleges also accept CAT or TAICET scores.

  • Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with minimum 50% aggregate
  • Exam: TANCET MBA / CAT
  • Selection: TANCET rank-based seat allotment via DoTE counselling

Ph.D. Admission

Ph.D. admissions at Anna University are through the university’s own Research Entrance Test or valid NET/JRF fellowship. Shortlisted candidates appear for an interview before the relevant department’s doctoral committee.

Anna University Placements

Each constituent college at Anna University — CEG, MIT, ACT, and SAP — maintains its own Training and Placement Office. There is no single central placement cell for the university. Does Anna University accept JEE Scores?

Aadya Rathi

No, Anna University does not accept JEE Main scores for its regular B.E./B.Tech admissions.

Anna University (including affiliated colleges in Tamil Nadu) admits students through:

  • TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions) — purely based on Class 12 PCM marks. No entrance exam. This is the primary route for Tamil Nadu students.
  • Management Quota — direct admission with higher fees, but still based on eligibility criteria, not JEE scores.

JEE Main is not used by Anna University or its affiliates at all. This is different from NITs/IIITs where JEE is mandatory.

one thing worth knowing — 15% seats at private engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu fall under the All India Quota, which is filled via JEE Main through JOSAA/CSAB. these are NOT Anna University seats — they're at private colleges like SRM, VIT, Amrita etc. Anna University government college seats are all through TNEA only.

so if you're specifically targeting Anna University CEG (College of Engineering Guindy) or other Anna University constituent colleges — focus on your Tamil Nadu board marks and TNEA rank, not JEE Main.

Does having an arrear during the first year in Anna University affect our chances of getting placed?

Sanjay Gupta

Anna University first-year arrear effect on placements:

honest answer — it depends on the company:

  • Top IT companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant): many have a no-arrear policy — they require all papers cleared at time of placement. a first-year arrear that you've already cleared before placement (3rd/4th year) is usually not an issue. what matters is your status at the time of placement
  • Product companies and startups: generally don't care about year-1 arrears if you've cleared them. they focus on current CGPA, coding skills, and interview performance
  • Government jobs/PSUs via GATE: most don't penalize for past cleared arrears. some have aggregate CGPA minimums
  • Core companies: more conservative — they may ask specifically about arrear history

the key insight: if you have a year-1 arrear, clear it as quickly as possible. your current status (all-cleared by placement time) matters more than past arrear history for most companies. don't panic — many successful engineers had first-year arrears. focus on clearing it fast and building skills.

How should I clear my Arrear exam in Anna University BE?

Pritha Senguptastudied at Anna University, Tamil Nadu, India

It is not that easy to clear arrears at Anna University. The right procedure, dedication and time management are the only keys to solving this puzzle.

First of all, you should go through the curriculum and start collecting the relevant notes and information from the course teacher or passed-out seniors who have cleared this examination before. Then set aside at least 3 hours every day to prepare for the topic of procrastination. Go through the notes, and Q&A and prepare yourself dedicatedly until you’re done with the paper curriculum.

Next comes the doubt-resolving part. Don’t hesitate to confess your doubts to the professors or mentors. This will make you clear about concepts and logic because your mind becomes more focused. Keep following NPTEL lectures on your arrear papers. All NPTEL courses are designed to match the Indian university curriculum and are taught by experienced professors from leading institutions.

Try to work smartly as well as hard. If someone follows the question pattern carefully then it is seen that each question of 16 marks consists of two parts. Both options are from the same unit. Now segregate the unit into two parts. So we can assume that both variants are from different parts. Make sure you know at least one part of the unit. This saves time and ensures that you attempt all 16 questions this way. Repeat the steps for each item and you can attempt to answer all the 16-mark questions Try to write the 16-mark questions pointwise.

Following a fixed schedule will increase your time management skills which ensures a higher productivity rate than usual. It will allow you to take breaks as well as enough time to work dedicatedly.

So, it can be concluded that clear goals, passion for the subject, routine, rewards, and a supportive environment are key factors that keep someone motivated to study. A sense of purpose, interest, discipline, and positive reinforcement play essential roles in maintaining the drive to learn and succeed academically.

At Anna University, football players with sports certificates can apply for admission under the Sports Quota, which reserves seats for talented athletes. You must ensure that your certificates are from recognized tournaments at district, state, national, or international levels. During the admission process, submit the certificates for verification through the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority ranking system. If approved, you receive sports marks that increase your admission chances.
