Mandarin vs Chinese

  • Like every other language, Chinese too has multiple dialects. So, Mandarin is one of the 200 dialects spoken in the country.
  • This means that Mandarin is just another form of Chinese. Mandarin is the most commonly used dialect in the country and it has been recognized as the official language of Mainland China and Taiwan. Other dialects include Cantonese, Hunanese, etc.
  • A Mandarin dialect only has 4 tones whereas a Cantonese dialect comes with 6 tones. So, a Mandarin course will help navigate through all the four tones of the dialect.

How long does it take to learn Mandarin?

The time it takes to learn Mandarin entirely depends on the level the learner is trying to achieve. For example, if one diligently allots an hour every day to learn Mandarin, they can reach level 1 or level 2 in just 100 days. At the same time, if one is trying to achieve conversational fluency close to a native speaker, it can take around 4-5 years.

Mandarin for Beginners

To put it simply, Mandarin is not an easy language to learn. English somewhere or the other has similarities with multiple European languages but it is nowhere close to Mandarin. As a matter of fact, Mandarin or the Chinese language shares little to no similarities with other languages. While languages like Spanish and Italian take about 3-4 months to learn, Mandarin can take years to master. Luckily, there are multiple Mandarin courses available both online and offline to help you reach advanced levels.
