University of California, Berkeley Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
UC Berkeley applies transparent academic and English thresholds for Indian applicants, with grade cutoffs stated in US GPA terms and Indian-scale equivalents summarised below.
Postgraduate Requirements
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (~60% in Indian marking or CGPA 6.0/10); competitive PG applicants typically present 70% and above or CGPA 7.5/10.
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT minimum 90 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS Academic minimum 7.0 overall.
- English waiver: Applicants holding a degree from an English-speaking country, a US institution, or completing one year of US coursework with grades of B or better are exempt.
- Standardised tests: GRE required or recommended by many STEM programmes, GMAT for Haas MBA and MFE; policy varies by department, verify each programme page.
Undergraduate Requirements
- Academic: Indian Class 12 completion from CBSE, ISC or a recognised state board with strong marks (85% and above recommended for engineering and Haas admits).
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT minimum 90 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo English Test 115.
- English waiver: Waived after 3+ years of instruction with English as the sole language of instruction, applicable to most CBSE and ISC applicants on request.
- Standardised tests: UC Berkeley is test-blind for undergraduate admissions; SAT and ACT scores are neither accepted nor considered.
Key insight: The Berkeley UG test-blind policy is a real advantage for Indian Class 12 applicants without SAT scores; academic rigour, essays and extracurricular achievement carry the full weight of the review.
University of California, Berkeley Acceptance Rate 2027
UC Berkeley’s overall undergraduate acceptance rate stood at ~11.4% for the 2025-26 admissions cycle, one of the lowest among US public research universities. The university does not publish a separate figure for international undergraduates, though the practical rate for Indian applicants is estimated at 5-8% (estimated) given the non-resident applicant pool.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2025-26 | ~11.4% | Stable |
| 2024-25 | ~11.7% | Slightly down |
| 2023-24 | ~12.4% | Trending down |
Berkeley’s admit rate has held below 13% for the past five cycles, driven by rising international applications and a fixed non-resident enrolment cap set at the UC system level. Graduate programme acceptance rates vary widely by department, with EECS and Haas MBA sitting at or below the undergraduate figure.
Reality check: An Indian applicant to Berkeley should treat it as a stretch school regardless of profile; competitive UG admits typically present 90%+ in Class 12, strong olympiad or research work, and clear leadership evidence.

University of California, Berkeley Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Berkeley graduates are among the most sought-after in the US technology and finance job market, with the Career Center reporting strong employment outcomes across the College of Engineering, Haas, and the College of Letters & Science.
- Employment within 6 months: ~85% of Berkeley bachelor’s graduates report employment or graduate study within six months (Berkeley Career Center First Destination Survey, market baseline).
- Median starting salary (bachelor’s): $90,000 (₹78.7 lakh) (market median across STEM cohorts, verify Career Center annual report).
- Top recruiters (representative): Google, Apple, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce, Deloitte, McKinsey, Goldman Sachs.
- Haas MBA median post-MBA salary: $155,000 (₹135.6 lakh) (market median, verify at Haas Employment Report).
- Post-study work visa: Indian graduates on F-1 qualify for 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension for qualifying STEM degrees, totalling 36 months of US work authorisation.
Insider note: Indian graduates from Berkeley EECS, MEng and Master of Analytics routinely land Bay Area tech offers within the first three months of OPT; Haas graduates cluster into consulting, product management and Bay Area startups.
University of California, Berkeley vs Peer Universities
Berkeley is compared here with its closest US public-research peer (UCLA), a private Ivy-tier neighbour (Stanford), a Boston tech giant (MIT) and one Canadian counterpart (University of Toronto) that Indian applicants routinely weigh against Berkeley.
