NIFT 2027 B.Des Eligibility Criteria

The Bachelor of Design (B.Des) is a 4-year undergraduate program offered across 9 specialisations including Fashion Design, Textile Design, Accessory Design, Leather Design, Knitwear Design, and Fashion Communication. Here is what you need to qualify for B.Des admission in 2027.

Educational Qualification

You must have passed the 10+2 examination or an equivalent from a Central or State Board recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Students appearing in Class 12 in 2027 can apply provisionally; admission is confirmed only after you submit your passing certificate.

• There is no stream restriction — Science, Arts, and Commerce students are all eligible.
• Students who have passed Class 12 through open schooling or distance education from a recognised board are also eligible.
• There is no minimum aggregate percentage mandated for B.Des as per NIFT’s standard practice; confirm this in the official 2027 information brochure once released.

Age Limit for B.Des

General and EWS students must be 23 years or younger as of October 1, 2027. OBC-NCL students get a 3-year relaxation (maximum 26 years), and SC/ST/PwD students get a 5-year relaxation (maximum 28 years). If your birthday falls on or after October 2, 2027, you are still within the limit.

NIFT 2027 M.Des Eligibility Criteria

The Master of Design (M.Des) is a 2-year postgraduate program at NIFT. M.Des eligibility is broader in terms of academic background, welcoming graduates from any discipline.

Educational Qualification for M.Des

You need a bachelor’s degree of at least 3 years’ duration from a recognised university. Graduates from any discipline — arts, design, engineering, science, or commerce — can apply.

• Students in the final year of their graduation can apply provisionally.
• A B.Des or diploma in design (10+2+3 pattern minimum) from a recognised institute also qualifies as the prerequisite for M.Des.
• Final admission is confirmed only after you submit your degree certificate and it is verified by NIFT.

Age Limit for M.Des

General and EWS students must be within 30 years of age as of October 1, 2027. OBC-NCL students have a limit of 33 years, and SC/ST/PwD students can be up to 35 years old. Age is calculated on the same reference date as B.Des.

Attempt Limit for NIFT 2027

NIFT imposes no maximum number of attempts for B.Des or M.Des. Unlike some competitive exams that cap attempts irrespective of age, NIFT allows you to appear every year as long as you satisfy the age criterion for your category in that year.

In practice, the upper age limit is the binding constraint. Once you exceed the maximum age for your category, you cannot apply further regardless of how many times you have previously attempted the exam. Most students appear in NIFT one to three times before securing admission.
