Merit-based tuition scholarships are awarded by individual departments at admission, and international graduate students remain eligible for research and teaching assistantships. Indian applicants should also review the F-1 study visa requirements and the post-study OPT pathway for STEM courses.

University of Rochester Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants to Rochester’s graduate programmes are assessed on academics, English proficiency and credential verification, with additional test requirements at Simon and select Hajim departments.

  • Academic eligibility (PG): Four-year bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, equivalent to 65 to 70% or CGPA 7.0/10 for Indian applicants (recommended).
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.5 minimum for most graduate programmes; Duolingo English Test also accepted. Hajim ECE recommends TOEFL 100 and IELTS 7.5. Verify programme-specific minimums at rochester.edu test requirements.
  • Credential verification: WES course-by-course evaluation is required for all Indian bachelor’s degrees, confirming equivalency to a US four-year degree.
  • Standardised tests: GRE requirements vary by programme; GMAT or GRE is expected for Simon MBA and most Simon MS programmes.

Undergraduate applicants from India need Class 12 with a competitive GPA around 3.0/4.0, roughly 70% and above, plus TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 7.0 for the UG cohort.

Key insight: The English test waiver at Rochester applies only to applicants who have completed at least three years of full-time in-person postsecondary study in an English-speaking country. English-medium instruction at an Indian university alone does not qualify.

University of Rochester Acceptance Rate 2027

The overall University of Rochester acceptance rate is 30% (estimated), positioning it as a selective private research university where roughly one in three applicants receives an offer. Graduate acceptance rates vary widely by department, with Hajim Engineering programmes and Simon MBA typically more competitive than Arts and Sciences masters.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
202630% (estimated)Stable
202532% (estimated)Stable

Simon MBA typically admits between 30% and 40% of applicants, while Hajim MS programmes in Data Science and Computer Science can be tighter given Indian applicant volume.

Reality check: A 30% acceptance rate at Rochester should not be read as an easy target for Indian applicants, as the Indian applicant pool for STEM masters is highly self-selected and departments cap Indian intake to preserve cohort diversity.

Rochester stands out for the combined depth of Simon Business School, Hajim optics and engineering, and Eastman music under one federal ID, giving Indian students access to cross-registration and joint-degree pathways rare at a mid-sized private university.

The University of Rochester is a strong fit for Indian applicants who want a STEM-designated masters at a research-intensive US private university with a manageable cost of living. A Hajim or Simon MS graduate paying INR 65 to 72 lakh in tuition can target a median starting salary of INR 76 to 120 lakh, giving a payback horizon well inside the STEM OPT window and the F-1 visa validity period.

Rochester is not the right pick for Indian students prioritising a large metro location or fully-funded masters, since only PhD offers reliably cover full tuition and stipend. Applicants seeking urban tech-hub proximity should also compare Boston University or Northeastern University before committing.

  • The college has three campuses; the river campus is main with cs, ds, business school, optics, etc
  • Second is medical centre, and third is Eastman, which is for music and arts
  • All facilities are available at my campus (river campus). There are more than 5 libraries, sports: badminton, gym, squash, basketball, football field and so much more. medical services are present in all campuses, especially for university students
  • meliora weekend is a huge campus festival that happens annually, There are many clubs one can join according to their interest (mostly undergrads, since grad students dont have much time)
  • There are many organizations that make you feel at home, like international student organisations and the Rochester Indian Association. There are also sports teams (mostly undergrads) and many cultural events organized by respective organisations. Such as RIA does indian events, ISO does events for Chinese, Indian, etc students

Fees

  • After 40% waiver on tuition fee, college fee is around $12000 per semester.
  • Health insurance annually is around $3000.
  • Fee is semester-wise. You can also pay semester-wise fee in 2-3 installments
  • Graduate housing is around $550-$650 (some have heat included and wifi not included, some have wifi included but heat not included in rent)
  • No expense for transportation; the university shuttle is very convenient unless have to go somewhere far
  • Monthly expense: $615 rent + $50-$100 groceries + $80-$100 extras.

  • They have two campus, one is called the River campus and the other one is in downtown Rochester which houses the Eastman School of Music.

  • The area near the campus has medicine centers and hospitals where UoR students can get medical care.

  • There are tons of sports facilities also available on campus such as an indoor swimming pool, tennis, squash, football, soccer, gym, etc.

Fees

  • Tuition Fee is about $110,000 and monthly expenses come out to about a $1000 ($550 for rent including utilities, $400 for groceries and $50 for public transportation).
  • The fee can be paid semester wise or all at one go. Many times the fee would be reduced if you have a merit scholarship and plenty of on campus jobs are also available to help with expenses.

Campus Life

  • It has 3 campuses: River campus, Medical Campus and Music Campus
  • It has Library, sports arena, Gym, Interfaith prayer places, Medical centre, etc
  • Multiple events used to happen almost every week; I am not sure about the names.
  • There are multiple student organisations, multiple clubs, etc. A lot can be done in terms of extracurriculars; while writing this, I just came from the gym.

Fees

  • You will get a proper fee structure breakdown here:
  • I live in on-campus housing, which is $1150 for a 2-bedroom apartment including electricity. The price ranges from $1100 to $1800 for a 2-bedroom apartment.
  • Apart from that, monthly expense including wifi, phone bills, groceries, Eating outside, etc will cost around $500 per month if done in a controlled way

  1. River Campus and
  2. Eastman School of Music.
  • River Campus is the main campus with a football field, gym, swimming pool, baseball field, tennis courts, basketball courts etcetera. Dandelion Day and Meliora Weekend are two exciting times with guest speakers, food trucks, games on the quad etcetera.
  • There are a few cultural student organizations such as the Hindu Student Association, Muslim Student Association, among others - which allow the opportunity to meet other Indians!

  1. Tuition $65000
  2. Housing $11000
  3. Meal Plan $4000
  4. Health Insurance $2000
  • Fees are charged semester-wise (for the Fall and Spring semesters separately).

Overview

I chose Boston University because it is a prestigious graduate school and has great research and a great BME program. I wanted to live in Boston because I have lots of friends there, I like the city, and it's close to my family. It is also a great area for getting a job in biotech after I graduate. My experience as a graduate student at BU has been pretty good. It can be tough to start a master's degree without a lot of knowledge of what it will be like, but my advisor is helpful, and I have taken a lot of interesting classes. Yes, I had to submit letters of recommendation for my graduate program from professors in my undergraduate program.

I don't participate in much being a graduate student, but there are lots of options and nice buildings on campus.