| University | QS World 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / ₹ INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of California, Berkeley | #=20 | #8 of 824 | $41,175 / ₹36.0 lakh | Top public research university with Bay Area recruiter access. |
| Stanford University | #6 | NA | ~$62,000 / ~₹54.3 lakh (market median) | Private, entrepreneurship-heavy, deeper alumni funding networks. |
| Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) | #1 | NA | ~$61,000 / ~₹53.4 lakh (market median) | Global #1 for engineering, East Coast recruiter access. |
| University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) | #42 | NA | ~$34,000 / ~₹29.8 lakh (market median) | Sister UC campus, lower non-resident PG fees, strong LA industry links. |
| University of Toronto | #17 | NA | ~CAD 62,000 / ~₹40 lakh (market median) | Canadian PGWP pathway and lower total cost. |
Berkeley stands out for pairing sub-$45,000 non-resident graduate tuition with Bay Area recruiter access, a combination its private-tier peers cannot match on price and its public-tier peers cannot match on location. For Indian applicants who value tech industry proximity, Berkeley delivers the strongest cost-to-outcome ratio in the US top-10.
University of California, Berkeley is the right fit for Indian applicants targeting a top-10 US STEM or business degree at public-tier tuition, with the Bay Area on the doorstep for internships and full-time roles. Budget $85,000 to $115,000 (₹74.4 lakh to ₹100.6 lakh) per year against a $90,000 median bachelor’s starting salary and $155,000 median Haas MBA salary, with the 36-month STEM OPT window as the primary Indian-specific advantage on the US F-1 visa.
It is not the right fit for applicants who need substantial merit aid at undergraduate level, or those uncomfortable with Berkeley’s sub-12% admit rate and cost-of-living exposure; UCLA or the University of Toronto offer a more forgiving cost profile with similar recruiter access.
University of California, Berkeley FAQs
Ques. Does UC Berkeley waive the IELTS for CBSE and ISC applicants?
Ans. Yes, Berkeley waives the English proficiency requirement at undergraduate level when the applicant has completed three or more years of instruction with English as the sole language of instruction, which covers most CBSE and ISC applicants. The waiver is requested on the application; Berkeley may still ask for proof of medium of instruction. Graduate applicants receive the waiver only if they hold a degree from an English-speaking country or a US institution.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at University of California, Berkeley?
Ans. Yes, F-1 international students are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during term and full-time during official breaks. Off-campus work requires prior authorisation through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) tied to a course, or Optional Practical Training (OPT) after the first academic year. The Berkeley International Office handles all work-authorisation paperwork and briefings.
Ques. What is the application fee for Indian applicants at University of California, Berkeley?
Ans. Undergraduate applicants pay $95 (₹8,313) per campus applied to on the UC application, which covers Berkeley and any additional UC campuses selected. Graduate applicants pay $155 (₹13,563) per Berkeley programme. Fee waivers are available for US-resident applicants demonstrating financial need but are not extended to international applicants in most cases.
Ques. Is the GRE required for graduate programmes at UC Berkeley?
Ans. The GRE requirement varies by graduate programme and has changed materially since 2020. Many STEM masters and doctoral programmes made the GRE optional or waived it altogether; others such as physics, chemistry and select engineering doctoral programmes still expect scores. Indian applicants should check each department’s admissions page directly rather than relying on the graduate-division-wide policy.
Ques. How does UC Berkeley verify Indian transcripts and degrees?
Ans. Berkeley accepts institutional transcripts uploaded directly during the application review stage. Admitted students are required to submit official, sealed transcripts and degree certificates to the Office of the Registrar or the Graduate Division. Some departments additionally ask for a WES or IERF course-by-course evaluation before enrolment, particularly where the Indian degree structure differs from the US four-year model.
Ques. Are Indian education loan lenders comfortable with University of California, Berkeley?
Ans. Yes, Berkeley is on the pre-approved lists of every major Indian public and private bank and NBFC that fund overseas education. HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, ICICI Bank, SBI, Bank of Baroda, Prodigy Finance and MPower Financing all fund Berkeley admits with loan tickets typically covering full tuition plus a portion of living expenses. Collateral requirements vary and are typically waived for STEM masters programmes at Berkeley given placement history.
Ques. What are the dependent visa rules for spouses of Indian students at UC Berkeley?
Ans. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 of an F-1 student qualify for an F-2 dependent visa. F-2 spouses cannot legally work in the US and cannot enrol in full-time degree study, though part-time recreational courses are permitted. Financial proof for dependents must be added on top of the primary applicant’s I-20 requirement, typically $12,000-$15,000 (₹10.5-13.1 lakh) per year per dependent.
