UMD Graduate School applies uniform baseline thresholds, though individual departments enforce stricter cutoffs for competitive programmes.

PG requirements:

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 minimum (recommended); competitive programmes expect 75% or CGPA 7.5/10
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 96 (Reading 26, Listening 24, Speaking 22, Writing 24) or IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with 7.0 in Reading, Listening, and Writing plus 6.5 Speaking; PTE Academic 68 with Writing 68
  • Credential verification: WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation required for most departments
  • Standardised tests: GRE waived by most STEM masters; GMAT still required for Smith School MBA

UG requirements:

  • Academic: Class 12 with 80% to 85% for engineering and business tracks (recommended)
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 7.0 overall for undergraduate admission

Key insight: The Graduate School accepts TOEFL iBT scores taken on or after 21 January 2026 on the new scale; report 5.0 overall meets the 96 threshold on the legacy scale.

University of Maryland, College Park Acceptance Rate 2027

UMD admits 27.9% (estimated) of masters applicants and 24% of PhD applicants across all departments. The undergraduate acceptance rate sits at 44% to 45% (estimated), reflecting stronger competition at the graduate level.

CategoryAcceptance RateNotes
Masters (all)27.9% (estimated)STEM masters admit at lower rates
PhD (all)24% (estimated)Funded seats limit intake sharply
Undergraduate44% to 45% (estimated)Class of 2030 baseline

Computer Science, Data Science and Aerospace Engineering see the sharpest selection, with department-level admit rates well below the overall masters figure. The Smith School MBA admits roughly one in three applicants each cycle.

Reality check: A CGPA of 7.5 out of 10 with 320+ GRE and one strong research or industry recommendation puts an Indian STEM applicant in a competitive band. Below that, apply broadly across US public flagships.

University of Maryland, College Park Campus, Facilities and Student Life

UMD occupies a 1,340-acre suburban campus in College Park, Maryland, with the DC Metro Green Line connecting students to central Washington in 25 minutes.

  • Location and transport: The College Park-U of Md Metro station sits on the north edge of campus; UMD’s Shuttle-UM buses run free for students across nearby neighbourhoods
  • Housing: On-campus graduate housing at Graduate Hills and Graduate Gardens costs USD 900 to USD 1,400 per month; the university does not guarantee graduate housing
  • Facilities: The A. James Clark School operates a Quantum Materials Center; McKeldin Library holds four million volumes and 24-hour study space
  • Indian community: The Indian Students Association and Maryland Hindu Student Council host over 1,000 Indian graduates each year
  • Dining: South Campus Diner offers halal and vegetarian stations; multiple Indian restaurants operate on Route 1 within walking distance

What Indian students say: The Metro link to DC opens up federal internships that inland campuses cannot match. Winter travel to campus needs planning because Route 1 apartments are the affordable choice but the shuttle can be crowded in peak hours.

University of Maryland, College Park Scholarships 2027

UMD funds Indian graduate students primarily through Graduate Assistantships, with a smaller pool of merit fellowships. No named scholarship targets Indian nationality directly, though Fulbright and India-specific external awards apply.

THE Subject Rankings 2026 place UMD at #63 in Computer Science and #54 in Education, while ARWU 2025 subject rankings put Atmospheric Science at #14 globally and Economics at #19.

Key insight: The US News #29 national rank and #11 top public rank matter more for US employer recognition than the QS position, because most American recruiters read US News as the reference ranking.

University of Maryland, College Park Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UMD graduate placements skew strongly to business, engineering, and computer science, with Smith School MBAs earning the highest median starting salaries on campus.

  • MBA employment within 3 months: 81.8% of Smith School MBA graduates accepted offers within 90 days
  • Median MBA base salary: USD 120,446 (INR 115.36 lakh)
  • MS Business median starting: USD 100,600 (INR 96.31 lakh)
  • MS Engineering median starting: USD 91,500 (INR 87.60 lakh)
  • MS Computer Science median starting: USD 91,500 (INR 87.60 lakh)
  • Top recruiting sectors: Federal contractors, defence, cloud technology, and financial services concentrated in the DC-Baltimore corridor
  • Career support: University Career Center runs employer treks to Northern Virginia; STEM masters qualify for 36-month OPT extension

Insider note: Indian graduates from UMD’s CS and Data Science programmes routinely land Amazon Web Services, Capital One, and Booz Allen Hamilton roles. Proximity to federal contractors adds security-clearance-adjacent employers that inland schools cannot match.

University of Maryland, College Park vs Peer Universities

Peers below are US public flagships in the same US News tier for public universities, plus one national private option Indian applicants often weigh against UMD.

UniversityQS Rank 2027CD Study Abroad 2026Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh)Differentiator
University of Maryland, College Park#252#10228,740 / 27.51 lakhDC federal-contractor pipeline
Purdue University#89#6329,600 / 28.34 lakhStronger core engineering brand
Penn State University#87#7836,000 / 34.47 lakhLarger alumni network in industry
Ohio State University#101#6634,800 / 33.32 lakhBroader Midwest recruiter base
University of Pittsburgh#159#11136,000 / 34.47 lakhHealth sciences and CS focus

UMD stands out on location: no peer above sits within 15 kilometres of a federal capital or offers direct Metro access to a top-five US employer market. The masters tuition is also the lowest in this comparison set.

