The Common App opened its 2026-27 application on August 1, 2026. Indian students targeting Fall 2027 US admissions can start filing now. The platform confirmed the seven essay prompts on February 27, 2026. It carries the same prompts as the previous cycle.
- Over 1,100 US colleges are accepting Common App submissions today.
- The Activities section is now renamed Activities and Experiences. The leadership title field is optional.
- Early Decision and Early Action deadlines start on November 1, 2026.
August 1 is the sole launch date each year. Class of 2027 applicants can now push drafts through account rollover. Indian applicants have exactly three months to Early Decision cut-offs. SAT slots and transcripts must line up in the same window.

What Changed in the 2026-27 Common App
The Common App kept its seven essay prompts intact this cycle. The organisation confirmed the decision on February 27, 2026. The 650-word personal statement limit stays the same.
The biggest structural change sits inside the Activities section. It is now titled Activities and Experiences. The leadership or position title field is optional this cycle. Applicants can log family responsibilities, informal work and hobbies more naturally.
Key Insight: The Activities rename helps Indian applicants without formal club titles. Family caregiving, tuition income and self-taught coding projects now count too. That widens what a strong extracurricular profile can look like on paper.
How Many US Colleges Accept the Common App
The Common App covers over 1,100 colleges worldwide, per the platform. This includes every Ivy League school and most flagship state universities. Cornell and the University of Southern California accept Common App only.
Most others accept either the Common App or the Coalition App. A single account pushes one essay to all listed colleges. Each college adds its own supplemental questions on top.

Key Deadlines for Fall 2027 Indian Applicants
The three-month runway to first deadlines is now live. The table covers standard windows across most top US colleges.
| Round | Deadline | Binding? |
|---|---|---|
| Early Decision I | November 1, 2026 | Yes |
| Early Action | November 1, 2026 | No |
| Early Decision II | January 1-15, 2027 | Yes |
| Regular Decision | January 1-15, 2027 | No |
Deadlines usually close at 11:59 pm local college time. For East Coast colleges, that is 9:29 am IST next day. Indian students on the West Coast route get a three-hour buffer.
Key Caveat: Early Decision is binding. If admitted, an applicant has to withdraw all others and enrol. Use ED only when one college is a clear first choice.
How Should Indian Students Line Up SAT and Common App?
The College Board runs eight SAT test dates through the 2026-27 cycle. The first sitting is on August 22, 2026. Scores from that date arrive in early September. That is the safest date for the November 1 rounds.
Indian applicants cannot sit the SAT on Sundays. All 2026-27 SAT dates fall on Saturdays. The exam is fully digital through the Bluebook app. Check the full SAT 2026-27 Test Dates before booking.
Transcripts, recommendation letters and TOEFL or IELTS scores need parallel scheduling. Most Indian schools process transcripts fastest between August and October.
What Indian Applicants Should Do This Week
The first ninety days set the pace for the cycle. Account setup, college shortlisting and essay drafts should close by end-August.
- Create a Common App account and add target colleges to your dashboard.
- Lock in an August 22 or October 3 SAT date if needed.
- Request transcripts and predicted grades from your school counsellor this week.
- Line up two recommenders and share deadlines with them by mid-August.
- Finalise the personal essay draft by September 30, 2026.
Indian applicants who cross these milestones by month-end enter October lighter. The November 1, 2026 Early Decision wall is now three months away. Ivy League and top-30 aspirants have to sprint the next four weeks.
Keep an Eye On: First hard deadline is November 1, 2026 for Early Decision and Early Action. The next SAT date is August 22, 2026. Scores reach colleges in early September.
