NEET MDS 2027 Exam Structure: Part A and Part B

The NEET MDS 2027 question paper is divided into two parts. Part A covers basic and pre-clinical subjects, while Part B covers clinical subjects. Each part has a separate time limit. You must finish Part A before moving to Part B.

Section Questions Total Marks Time Allotted Subject Type
Part A10040075 minutesBasic and Pre-clinical Sciences (7 subjects)
Part B140560105 minutesClinical Sciences (10 subjects)
Total240960180 minutes17 subjects (BDS curriculum)

Part B carries more marks and more questions than Part A. You get about 45 seconds per question on average across both sections. This is not a lot of time, so speed and accuracy both matter in NEET MDS 2027.

Each part has a fixed time limit. You cannot carry over unused time from Part A to Part B. Once Part A time is over, you must move on to Part B.

NEET MDS 2027 Total Questions and Total Marks

NEET MDS 2027 has a total of 240 MCQs worth 960 marks. Each question carries 4 marks. There are no optional questions — all 240 are compulsory. There is no choice between sections.

Here is the marks calculation at a glance:

Component Details
Total MCQs240
Marks per Question+4
Maximum Score240 × 4 = 960 marks
Part A Questions and Marks100 questions × 4 = 400 marks
Part B Questions and Marks140 questions × 4 = 560 marks
Negative Marking–1 per wrong answer
Minimum Score (all wrong)–240 marks

Part B carries 140 marks more than Part A. This means clinical subjects have a bigger impact on your total score. Strong performance in Part B can significantly improve your rank in NEET MDS 2027.

NEET MDS 2027 Marking Scheme

The NEET MDS 2027 marking scheme has three outcomes for every question. You get +4 for a correct answer, lose –1 for a wrong answer, and get 0 for an unattempted question. There is no partial marking.

Response Type Marks
Correct Answer+4
Incorrect Answer–1
Unattempted / Skipped0
More than one option selected0

The marking ratio is 4:1. This means one wrong answer cancels out the marks from one-fourth of a correct answer. You need to answer 5 correct questions to compensate for every 4 wrong ones. Random guessing can push your score down quickly.

Here is how negative marking affects your total score at different accuracy levels:

Questions Attempted Correct Wrong Net Score
24022020860
23020030770
21018030690
20016040600
18015030570

Most top rankers in NEET MDS aim for at least 80% accuracy. If you are not sure about a question, it is better to skip it than to guess.

NEET MDS 2027 Question Paper Format

All 240 questions in NEET MDS 2027 are in Single Best Response (SBR) format. Each question has 4 options (A, B, C, D) and only one is correct. There are no match-the-following, assertion-reason, or multi-select questions.

Key features of the question paper format:

  • All questions are in English only. No regional language option is available.
  • Questions are a mix of direct recall, concept-based, and clinical scenario types.
  • Clinical scenario questions describe a patient case and ask you to identify diagnosis, treatment, or drug of choice.
  • Questions from both Part A and Part B appear separately within their respective sections.
  • You can navigate freely between questions within each part.
  • You can mark questions for review and return to them before the section time runs out.
  • You can change your answer at any time before the section ends.
  • A rough sheet or scrap paper is provided at the exam centre. You cannot bring your own.

In the last few years, NEET MDS has included more clinical scenario-based questions in Part B. These test your application of knowledge rather than pure memory. You need to practise clinical case-based MCQs regularly to do well in Part B.

NEET MDS 2027 Cutoff and Marks vs Rank

The NEET MDS cutoff is the minimum score needed to qualify for MDS counselling. NBEMS sets the qualifying percentile for each category. The expected cutoff marks for NEET MDS 2027 based on previous years are shown below.

Category Qualifying Percentile Expected Cutoff Score (2027)
General / Unreserved (UR)50th PercentileAround 400–450
SC / ST40th PercentileAround 300–350
OBC40th PercentileAround 300–350
PwBD (General)45th PercentileAround 350–400

Expected cutoff scores are based on previous years’ trends. Actual NEET MDS 2027 cutoff will depend on paper difficulty, number of candidates, and seat availability.

Just qualifying the cutoff is not enough for a seat in a top government dental college. To get MDS admission at institutes like Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) Delhi or PGIMER Chandigarh, you need to score well above the qualifying cutoff. How to Prepare for NEET MDS 2027 Based on Exam Pattern

Understanding the NEET MDS 2027 exam pattern helps you decide where to put your energy. Here is a subject-wise and section-wise preparation approach.

Prioritise Part B Subjects

Part B carries 560 out of 960 marks. If you are going to appear for NEET MDS 2027, your preparation should start with the high-weightage clinical subjects.

  • Focus on Prosthodontics, Conservative Dentistry, Periodontics, Pedodontics, Orthodontics, and Oral Medicine — each of these has around 14 questions.
  • Together, these 6 subjects account for roughly 84 questions and 336 marks.
  • Practise clinical scenario MCQs regularly, as these now make up a big portion of Part B.

Do Not Ignore Part A

Part A has 100 questions for 400 marks. Many candidates make the mistake of focusing only on clinical subjects and losing marks in basic sciences.

  • Dental Anatomy and Oral Histology are predictable and high-scoring. Revise tooth morphology charts and histology diagrams regularly.
  • Dental Materials has a consistent 14-question weightage. Focus on material properties, setting reactions, and clinical indications.
  • Pharmacology questions are mostly application-based — drug of choice for dental conditions, drug interactions, and doses in pediatric dentistry.

Manage Time Carefully

You get about 45 seconds per question. Regular practice with timed NEET MDS mock tests helps you build speed without losing accuracy.

  • Aim to complete Part A in 60–65 minutes, leaving 10 minutes for review.
  • In Part B, try to answer in 90–95 minutes, keeping 10 minutes for review.
  • Do not spend more than 60 seconds on any one question. Flag it and move on.

Be Smart About Negative Marking

The 4:1 marking ratio means guessing is risky. Here is a practical rule: only attempt a question if you can eliminate at least 2 of the 4 options.

  • If you can narrow it down to 2 options, your probability of getting it right is 50%. In that case, the expected value is positive and you should attempt it.
  • If you have no idea about a question, skip it. The 0-mark outcome beats a –1.
  • Keep track of your accuracy in mock tests. If it falls below 75%, cut down on guessing.