For Indian applicants targeting Beltway defence, cloud, or policy careers, UMD is the strongest public option at this fee point. The trade-off is a QS rank lower than its US News and ARWU positions suggest.

Total investment sits near INR 55 lakh for a two-year MS against a median starting salary of INR 87 lakh in engineering and computer science, giving a payback window under two working years on OPT. The F-1 visa STEM OPT extension pathway is the strongest Indian-specific advantage here, unlocking 36 months of US work rights.

UMD is not the right fit for candidates chasing a top-100 QS brand or a compact urban campus. Purdue University offers a stronger core-engineering ranking and comparable fees for that profile.

University of Maryland, College Park FAQs

Ques. Does UMD waive the GRE for MS Computer Science applicants?

Ans. The Department of Computer Science at UMD has made GRE scores optional for MS Computer Science applications since 2021, and the waiver continues for the Fall 2027 cycle. Indian applicants can strengthen a no-GRE application through strong CGPA, quantitative coursework grades, and technical work references. GMAT remains required only for Smith School MBA.

Ques. How many hours per week can Indian students work at UMD?

Ans. F-1 visa holders at UMD can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the academic year and full-time during official breaks. On-campus roles include graduate assistantships, library jobs, and dining services. Off-campus employment requires Curricular Practical Training authorisation after one academic year of full-time study.

Ques. What is the application fee at University of Maryland, College Park graduate school?

Ans. The UMD Graduate School application fee is USD 75 per programme (INR 7,181 approximately) for the 2027 cycle. Fee waivers exist for McNair Scholars, Project 1000 applicants, and some conference attendees, but not for standard Indian international applicants. Applicants submit fees online through the ApplyWeb portal.

Ques. Which Indian banks provide education loans for UMD admits?

Ans. UMD is on the approved lists of SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, and ICICI Bank for education loans up to INR 60 lakh unsecured and higher with collateral. Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing also lend without co-signers to admitted Indian students. Loan sanction usually needs the I-20 first.

Ques. Can dependants accompany Indian students to UMD on F-2 visas?

Ans. Spouses and children under 21 of F-1 holders qualify for F-2 dependant visas at UMD. Applicants must show additional financial proof of USD 8,000 per year for a spouse and USD 4,000 per child in the I-20 issuance stage. F-2 visa holders cannot work in the US, though children can enrol in local schools.

Ques. What is the WES evaluation requirement for Indian degrees at UMD?

Ans. Most UMD graduate programmes accept scanned transcripts at application but require a WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation before final admission. Indian applicants should order the WES evaluation eight weeks before the application deadline. Original transcripts must reach WES in sealed envelopes from the issuing Indian university.

Ques. Are there conditional admission routes at University of Maryland for lower English scores?

Ans. Applicants scoring below the TOEFL 96 or IELTS 7.0 threshold may receive conditional admission tied to Maryland English Institute coursework. Full graduate enrolment starts after clearing MEI-required English courses. The pathway adds one semester to programme timelines and additional cost, so most Indian applicants aim for direct admission scores.

Ques. What is the refund policy if an admitted Indian student withdraws?

Ans. UMD refunds 100% of tuition if the student withdraws before classes begin, dropping to 80% in week two and 60% in week three of the semester. Mandatory fees and the international student fee are non-refundable after enrolment. Visa denial cases receive full tuition refund with an official denial letter submitted to the Bursar.

  • There is only one campus which is huge, vibrant and full of energy. It offers excellent facilities, including one of the largest university libraries, modern sports complexes and health and counselling centres and various recreational spaces.
  • The campus hosts exciting annual events and fests, such as Maryland Day and Homecoming Art Attack, which bring together students from all disciplines.

  • My college, University of Maryland, has a main campus called University of Maryland-College Park. Other campuses such as Global Campus, Baltimore County, and Shady Grove are affiliates of UMD but not the main school itself.
  • There are three libraries: McKeldin, Hornbake, and STEM Library. We have numerous sports facilities including an outdoor bouldering and climbing wall, an indoor climbing wall, an outdoor swimming pool, an indoor natatorium, several basketball, volleyball, squash, badminton, racquetball, tennis, and pickleball courts. We also have two gym facilities, one at Eppley Recreational Center and the other at Ritchie Coliseum with multiple levels and several machines and dumbbells. Additionally, at the Student Stamp Union, one can find numerous billiard tables, bowling alleys, and gaming televisions. Recently, gaming rooms have also opened at Ritchie Coliseum for e-sports.
  • There is also the University Health Center, which is the first point of contact in case of an emergency, and utilizes the insurance that is mandatory for all students. Our university also provides several mental health and distress-relief options including the Mental Coalition Club, counseling center with professional therapy, and survivor support.
  • Major campus events include Maryland Day, Homecoming, First Look Fair, Second Look Fair, and gameday tailgates for football and basketball. Popular events for the Indian community include Mock Shaadi, Blackout Bhangra, Diwali, and Holi celebrations.
  • Extracurricular activities cannot be summarized in a list. Because we are proud of our enormous student body, there is a club for every interest out there. And if there is not, it is very easy to form a club by finding other like-minded members.

