• The story of the rocking horse winner revolves around Paul's accurate prediction about the winner of a horse race.
• The story begins with Paul’s mother Hester, who feels unlucky because her family is running out of money. She is facing trouble in looking after her three children. 
• Paul, the youngest son of Hester is worried about the family’s financial condition as he hears the house’s constant whisper, “There must be more money”.
• He asked his mother why they don’t have enough money, to which his mother explains to him that they are unlucky. Luck is the reason people are rich. 
• Paul claims that he is lucky, however, his mother doesn’t believe him, which made him determined to prove his luck to her.
• Paul had a strong belief in his rocking horse so he obsessively started riding it. 
• He kept his horse a secret from everyone. 
• He talks with Bassett, the family gardener, about horse racing and places bets on the races whenever he “knows” who will win.
• Paul’s Uncle Oscar finds out about Paul’s betting and he too started betting based on Paul’s accurate recommendations. 
• Suddenly Paul started making an extraordinarily large amount of money, which vanished his financial worry meanwhile he also became increasingly anxious and intense.
• Uncle Oscar helps Paul give some money to his mother anonymously. Hester was more focused on buying new furniture and invested in sending Paul to an elite school rather than paying off debts. 
• Paul is more determined than ever to make the whispering of the house stop so he refuses to stop riding his rocking horse. The Derby (a big horse race) is coming up, and Paul is obsessed with picking the winner.
• One fine night, Hester at a party is overwhelmed with anxiety about Paul. She calls the nurse to see how he’s doing but didn’t let the nurse bother Paul until she’s home. 
• As soon as Hester entered home, she heard a familiar yet violent noise coming from behind the door. Paul was riding his rocking horse so hard that he and the horse lit up in a strange light. He announces in a deep voice, “It’s Malabar” and then collapses to the floor.
• A few days later, Paul was very ill. Bassett the family gardener tells Paul that Malabar (a horse’s name) won the Derby, and Paul earned eighty thousand pounds. Paul was very excited to prove to his mother that he is lucky. 
• But unfortunately the same night, Paul dies. Uncle Oscar suggests that Hester is better off having eighty thousand pounds instead of a strange son. But that Paul is also better off dead than living in a state where he rides his rocking horse to find the winner.
