Ballistics is divided into four categories:
Internal Ballistics
Internal ballistics is often referred to as first ballistics or internal ballistics. Internal ballistics is concerned with what happens in the two milliseconds between the firing of the pin or striker and the egress of the bullet through the muzzle end of the barrel.
- It is the first phase, which includes an examination of projectile propulsion and flight.

External Ballistics
External ballistics studies the composition of the projectile and its behavior after the second phase has been completed. That is, whenever the bullet is poised to impact the target and exits the projectile, external ballistics is used to investigate the repercussions.

Kinetic Energy (KE) = 1/2 MV2
Where,
V = velocity in feet per second (fps) and
M = mass is given in pounds, derived from the weight (W) of the bullet in grains,
Let say,
Kinetic Energy (KE) = W(V)2 / (450,435) ft/lb
Even after the bullet's energy has left the muzzle, the ballistic coefficient (BC) determines how much KE is delivered to the target.

f(v/a)= is a coefficient associated with the ratio of the velocity of the bullet to the velocity of sound in the medium through which it travels.
k = constant for the shape of the bullet
p = density of the medium.
d = diameter of the bullet, and
v = the velocity.
Another definition of retardation is the amount a bullet is slowed by drag.

Because drag is difficult to quantify, the Ballistic Coefficient (BC) is frequently used:
BC = SD / I
SD = sectional density of the bullet,
I = form factor for the bullet shape.
Terminal Ballistics
It is the final stage of ballistics. It begins studying projectile behavior when it hits the target.
- It could be the same for both small-caliber and large-caliber projectiles.
- The wounded ballistics can be found in the terminal ballistics.
- When a projectile impacts a target, regardless of its velocity, the resulting result is worth studying and comprehending.