Fees

  • Fees are charged in a mix of credit-based and semester-wise basis. Taking lower than 12 credits makes a student part-time, while there is a flat rate for 12+ credits. According to the Undergraduate Tuition & Fees website, the total tuition and mandatory fees for a semester total to $20,593. The mandatory fees include the costs of athletics, shuttle bus, student union, student activities, recreation services, student sustainability, and student counseling center. If enrolled in a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) such as Business, Engineering, and Computer Science, students pay an additional $1,545.30, bringing the total fees per semester to $22,138.30.
  • Monthly expenses are highly variable as it is contingent on standards of living that a student wishes to maintain. Rent ranges from $650-1400 per month depending on whether you have a shared room or a personal room and the total number of bedrooms in the apartment. Additionally, spending time with friends, going to DC, and going on dates could cost higher. If you are living on campus (which is mandatory as a freshman and optional and limited for later years), you are required to purchase a full dining plan, which currently costs $2,426.09 for a semester. There are also block meal options, allowing you to purchase 25, 50, 100, and 150 meals which cost lower. In my experience, I spend around $1000-1200 a month which included rent, utilities, meal plan, and miscellaneous expenses, which results in a total cost of $27,000 per semester. The cost of a flight to and back from India has not been included, which usually costs about $1600 for a round trip, again contingent on when the flight is being booked.

  • There is technically only one main campus in College Park, but there is another branch in Baltimore County, which isn't as good.
  • UMD has the Hornbake Library & McKeldin Library. The Eppley Recreation Centre has all the infrastructure for most of the sports you can think of. The University Health Centre has an acute care service where you can go for any injury you might have gotten.
  • Popular events include Maryland Day, which is a big annual fair; Homecoming Week, which is very happening with a lot of back-to-back events; and various cultural and professional clubs like the MUN, Robotics, and Hyperloop, a club and also a design club.
  • There is a group that meets up to play soccer whenever; you can join that group in the groupMe app. Many of the sport enthusiast groups are through the GroupMe app. If you want to join any community (sports or cultural), you will find it there, and anyone can join it and stay posted on any events these groups might have.
  • There is a Graduate Labour Union (GLU) that you can join if you want to represent the voice of the grad student demands.

Fees

  • 1 Course: USD 4,146.00
  • 10 Courses: USD 41,460.00
  • Mandatory fees per semester: USD 690
  • Fees are credit based so per course, which have to be registered semester-wise.
  • The transportation for buses is free all around town. Metro, on the other hand, is paid and takes USD 4 to go to Washington, DC. My monthly groceries come to be around USD 60 per month but that is because I use the dining hall more.

  • The university has a lot of campuses. The library is open most of the time and hosts many events. ReWell is for sports and has a sports facility. The university hosts football games and basketball games. For which the tickets are free for the students. Sports are the highlight.

  • There are many events which happened, especially during the first week, there was silent the school painting, events, bowling events, and so much more. It was so fun and we could mingle with other people. The facilities available on campus are a lot the library. There is a full fledged recreation centre and of course good medical services as well, the major even would be the homecoming week where it was like a famous football match, which happened between the university of Maryland and the University of Southern California, apart from that there is Maryland and so much other more events.
  • Never was something called the first look fair where all the student organisations and clubs came up with stalls and introduced their clubs to everyone, and we could join by signing up at the event.

Fees

  • The tuition fee is $4,146 per course and during the 2-year masters degree, we will need to complete 10 courses. So in total it would be $41,460 (just the tuition fee).
  • I am staying in an apartment near campus and the rent for a shared room I am paying is $610 (I got it for an early bird discount). The minimum rent for an apartment is around $500 on an average and for a private room it is $900.
  • The fees are charged semester-wise. For my particular course, I should take 9 credits per semester, which is 3 courses, so I pay $12,438 per semester.
  • Transportation is completely free around campus. I mean the shuttle bus to the university and nearby places. If you want to go in the metro, its chargeable; on weekdays it's around $5 and on weekends around $2.5.
  • Grocery shops are very limited around this area, with only 2 supermarkets. However, you can order online. On average, the monthly groceries for me are around $100. There is also a good Indian store near the university (20 minutes by bus).

Overview

I chose this university as this university is a public Ivy League school and is well reputed, plus the course it offered was among the top 10 schools in the USA. As stated earlier the program was a perfect blend of technical and non-technical subjects, something that I was looking for.

Most graduate programs at the University of Maryland require a minimum DET score of 115. Undergraduate programs at the University of Maryland typically don't need a DET score. However, you can explore the University of Maryland courses to learn more about the curriculum, fees, and other details.

The University of Maryland offers accommodation facilities for international students. The university offers apartment-style, suite-style, traditional-style housing. Students can also choose from single-gender housing, mixed-gender housing, and gender-inclusive housing.
