TNAU M.Sc Silviculture FAQs
Ques. Is B.Sc. Agriculture sufficient to apply for M.Sc. Silviculture and Agroforestry at TNAU?
Ans. No, B.Sc. Agriculture is not eligible for this programme. The eligibility is strictly restricted to B.Sc. (Forestry) or B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry from a recognised State Agricultural University, ICAR Institute, Central Agricultural University, or Government-Aided Agricultural College under the 10+2+4 pattern. Candidates with B.Sc. Agriculture backgrounds should consider other M.Sc. programmes at TNAU such as Agronomy, Environmental Science, or Agroforestry-related disciplines where their degree is accepted.
Ques. What is the difference between the TNAU entrance exam route and the ICAR AIEEA-PG route for admission?
Ans. TNAU conducts its own Common PG Entrance Examination (physical, OMR-based) for state-level admissions, primarily for Tamil Nadu candidates. The ICAR AIEEA-PG is a national-level exam conducted by NTA, and candidates who qualify and receive seat allotment to TNAU through ICAR counselling are admitted directly without appearing for the TNAU entrance exam. ICAR-admitted students also receive the ICAR PG Scholarship of ₹12,640 per month, which is a significant financial benefit over the TNAU route.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed at FC&RI Mettupalayam for M.Sc. Forestry students?
Ans. Hostel accommodation is available at FC&RI Mettupalayam with a capacity of 200 boys and 300 girls, but it is not guaranteed. The university explicitly states that students cannot claim hostel accommodation as a matter of right upon admission. Students are advised to apply for hostel accommodation early and also explore private accommodation options near Mettupalayam town in case hostel seats are unavailable.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing M.Sc. Silviculture and Agroforestry from TNAU?
Ans. Graduates can pursue scientific positions in ICAR, ICFRE (Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education), and other State Agricultural Universities. They are also eligible for plantation manager roles in wood-based industries, research positions in private sector organisations, and Group 1 level officer positions in government forestry departments. Additionally, graduates can pursue advanced studies abroad or take up research and commercial silviculture and agroforestry projects. The programme's ICAR-accredited curriculum ensures national and international recognition of the degree.
Ques. Can a candidate apply for two subjects in the TNAU PG entrance exam, and does that improve chances of admission?
Ans. Yes, TNAU allows candidates to apply for a maximum of two subjects in Masters programmes, with a separate application fee for each subject. Applying for two subjects does improve the chances of securing admission, as the candidate appears in entrance exams for both subjects and can be considered for either programme based on merit. However, candidates should ensure they meet the eligibility criteria for both subjects before applying. The total fee for two subjects is ₹3,100 for OC/BC/BCM/MBC/DNC and ₹3,050 for SC/SCA/ST candidates.
Ques. What is the research component of the M.Sc. Silviculture and Agroforestry programme, and how is the thesis guided?
Ans. The programme carries a total credit load of 60 credits, of which 20 credits are exclusively earmarked for thesis research. After completing coursework in the first year, each student is assigned to an experienced faculty member approved by the Dean of the School of Post-Graduate Studies, who guides the student on their chosen research topic. Students are also encouraged to attend symposia, conferences, and undertake internship training at other national or international institutes for a couple of months as part of their research exposure.