Ques. Are conditional offers issued by UC Berkeley for Indian applicants?
Ans. Berkeley does not routinely issue conditional offers of the kind common in the UK or Australia. Undergraduate admits are conditional only on completing Class 12 with the marks and subject profile represented in the application, and on submitting final official transcripts. Graduate admits are conditional on completing the in-progress bachelor’s degree with the represented GPA and on any programme-specific coursework prerequisites.

The University of California is one of the best universities in the world and also quite popular for its study programmes and the campus . The admission process is hard and can be confusing sometime but if you have good knowledge and have talked to any student of this college earler then you will not find any problem. Firstly you have to give the GMAT exam in which you have to score more than 720 marks out of 800 to get a seat there and then have to apply for admission online. You can apply for admission online yet you have any problem than instead of visiting any consultant you must go and talk to a alumni of the college.
Campus Life
Campus life was not so fun due to COVID classes were held online without any interactions with students . There were a lot of indian on the campus and it felt like awesome. The infrastructure of the college is marvelous the buildings are beautiful, the libraries are gorgeous and very well maintained. Sports facult is great you do have regular sports fest with other colleges like Stanford, etc. I've not been a part of any club or society.
Overview
Had a good course structure . Labs had good research going on , professor were great
Overview
UC Berkeley is ranked extremely highly. They have a great engineering program as well as Nuclear Engineering. The location was amazing in terms of weather as well as prospective internships in silicon valley. It also had many great programs so that I could take more classes, and as such I am minoring in Environmental Policy and Economics. Academics can be challenging as you are surrounded by some of the brightest people. However, studying hard as well as rounding yourself off as a person can be very easy if you put your mind to it. The university offers every chance possible to do so
Overview
I wanted to be close to the city. It was has a really good reputation academically.
Fees
65,000 dollars annually
Overview
I got into Cornell as well but I chose Berkeley because I wanted to be near a city and in warmer weather and a school which is more fun. I chose to major in Econ because Berkeley has very highly acclaimed economics professors. I have also taken many legal studies classes because Berkeley has a culture and history of activism and I really liked all the professors.
Fees
60,000 Usd per year
Overview
The reason I chose this particular college is that the location of this university is Ideal and ideal programs were provided for my major, ideally, I also admired the chill atmosphere of UC Berkley and indeed am proud of my decision.
Fees
The fees are very open and a lot of aid is provided, they also price match the books so if at any campus the price is lower they match it.
Overview
I chose UC Berkeley because of its location and ideal temperature. It is one of the more distinguished schools and more students are accepted into Medical school when applying with UC Berkeley as your alma mater.
Fees
Usually, Labs have like a $10-30 fee for any broken glassware during the class. Obviously Tuition. And you are required to spend a week in advance at the school before classes in order to attend something known as GBO (Golden Bear Orientation) which I honestly a bit drew out.
Overview
I chose this particular college for many reasons. I would say that I mainly chose because I liked the weather in California and because and I felt it would be in a good state and city where I could further develop my dreams and goals.
Fees
I would have to say that they were always upfront about the fees. I don't really remember what my fees were, but they were lower than other colleges.
Overview
I thought I would get the best education here because of its ranking and faculty. I also liked the variety of classes offered and the social climate. There was a good selection of different organizations I would be able to join.
Fees
There are tuition and fees for late charges like dropping or adding classes after the deadline. The gym membership is included in the tuition. There are not really any other fees.
Overview
The English program is ranked very high and I was accepted. I received higher financial aid here than my other top choice, and the school has a great reputation. The housing is expensive, but if you look hard it won't break the bank. Professors have great reputations as well, great for letters of recommendation.
Fees
While there are a lot of different fees, I had a full tuition/fees scholarship so I'm not too familiar with them. If your money doesn't release when everyone else's is, you need to wait in the huge financial aid line to get the process started for them to trigger it manually. I had that experience. The line is managed well though, they set you up with text alerts so you can leave and come back in time.
